Saturday Evening

After a long day of attending the car show and exploring the area, we dressed for another excellent dinner at the Harvest Grill located on Shelton Vineyards’ grounds.   Behind me above…

Subtle Changes

I put out new ferns each spring and move all the orchids to the screened porch. That process started to change to lighten up my home decor for warm weather. This year,…

  1. Susan, I’ve been following you since Fifty Not Frumpy and love and appreciate all you and Mr Mickey share I’ve been battling some sort of autoimmune problem for years and am about to have MRI of brain. I desperately want to learn to Eat To Live as you have. I’m married but husband doesn’t comply with his own diabetic diet and our adult daughter and grand baby are living with us. I’m retiring early on 4/30 at age 55 because I can’t tolerate working any longer. I was diagnosed in 1999 Fibromyalgia and now possibly MS. I want to focus on my health at retirement to hopefully get stronger and able to return to part time work. I’m wondering if you would post more/ current how you “transformed”? You’re an inspiration especially because I don’t have very supportive people around. Thanks so much!

    1. Eat food as close to the way it grew in the ground as you possibly can. Do not ever eat fast food or packaged convenience foods or snacks. Avoid beef, pork, and all processed meats. Eat beans, greens, grains, seeds, nuts, vegetables, and fruit in small quantities. Drink only filtered water. Walk and move around as much as you can during the day. Go to bed at the same time and rise at about the same time each day. (This is my lifestyle in a nutshell.) I hope you have success in your pursuit of better health. Best to you, Susan

  2. Susan, Thank you for being the bright spot in my email in box! You always offer usable information and beautiful photos. I appreciate your disclosure and judicial use of advertising in your blog. You are successfully maintaining your “brand” by doing so. Its disappointing when a blog turns into just one more piece of advertisement.
I have a difficult shape (ie: short waisted, long legs and arms, and hips that are fuller immediately below the waist). So I need to camouflage the short torso and high hip issue when I dress myself. Never able to find an of the rack dress, never a belted waist. I dress in separates always. I’m 5′ 4″, 135 pounds and 68 yo. I would appreciate additional ideas for dressing my specific issues. Thank you Susan and Mr Mickey.

    1. I have the same short waist, high hip situation! I never fully tuck in a shirt. I also never show more than the bottom half of my behind. We might think the answer is to cover up with oversized or long clothes, but that always makes me look larger than I am. Now that I wear more low heeled shoes, I am still re-evaluating what I can and cannot wear.

  3. Susan, your website is great! I have shared it with friends and we all love it. I especially like when you show outfits and compare which is better, like the recent utility jacket. You are very informative, clear, and offer valuable tips for consideration – whether shopping or evaluating what to keep in my closet. Right now, I am debating about shrugs! What are your thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Lois

  4. Pushing 70 I dont wear old people clothes…looking for a style for the young at heart..always wore jeans an d tee shirts…help me

    1. I also wear jeans and a tee often. I pair the look with slingbacks or nude loafers and carry a structured bag. The accessories can elevate basics and make them appropriate for most occasions. The fit is essential. Look for jeans that fit without being too tight and tees with feminine details like a V-neckline. Stay away from faded or torn jeans and tees with logos or designs.

  5. I have been pinning your outfits for inspiration. You always look classy & well
dressed. Thank you so much for showing
    such style.

  6. I have two questions. Can you suggest organic body was for very sensitive skin? How do you find restaurants that have such healthy, clean eating?

  7. Hi Sonia Rosario here, saw your pins on pinterest and I like what I see. You do a great job putting fashion things together and I’m looking forward to seeing more. At 55 I have a pretty good idea about fashion but I always appreciate more help and for that I say thank you.
    Keep up the good work!

  8. How tall are you Susan? I am only 5 feet 3 inches and I wonder if your clothes would look good for me.

    Thank you

  9. The series on tank dresses was great and so helpful for styling the dress to perfection. Thanks to you two for the big effort. Kate

  10. The front slit ankle white pants by shopmyfairlady say to dry clean them. Have you tried to machine wash them?

  11. Hello Susan,

Is there a shampoo that you like for grey hair? My hair is pretty much all white except the very low hair which is a bit darker. I bleached it the lightest color so I could see how much grey I have. I will just cut all my hair off in a few months. I am used to a very short pixie in the past so that will work the best for me. Any other ideas??

    Thank you,

    Warmly,
    Joan Stone

    1. Hi Joan,
I use a purple shampoo for blonde hair (Cool Blonde Shampoo Color Solutions by Ion) and mix it with my Beautycounter shampoo a couple of times a week. It tends to dry out my hair, so I don’t use it more often but, it does cut the yellowing.
My face shape requires more length, but I would love to have a pixie cut. So easy!

  12. I love seeing you show brown colors. And warm accessories. I have similar brown core pieces or I would have added yours. Thanks for all the tips! I live in cold Michigan so am gearing up with down vests, etc.

  13. I’ve just turned 60. Your blog has given me so much hope, I have always cared about my appearance, but not ready to look like an old lady. You have shown me I can still be classy & attractive at this age. Just ordered my first pair of pants from your shop, can’t wait to get them! Keep inspiring all us women who still want to be beautiful! WISH Pinterest would only do your current post.

  14. Love your blog. Love your sense of style! You truly inspire me to dress my best! I look forward to finding your posts in my inbox ! (And) I can usually find pieces similar to what you wear already in my closet! #FreshIdeas

You take ‘Ho hum style’ to ‘Wowza! We certainly do not need to sacrific style as we mature a bit! #BetterThanEver

  15. Thank you for your doable/wearable fashion ideas to use pieces we probably have in our wardrobe and what to look for in pieces we add that will get used in more ways than one.

  16. Several months ago you posted a recipe for your go-to lunch of rice & beans. I finally found some black rice that I would like to try. Now of course I can’t find the recipe. Can you help?

  17. What would you wear to a barn wedding? I am 67, normal weight, 5’ 6”. I am stumped. Love the way you dress.

Thank you for whatever insight you can give me. Vickie

    1. I would wear something that makes me feel confident with comfortable wedge heeled shoes so that they don’t sink into the dirt. What time of day and what time of year is the wedding? Those answers will determine the type of clothing that will be appropriate.

  18. I like your style which is actually very similar to mine. We even have a similar hairstyle but at nearly 65 I am yet to give up being a blonde. I am not sure how tall you are but slim pants with looser shirts and tops are very flattering and disguise the thicker middle which most of us seem to end up with. I also have a biggish bust and find I need to up size to prevent the gape which is annoying. I have recently lost some weight ( about 8kg ) and this winter I have just about lived in a short bikey style fake leather tan jacket worn with slim pants and boots. I do find I end up with a favourite outfit and just about wear it to death even tboygh I have a reasonable sized wardrobe which is regularly culled. I normally wouldn’t have worn a short jacket but this one is quite flattering. I live in New Zealand so our seasons are apposing and I can’t purchase the same clothes but can certainly follow your style and suggestions. The only thing I am not keen on are the bootie style of shoe that you like. I mostly wear flats including boots. I am lucky to have slim ankles and calves and suit a variety of shoe styles but find heels are no longer comfortable if I wear them for any length of time.
    Regards
    Linda

  19. Your travels again are such fun and fantasy foods really great. Yet to read and looking forward to All About Coats!

  20. Dear Susan, you are georgeous! Best wishes and lovely greetings from nortern Germany. B (over 70…) Never bern where you are in all my life. Very sad.

  21. Hi Susan…my daughter is an employee at Chico’s. .She had an event and asked me to model. .Susan, I had a great time. I too brought alone my own footwear and wow..perfect for the two outfits she picked for me..The Leopard print SKIRT SOLD..I even assisted shoppers and contributed to four sales…I was invited to participate again..Susan, I think I will..Talking to the clients were so much fun..I too LOVE clothes..I would love to send u a picture of the clothing I modeled. .

  22. Susan, you are one of the fashion bloggers I consistently follow because you’re a tad over 60, like me, and don’t subscribe to every trendy fashion whim that comes gusting along. Your taste is similar to mine, and I often receive compliments on the way I dress because, like you, it’s age appropriate, stylish, a nod to a passing trend, if appropriate, & thoughtfully accessorized.
I loved the vlog you did with Ellie! I wish you would consider doing more along those lines. Makeovers for “real” everyday women we see in ordinary life. Perhaps pulling existing items from their closet, showing ways they can be accessorized, worn in a new, fresh way, or even adding new pieces, which you could detail in links below, i,e., black pants from Nordstrom, jacket from Talbots, etc. So your readers could shop along! I’d also love a vlog, accenting different body types & what looks good on them, using real, everyday women 60 & over & making your wonderful suggestions.

  23. Just wanted to say thank you, Susan. I have followed several of your tips. It’s so nice to have someone helping us “over 60” gals. It’s difficult to be over 60 and not be frumpy–especially when today’s fashion caters to youth.

  24. Susan, thank you for sharing the pictures of you in the Navy, and for serving our Country. Just as beautiful today as you were then. Thank you for your suggestions – I have the crepe pants and tops in every color. Just sorry I can’t wear them in the winter in the Philadelphia area. I travel for work and they look great with jackets, scarves and ballet flats. I would like more ideas from you for clothes to wear to work in the winter in the Northeast.

  25. Susan, I normally do not write to blogs, but I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your articles and look forward to them each week. I am 10 years your senior but find the ideas you bring forth can be applied to myself. I had been looking for some time to find ideas on how to keep my appearance up to date. Most of the articles in magazines were not appropriate to my age level and I do like a ‘classic’ look with quality that can last for several years.

Even though you are retiring from your business, I hope you will continue the blogs. I have enjoyed them and they are most helpful. I too have had to give up high heels, much to my sadness, and have been interested in seeing how you are dealing with the issue. As I age I have noticed that my figure is becoming more of a rectangle and my narrow waist is long gone. If you are ever able to deal with this issue it would be greatly appreciated. I have noticed among my friends that I am not alone in this issue.

    Thank you again
    Lydia

    1. Thank you for your comment, Lydia. My waist was never very narrow, but it certainly isn’t now. That is one of the reasons I wear layers and scarves. More tips to follow.

  26. Hi Susan,

Will you be coming out to NorCal soon? I can host you and Mr. Mickey at our beach house.

Very different weather, but Monterey might be similar in style.

  27. You have been such an inspiration over the last few years! I retired this year to sunny California from NY. Talk about wardrobe weeding! I refer back to your past posts to motivate and help me during the process. It will take me a year for sure as I experience the weather and lifestyle changes but using your advice I go to my closet before I head out to purchase anything new for an event. Thank you!

  28. Hi Susan, The closet tour is one of my favorites. I have been following your blog for a few years now, and I always enjoy your helpful thoughts and photos. While your colors and mine are totally different, I have learned to substitute and use what works best for me. Im 75 and love just being basic with a touch of pizzaz now and then. Im a traditional gal. I cant wait to start on my closet this morning, and use your great tips! We are never too old to enjoy and change our fashion.

  29. Could you please address the issue of pant length some time? I am 5 feet tall and bootcut styling is my favorite (because the line is continuous if shoes match) but I feel the look is dated. Searching through your posts, I find that you note ankle length pants are cooler in summer. Would you recommend ankle length in winter? Like you, only very small heels, for very infrequent and limited use, work. I almost always wear flats. My needs are primarily casual, With retirement, I seldom dress up. Thanks.

  30. Thank you for the post today. It was perfect as I have another event Tuesday night. It is seldom cold here but thanks to AC I can wear jackets or sweaters at night. Diane

  31. Wow I’ve just found your website through Pinterest. I am so pleased to see someone showing fashion for the older lady. My sister and I are both in our 50’s I’m am in my late 50’s and we find it so hard to look fashionable without looking like we are trying to be 20/30 years old, neither of us are model height or size and it is refreshing to see what you are doing, you are an inspiration and look so glamorous yet real.

  32. I in no way claim to be a *fashionista*, but am interested in improving the way I can put some basic, favorite pieces together in interesting ways.
A friend shared your blog site with me and I truly enjoyed it ~ enough that I am subscribing. Susan, you are a beautiful woman and from your video and speaking, I sense a very sincere, delightful personality with a serious understanding and joy of all you have done & are doing.
    Thank You.
    L.S.

  33. Hi Susan,
I so enjoy sharing in your creativity. You’re style is classy, sassy, tasteful and appropriate. You are teaching many of us how to appreciate ourselves and this wonderful era of our lives. I, as well, am blest with a ‘Mr. Mickey’ in my life–and you are right–the next 50 are the best ever if we honor, enjoy and appreciate every moment we have.
Thank you for sharing your fun and uplifting life.
    Best,
    Sue

  34. Susan, I have heavy calves and have trouble finding pants and/or jeans that don’t cling and accentuate my lower legs. Do you have any suggestions for me?
I so enjoy receiving your e mails and your comments on facebook.
It seems that all of the clothing companies are only making skinned jeans, jogging S and leggings now.
    Lelah Castell

    1. My calves are almost thicker than my thighs, so I know what you mean. I look for a slight boot cut or straight leg jeans. My favorite companies are Liverpool Jeans Co. and Chico’s. J.Jill has great jeans too.

  35. I am interested in purchasing the under garments that you have spoken about on your website. How can I do that? I would need to know how to measure, prices, etc. Thanks.

  36. I love the black straight leg crepe pants for work. I am wondering if you can suggest or carry more colors for Spring.

Than you for your anticipated response.

    Leigh

  37. Hi Susan, I just got done “binge watching” all your years of Fifty not Frumpy and Susan After 60 and I thoroughly enjoyed it! What an amazing life you’ve had and continue to have. I enjoyed your and Mr. Mickey’s travels the most, I think you should have a travel blog instead of fashion. The photos and descriptions of your visits have made me want to explore the areas so I’m taking notes! I know you’ve said you don’t wear heels much any more but I had a nagging question going through Fifty not Frumpy, how in the world did you keep your heels from getting ruined walking on all those sidewalks, cobblestones and dirt paths? I have a hard time not nicking up heels just wearing them for an evening!

    1. Thank you for your kind comment. I have always been extra careful with my bags and shoes. I watch where I am walking and polish all of my leather items a couple of times a year.

  38. Hi Susan, I recently had knee replacement surgery and stumbled onto your YouTube page. I have enjoyed your videos, and was wondering if your suggested styles work for all sizes? I currently wear a 16 and most of the straight legged jeans that look wonderful on you would be way to tight on my calf… Now with the surgery my wardrobe is a bit more limited to yoga pants and tees. Any suggestions for us bigger gals. I’m 52 and am just starting to build a nicer wardrobe.
    Thanks, Debra from Canada

    1. My concept of incorporating basic pieces in neutral colors would work for anyone of any size or age. I encourage people to learn what suits your shape and lifestyle to know which shape those basics should be. If you own a basic top, bottom and a third piece (jacket, cardigan, vest or duster) you can not only create outfits using just those pieces, you can substitute any of the items you already own to create outfits that are flattering to you in minutes.

  39. Hi, Susan,
    Loving your springtime fashion ideas.

Just wanted to mention… for the second time, I am having difficulty ordering from Everlane. I have filled in all necessary information but cannot get to where I place the order.

Thought you might mention this to them as others may not be so diligent as I.

    Happy blogging♥️

  40. I enjoy reading your email and utube videos. I am thrilled to finally find a site where the fashion advise is geared for older women. Your style advice is great. We can look chic and stylish plus building a wardrobe advice is fantastic. Thanks.

  41. Susan, If I remember correctly, you had done s video on what shoes to wear with different types of pants. I wanted to watch it again but now I cannot find it. Can you tell me where to find it or send me the link please? Thanks.

    1. I haven’t done a video yet, but I have mentioned it on numerous blog posts. I always try to keep the hemline at the most narrow part of my ankle when I am wearing straight leg or skinny pants. (A couple of inches above the ankle bone usually.) Flare leg crop pants should also end at the most narrow part of the leg. Longer flare leg pants should almost cover your shoes. The hemline of your pants should never bunch or puddle on the top of your shoes. It is more current to show the ankle bones, rather than wear your pants to the top of the foot as we did when we were younger.

  42. Hello Susan,

Thank you for the different styles of the swimsuits for the shapes of your body. I can shop for my shape body.

I am into eating healthy. What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?

  43. I will be attending a spring fashion show in May. It will be held at a country club here in So Cal. My core wardrobe is similar to yours (minus any dresses and skirts) but the black and navy seem so dark for this event. I am curious what you would wear, using your existing clothes, and appreciate any suggestions if you have time. Thank you.

  44. I am sorry you have to close your shopping site. Even though I have only purchase 1 silk scarf and am about to buy another, I have so enjoyed seeing what you offer. Am I dreaming, or was there a video you made about how to wear your large 51″ scarves? If so, can you please direct me there.

    Thank you!

  45. Hi Ms. Susan can you please advise this old lady where to buy scarf, that’s not hundreds of dollars:) that’s just not possible for me not even in the wildest dreams. Thank you so much I’ enjoining EVERY video, story, pictures, I send you messages but because I’m technically challenged (nicely said) I have no idea where I send it to. First I saw when you start making jewelry with coin from Czech Republic and that got my attention because I’m from Prague. Thank you for sharing all your tips.

  46. Do you cruise on a major line? If you do, I would appreciate some hints for a 2 week cruise starting in San Diego and sailing to the Hawaiian Islands and back to San Diego in December.

  47. Hi Susan!
I have recent discovered you, and have really been enjoying learning form your articles!
I am a few years older than you, but I still want to dress well, being age appropriate.
Thank you for sharing your amazing life,so others may strive to overcome obstacles and move on too!

  48. I need to vent some place. Why, oh why, did Express start putting pockets on their Portofino shirts? They’re a pain in the neck. I have to put a little Velcro on each pocket, or the pocket droops and causes a pucker. I’ve let Express know, but you have much more pull than I. Maybe we should all tell them. Their shirts were perfect, except now they’re not.

  49. Susan,
I just found your videos on YouTube and love them. Do you have a video on a wardrobe capsule for a professional work environment? Love the small heels and sophisticated look. Very classy. I’m trying to build this style of wardrobe and need help. Appreciate you and look forward to watching many more videos.
    Kim

  50. I like reading all of your blogs. I really like your style and seem to be quite similar in taste. Best of all I LOVE YOUR SHOES But I’m 66 now and have had surgery on both my feet. I can not wear heels any longer. I need advice on looking good in comfortable flats

  51. Susan, you have changed my life! Thank you for all your tried and true advice! I love your scarves and want to buy some.
    Thank you, sincerely!
    Rose Blake

  52. I just lost a bunch of weight. I am working on a capsule wardrobe and your u tube videos are very helpful. I just stumbled upon your u tube channel and subscribed. I am a 65 yr old foster mom to a severe needs kiddo. I still want to look nice when out and not a frump. Due to foot problems I can’t wear heels. Also when caring for my child not practical. Is there anyway to dress up an outfit without heels. I have wide feet as well as bunions . I want more of a minimal wardrobe with mix and match, dress up or down. My foot issues have always been an embarrassment. Is there hope ? I have very pretty silver/ white hair.

    1. Bring the emphasis to your hair and your face. Wear shoes that are comfortable and supportive in the tone that is close to the color of your pants in winter and your legs in summer when you might be wearing crops or skirts, and dresses.

  53. I am going to be eighty next month have not seen too many ideas for 80-year old I need some jeans but not sure which one I should go far can you help or give me a website for us older women not wanting to dress old.
    Need some new ideas.
    Thanks
    Macy Faciane

  54. I cannot find where to get the scarves, please help more.

  55. Susan,
I saw what you carry in your large purse but what about your clutches? How do you change from each purse so easily?
    Thank you,
    Marcella

  56. Love your site.

Is there a discount for the silver link bracelet you wear? Maybe Beauty in Stone?

  57. Ms Susan can I purchase any of the clothing you wear ? I just love everything , this has truly given me a larger spectrum to look at .. My closet is full of things I can’t/don’t want to wear. I’m 5’7″ 145lbs grey hair and 70yoa . I need help !! I would appreciate any guidance you can spare ! Thanks in advance, Linda Stephens

    1. Hi Linda, If you click on the blue words in my posts, you will be directed to the retailers that offer the same or similar items to what I am wearing in that post. I often wear things that are a few years old, so in those cases, I look for the items that are most similar to share with you.

  58. I found your blog today by accident and hope that it will be the inspiration I need to get my act together and do what I’ve needed to do for a few years now. Retired for 18 months, I’m still carrying around 70 extra pounds that are dragging me down, both mentally and physically. I’ve always loved nice clothes and getting dressed for work each day. Getting up with nowhere to go has led to days of no makeup and wearing some of the most depressing clothes you’ve ever seen.
What do you wear every day? Do you put on your “full face”? Some days there doesn’t seem to be much point. I have more clothes than you can imagine from size 14 to 20 despite having cleared out a lot during our downsizing move in 2016. The one thing I am happy about is my hair after finding a new stylist a little over a year ago, but the rest of me is a disaster!
I am so excited to find this site and hope that I can use your advice to help me maintain my commitment to both dieting and identifying a core wardrobe that is appropriate for retirement which includes both travel and being at home here at the lake.

    1. Welcome, Margo! I hope you enjoy what I share. My retirement wardrobe will include mostly classic basics that I can layer, interchange, and accessorize to achieve the look I want, without having to own a vast selection.

  59. Susan,
I’m delighted I happened upon your blog site a couple weeks ago. I’ve gone back to your previous posts and am currently working my way through 2015. It’s been fun to see the areas around where you live — Asheville, etc. Such lovely countryside and special towns.

I especially appreciated a posting of your summer core wardrobe in 2015. I dress similarly to you; primarily pants, solids on the top, with a cardigan. I basically wear black, cobalt blue, reds, grey. Since I quit coloring my hair (it’s close to yours in shade) I can’t wear orange, green, yellows. Much easier to stick with cool shades which look best on me and easy to coordinate together.

Anyway, wondering if you have done an update summer core wardrobe plus winter for cooler temp weather. So very helpful.

Many thanks for your involvement and suggestions for keeping us 60+ ladies looking as spiffy as possible.

    Regards,
    Ann Spencer

    1. The same concept applies across seasons. The fabrics may be thicker, and a cashmere sweater may take the place of those Portofino Shirts I wear in warm weather.

  60. Hi Susan,

Thank you for all your wonderful fashion ideas. I have been getting your daily email and look forward each day to receiving them. Although I cannot afford the clothes you wear, the way you put them together gives me ideas and makes me feel more confident in the way I dress.

I am looking for a suggestion on what to wear for an October wedding. I do not wear skirts or dresses, and have not worn heels for quite a few years. I am going to be 70 next month, have let my hair go to it’s now natural color, (gray) am 5 foot 5, weight is approximately 125.. I would love to have your suggestions for this occasion. I have trouble putting things together and that is why I look forward to your daily emails, and tips. I live in Wisconsin and the weather can be quite unpredictable in October.

I look forward to hearing from you, Susan

    Sandy

  61. Hello Susan after 60 from Colette in Wigan U.K
I just wanted to say that I love your style and I have started following you on Pinterest but have now found your website.
I have just turned 59 a few weeks ago and think your ideas on dressing are great. Just been promoted at work to receptionist and am looking for style tips.
I especially like your Stylista bra/camisole and will be purchasing one on Amazon shortly.
So although I have a year to go before I hit the big 60 I will be pinching a few of your ideas! Thanks for the inspiration! Xx

  62. Hi Susan,
I enjoy reading your posts on Susanafter60. You are teaching me so much about how to dress now that I am over 60. Do you still have scarves for sale. Please let me know.
    Thank You ,
    Judith

  63. Hi Susan,
I just want to say how much I enjoy your blog and your style!! I have been changing up look to be more sophisticated, using good solid colored clothing and mixing them with accessories such as bold jewelry and scarves. I have just added scarves lately so I have not bought any of yours. I am short and carry my weight in my upper body (read boobs) so I feel overwhelmed by too much scarf, but I have found some that are narrow and not as bulky and they can really class up an outfit as you have shown me! Over the years you have introduced me to soma, Clara Sun Woo and others. I have my eye on that leather jacket. Awesome and not too full of extra “stuff”!

  64. Hi Susan. I have been following your posts for a few weeks and I love your tips, outfits, and ideas. I have a difficult time with style because I am short 5’3″ my body type is somewhat similar to yours as I am narrow in the hips and wider torso. Thank you for being so true to your best self. It inspires me. I’m trying some of your tips and I’m loving the results so far.

  65. Do you have any suggestions for loungewear that doesn’t look like a robe and sleepwear? I want something comfy to wear while reading but appropriate to wear out the door when I let the dog out in NW Florida.

  66. Is Susan the woman in the Navy uniform? If so, when were you in the Navy and where were you stationed? I was an Electronics Technician myself.

    1. If you are building a wardrobe from the beginning, think first of color. Which colors do you look best in and enjoy wearing most? Do they go with each other? One neutral, one light color, and one dark color of each item will allow you to create endless looks. Start with a simple top with a flattering neckline, next look for a great pair of jeans that fits your shape, then buy a jacket that is basic enough to wear every day. You are on your way! Accessories are the key to making a few good pieces work for you in every situation.

  67. Hi Susan,
I have been following your posts for awhile and enjoy your tips on fashion. Not too long ago you mentioned shapeeze and I believe a discount code which I can’t seem to find. If you could send it to me , I believe it is expiring soon,I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

  68. Hi Susan,
I don’t remember how I found your site, I’m just glad I did. It is so fun and the information is fantastic.

Thank you for all the inspiring tips that “after 60” can still be stylish.

Please keep all the emails coming!

    Sincerely, LW

  69. I love the Native | White Dial – Silver. You look so stylish wearing it and also I think your hair behind the ears makes you look even prettier!

  70. I have been following you online for about 6 months and have found such inspiration! Like you I am retired and in my 60’s. I needed to purge the office outfits and go casual. Like you I avoid dresses and skirts save a select few for formal occasions. I now see how to “shop” my closet. I have become far more selective in choosing new items. Dressing is suddenly simple and yet elegant. My closet organized (and minimized) Packing for travel is simplified. Wahoo! I live in a small city in Canada. 51” scarves are hard to come by. I would treasure one should I be so lucky to add such a luxury to my closet. Keep up the positive and constructive online presence and have a very Merry Christmas.

  71. Just wanted to say Susan again thank you for your wonderful blogs. I so look forward to what interesting and very useful tips, ideas, suggestions your put forth. I have a small dilemma though; I bought a decorated sweater from WHBM – an oatmeal color, rather boxy, comfy basic shape, but it has a fabulous sparkly smattering of added bling across the right shoulder. I’m having a difficult time dressing it down; I tried it on with ankle jeans denim color & it looks good but they showed it with little silver heels & that’s just not me! Any ideas as to what footwear? No little kitten heels round my world right now with snow rain & ice! Boots? I have a pair similar to your Mark Fishers in gray, but I don’t know, its not quite right. Just wanted to wear it casually but I’m not sure I can… it might not be the “great deal” I though I had even at 50% off! Hahaha, live and learn. Here’s to a healthy, peaceful and productive 2020! All the best to you & Mr. Mickey!

  72. Hi Susan,
I really like your style. I’m of similar age and still professionally active meeting customers so always wanting to look my best.
I can easily gather those tops, jackets, accessories that work for my body type but am struggling with dress pants. I am 64 and 5’4″, over 250 with a square torso build.
The dress pants I have to look good when I wear kitten heels but now that I feel more comfortable wearing dress flats those same dress pants make me look squatty.
Noticing that I probably need to adjust to a slimmer leg, ankle dress pant with dress flats I would like to obtain your input on where the best place is to begin this
search for slim leg dress pants that would be flattering on me. I’m not concerned with the cost at all, just want to buy what looks the best on me for my body type.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Nancy Kane

    1. A slimmer cut to the leg looks best when the hemline ends just above the anklebone. Showing the most slender part of the ankle when wearing pointed or almond toe flats or low heels is feminine and professional. When you wear a blazer this combination looks especially lovely.

  73. Hi
I was following Susan after 60 but I unsubscribed for some reason. I am now trying to receive emails again but no matter how many times I put my email address in I don’t get the blog in my email. Any help would be appreciated

    Linda

  74. In one of your posts, there was a photo of you wearing a large scarf tied like a bolero or little jacket. Do you have instructions for that somewhere? Thanks!

    1. Tie the corners together. (Let top corner to left bottom corner and the same on the right side.) Slip the scarf over your shoulders and move the knots toward the back. I wore a fifty-one-inch scarf as a shrug here. These tips also work with smaller scarves.

  75. Just a quick question. What size of dress from soft surroundings did you buy. I am about your size but live in Canada and don’t want to order the wrong size.
    Rose

  76. Dear Susan. Your fashion sense is totally awesome! YOU ROCK the outfits you wear! Thank you so much for sharing tips, etc. You are beautiful and it shows! I love the way you put clothes together! I’m learning a lot from your blog.

I am only 4ft 11in which is really tough to dress to make me look taller! I try. I am petite with an athletic build. I’m 70 and still working out religiously at the gym! I walk my dog everything day. I’m fit but could lose 10 pounds if only I would eat as I should.

You are an inspiration to many! Please continue to blog.

  77. Where do you go to shop your website. I have enjoyed your YouTube videos, and am interested in some of your products.

    1. Thank you for your interest, Debra. I had to close my shopping site early last year when I lost my primary clothing supplier. I now share all the links for the best products I can find.

  78. Susan, I would like to order the socks shown in your picture. On the site there are ultra low, low, medium or high cut dressy no show. Which one are you wearing.

  79. I love your channel. I just subscribed.
Stay tuned for my upcoming channel. I’ve been trying to upload my first video but have been unable to edit… my new channel is called Minimum Age. It’s about being younger. I’m 65. I hope you tune in.
By the way, loved your outfits in the video where you changed coats and shoes! I have one… I got everything at Goodwill! I hope you like it…
    Anita Hultin

  80. Thank you so much for the suggestion of the travel packs, they kept everything so neat and tidy and organized, love them. Have a wonderful weekend….Beautiful today in Idaho!!

  81. Susan I will be turning 70 in August. My husband and I are going on a cruise. What do you suggest for dress up night?

  82. Susan, I always look forward to reading your fashion tips! I have a pandemic question for you: can you recommend a stylish face mask to wear?
Something that has a filter in it, for extra safety? There are so many choices online that I am getting confused. I would love to see what face mask
you would select to wear with your stylish clothes.

  83. Susan
Enjoy your posts, curious if you live in a Patio home also are you actively employed other than your than your blog?

    1. I do live in a Patio home, and I love the fact that there is so much less to maintain. I downsized from a five-bedroom three-story house about six years ago, and I sold my company (Vintage Jewelry Supplies Inc.) last year. The blog is my full-time job.

  84. Good Morning…….Michael in Virginia…..Just wanted to say what a lovely woman you are…..Very stylish and attractive…Hope your day goes well and take care during this time…….Michael

  85. Hello Susan. I am a long time subscriber of yours. I received an email today purporting to be from you that I thought I should tell you about. I am sending it to you via these comments as I don’t know how else to contact you. The post is called Styling Elements. The email it is coming from is not your usual susanafter60.com. It is coming from vilinkdesign@gmail.com. This seems unusual to me. Can you please tell me, is this really you? My husband thinks your email list may have been hijacked. Or possibly something can be wrong on my end. Either way, I did not click on anything in the email. I wanted to let you know in case this isn’t really you and maybe others have received this email also. Thanks, Teresa Schultz

    1. I apologize for the confusion. We were having some issues with people not receiving the newsletter, so my web designer used that email address to try to pinpoint the issue. Problem solved! Thank you for your patience.

  86. For weeks I have not received your posts on Facebook despite my efforts to correct this. All of a sudden this am there you were.
So happy to have you back.

  87. I am presently going through a divorce and can relate to your past…at 64 and starting over is a little difficult! Oh heck, who am I kidding???? It’s downright scary! I know I’m strong in my faith in Jesus Christ but it’s good seeing a positive person who looks and seems great in her accomplishments! Thank you for sharing your past and present!

  88. I will be 50 in January. We tried everything for many years to no avail. However, at forty-six I gave birth to our peanut, after a spontaneous pregnancy surprise. Thank you for your ‘Being Cautious’ article. I also have Cerebral palsy and use crutches and sometimes a wheelchair.

  89. Love to check out what your wearing. Could you please tell me where you bought your red driving moccasins? I’ve seen several but love yours the best. Thank You

  90. You’ve got it all.Beautiful inside out.Everything is easier when you’re beautiful

  91. I’m very sorry to hear you have contracted Covid 19 and I wish very much for your speedy recovery and thoughts too of your Mr Mickey.

A follower of your blog from British Columbia, Canada,
My best wishes for your return to good health, from Sarah

  92. So glad to see you’re back and on your way to health……healthy living makes a difference. Prayers your way.

  93. You are just stunning! I am 62 and raising 4 granddaughters, so much of my time and money go into them as they are 9-18. I so wish to learn how to put myself first occasionally without guilt. I have been a widow since 2010. Friendship and advice is welcome.

  94. Hi Susan
Have been loving your blog. Purchased the Nordgreen watch and pearl lariat. Can’t wait to get them! Wish the stone and silver medallion necklace was less expensive. Well if we get another stimulus check I will splurge! Thanks again
    Christine

  95. Hi Susan!
I am Karen, age 63. I have a lot of trouble with what I call saggy skin. I have always had deep creases and now they sag around my mouth. I’m interested in your makeup skin care products. I don’t wear foundation because it just makes it look worse.
Thanks for any help or advice.
    Karen

  96. Love your outfit combinations! It really reminds me of ll the combination I have in my closet!!! Thanks for sharing your inspiration in these dramatically times your site is helping us relax!

  97. you are so blessed to have the height, the weight and the looks. iam barely 4’11 and 108 pounds, unlike you just a simple woman. God bless !

  98. I will miss you on Facebook, though I totally understand. Looking forward to seeing you on your website and Instagram. You are such an inspiration to me. Thank you for all the time and effort you devote to giving us wonderful tips and photos on fashion, beautiy, food, travel, hair. At 77 I’m well over 60, and so appreciative to see stylish, comfortable, easy to manage clothes (“normal” not freaky fads) and accessories that allow me to look and feel elegant and not frumpy, to look my best even if only staying at home or going for groceries.

  99. I’m sorry you have left Facebook, I totally understand. There is too much hate and lack of respect for others. I do enjoy your blogs. Stay well.

  100. I am so glad I found you !
At age 64, you have inspired me to donate clothing that does not flatter my 5’7” 148 lb. frame. I have become frumpy and grumpy while I recuperate from failed back surgeries the past several months. I have now adopted a realistic food plan to return to a healthy weight and stay hopeful.
    Couldn’t believe I had 12 pairs of unflattering black yoga pants – I gave 6 away …
    So appreciative of your Inspiration

  101. Dear Susan,

I really like your style tips and valuable advise on dressing. Although I agree that a third completer piece maeks an outfit, it is hard for me to put this into practice because I live in the Dominican Republic and we have an eternal Summer here. Would it be possible for you to share some styling tips that do not include a third piece? My sister in Miami would also appreciate it, as it is always hot there also.

    Thanks so much.

    Lourdes Cabrera

  102. Love your advice, keep it up! I feel I’m a better shopper after following you. So glad you are well again after the virus! Thanks for sharing your life experiences!

  103. Susan, I read your blog daily. I have learned a lot and am trying to raise the bar for my own wardrobe using your suggestions. My question to you is this: How do you keep your cloths? What do you hang on hangers, any particular type? What do you put in drawers etc?

Thanks for all the wonderful information.

    1. I have plentiful hanging space, so I hang all of my clothing. At the start of summer, I handwash all of my sweaters and fold them for storage in a drawer with cedar planks. When I do hang sweaters for regular use, I turn them inside out so that the shoulder pucker will be on the underside as I wear them. I don’t wear heavy, bulky sweaters, so the lightweight cashmere and merino wool sweaters are not damaged from hanging on felted or velvet hangers during the season. I will do a new blog post about this soon, but here is the last one I did.

  104. Susan, I commend your decision and commitment to a healthier, happier lifestyle. I need your guidance on how to do the same for myself. Recently, I ordered Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s book Eat to Live, and his approach to eating makes sense to me. I am 69 and will turn 70 next June. I do not want to enter my 71 st year obese, tired, and addicted to junk. Did you accomplish your eating change on your own or under direction from a physician or nutritionist? I need the support of someone to lose the amount of weight I need to lose. Thank you for sharing your life with others!
PS. I went to Milligan College near Johnson City.

    1. Make small changes every day. Don’t buy any food other than unprocessed plants. Drink lots more water. Move more every day, even if it is just walking around in your apartment. Follow a regular sleep schedule. Understand that it takes about three to four weeks to break bad habits. You can do this! Slow and steady changes every day can bring the changes you want. I did not have guidance or support from a professional, but my doctor did know about the changes I was making to my diet. She was thrilled with my results after six months. Ten years later, she still tells me I am her inspiration each time I see her.
Milligan is now a University. I enjoy visiting that campus so much.

  105. Hello Susan,

I have been following your blog on Pinterest for several months and really enjoy your posts on fashion and travel especially. Your blog first came to my attention when I was searching for hints on how to wear scarves. I had never really worn them, and always felt “swallowed” up by them, but when my mother passed away, she left many beautiful scarves in her wardrobe. I kept several and wanted to wear them as a remembrance of her, so I really appreciate your very helpful hints. As I delved further into your blog, I really admired your style and the way you dressed, but I said to myself, “Oh, she’s 6 feet tall with legs a mile long! I could never pull off that look!” It turns out, I, at 60 years old, am 5’6″, about 145 lbs and an inverted triangle body type – broad shoulders, busty, straight through the torso. It really opened my eyes and I was able to look at and wear the clothes in my wardrobe in new ways. I actually found that I had the basics already and didn’t need to buy a lot of new things, just wear them in a different way!

    1. Hi Cara. I eat smaller amounts of food as I age. My diet is mostly plant-based, and I rarely eat more than twice a day. I don’t sit still for very long and drink lots of water.

  106. Recently found you on you Tube and really enjoy your videos. I too like classic styles. Love the way you pair and
Put together outfits. Looking forward to more.

  107. Hi I was going through some of your older blogs and I noticed a lovely pearl necklace with leather. Could it be possible for you to give me the name or website of that necklace. Enjoy your blogs thank you very much Mimi O’Dell

  108. Susan, could you tell me where you get white denim jeans with no zipper? I sure I have pinned a post about that, but cannot find it.

    Thank you,
    Doris

  109. Dear Susan,
    Thank you!
I have enjoyed your videos and posts. I have not read nor viewed all of them, (but I plan too) and I have been amazed by your “transformation” and have loved reading about your journey.
I am now in my 60,s, though as I type it I don’t quite believe it. Lots of change and I am trying to embrace and enjoy and bloom where I have now been planted! You are an inspiration and I love all the pictures of you and your Husby in the day to day and in your travels.
    I love your fashion flair.
I have a fashion flair question…It is probably somewhere in your blog but I can’t find it (not hugely surprising).

Question: Brand of or link to the double layered camisoles you talked about in your 2020 favorites post.

Thank you for your quick response.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL POSTS, BLOG, YOUTUBE VIDEOS ETC.
    I love ❤️ them!
    Sincerely,
    Deby Malan

  110. I need your help. Late summer l hope to attend my 50th high school reunion. It’s a weekend affair with dinner at a country club on Saturday evening.. I’m sure some will meet and have informal get togethers on Friday and Sunday.

I am at a loss on what to wear. I want to show off my recent weight loss so I will need to purchase new clothing. Do you have any suggestions for me?

I am 5’ 2” and currently weigh 130 (I plan to be 120 within a couple of months.

    1. I would wear clothing that makes me feel confident, comfortable, and stylish. Don’t stray from what you consider your style. Take a look at the Petite items at Talbots. The quality is always excellent, and the offerings are timeless and classic.

  111. Can you please remind us of the name of the peds and undies that you recommended in a past video which I cannot locate? Thanks.

  112. Hi Susan, I have a wedding to attend and the dress I may wear is fitted in the waist. I’m 5’6” and wear a size 8/10. Would you recommend wearing spandex? If so what kind and what brand?

    Thank you,

    Kathy

    1. Do you mean Spanx? We are about the same size. In my case, I would wear a Shapeez.com Ultimate style bra and control top stockings over the lower edge for clean lines all the way.

  113. Dear Susan,

Wish that I had found yr blog sooner! Love yr style coupled with common sense for women of a certain age.

I find it difficult to shop online when I am searching for a navy top. White & black tops are no problem. Realize that navy is hard to match. Do you shop on line? Is there a trick for shopping for color tops?

    Thank you!

    1. I usually buy my navy tops from Talbots or J.Crew. Everlane also has some nice navy cotton shirts, tops, and sweaters. I don’t try to match navy with navy; rather, I wear it with white, faded denim, olive, and rust colors.

  114. In your “Spring Edit,” I didn’t see slacks, pants or jeans. How do you store those? I found your closet organization wonderful. I plan to copy when I get a walk-in closet. Been following you for years, just asking about the pants because I was curious if they potentially got stored in drawers.

    1. Hi Mikelle. Thanks for following along. I store slacks and jeans on a rolling rack in the spare bedroom to make it easier to see them. There wasn’t a proper bar in my walk-in closet to hang them length-wise. Here is the post that shows that bit.

  115. I have so enjoyed you blog. I was wondering if there were any other women bloggers you would recommend. I am an active 67 year old. I have tried to find other blogs for inspiration but I am sorry to say the ones I have found I have a hard time relating my lifestyle to. I don’t want to look 25 in ripped jeans but neither do I want to be frumpy. I simply want inspiration from others to be and look the best I can and be allowed to gracefully age. Yours is the only one I have found that does that. You have been so helpful, thank you

  116. Good morning Susan,

I’m glad you are enjoying Beaufort, SC as it is one of my favorite cities.

  117. I have been searching for a comfortable D cup bra all my life. I do not see any comments below your “Spring Vacation Wardrobe” 2020 video showing where it can be purchased.
The cup shown does not look like an A or B or maybe not even a C size. Please share the name, maker & where it can be purchased.

  118. There is someone using your likeness on a Facebook ad called Goldie’s Bra.

I do not think you know about this, a number of us recognized you and realized you are being misappropriated. Mori

  119. How tall are you, Susan? I have appreciated your advice and ideas, so when I look for items to purchase, Talbot’s doesn’t fit because I am 5’1″, and even their petite pants are 2″ too long. So as l look at your photos, I’d like to mentally re-proportion how certain clothes would look on a shorter person. Thanks for all you do.

  120. I would like to see again the article about how you lost weight and changed your eating habits after 50. I am a bit older (about 20 years) but would surely like to lose some pounds. The one thing I noted in your list of foods is that you don’t eat any beef. is that correct? I greatly admire your style and am in the process of minimizing my wardrobe. Thanks for what you do.

    1. As I age, I eat fewer calories unless I am very active on that day. I don’t eat mammals and rarely eat fish or chicken. Avoiding bread, sauces, condiments, and frequent desserts have helped me maintain my weight and health. Here is one of the articles I wrote about my weight loss journey.

  121. Hi Susan! Thank you. You are such an inspiration! I so enjoyed your you tube “talk”. Much like you, I have two businesses – Mary Kay for skincare and makeup, GelMoment for fabulous nails. Both are doing reasonably well. I am still working full time and want the businesses to top off my pension when I retire soon. I am 57. Would you have any advice for me? Thanks again!

    1. My best advice would include paying off any debt, saving as much of a nest egg as you can, and investing in classic clothing so that you can wear it in various ways over the years, rather than trendy items that always need to be updated.

  122. Hi Susan. I am leaving for a trip to France. My friend says you have great packing tips.

    1. Lucky you! I suggest taking pieces to mix and match for various looks, from daytime casual to possible dress-up looks for dinner. My packing list often includes black, white, and shades of blue or gray. For example, wear a black top and skirt with small heels for a dinnertime look. Wear the same black top with white pants and sneakers for a daytime look. If all the pieces are neutral and solid, you will find endless possibilities from a few pieces.

  123. Hello Susan,
I am looking for some fashion advice. Provided that it is not postponed, I will be attending a James Taylor concert next week! Very exciting, as James Taylor holds a place in the hearts of many. I am growing nervous about what to wear to this special event. Given the pandemic, many of us have stepped out into the public eye again and feel insecure about fashion choices. A concert adds some additional considerations. This event will be held in an indoor arena/stadium. There will be significant walking involved, and possibly alternating between standing and sitting. I honestly have no idea how dressy or casual to go! Can you give some guidance? THANK YOU!!!
    Cara Blair

    1. Hi Cara,
Wear something that makes you feel confident. Comfortable but smart-looking flat shoes to match the color or tone of your pants are also a good idea. Whatever you might wear out to a nice dinner will be fine. I don’t recall seeing anyone very dressed up at the last two concerts I attended. One was Sir Elton John; the other was Fleetwood Mac. We have certainly become a very casual society.

      Have fun!
      Susan

  124. Hello again Susan,
I emailed you last year when I learned of you and wanted to do the same again briefly, just to say that your new photos are very nice. You are still as beautiful and attractive as ever! Keep GOIN!
    My best,
    Joe.

  125. I’ve learned so much from reading your blog about how to dress. Can you please give some simple rules on how to dress for long legs, short waist and flat chest? Thanks!

  126. Girl you definitely amaze me…Looking great as always…I look pretty good myself at 67….lost my husband 10 years ago…
The pictures show that you might have a wedding band..: did you finally get married to that guy or did you get married to somebody else…Take care of my old friend

    1. Hi Ginny! It’s great to hear from you. I’m so sorry to hear about your husband.
I didn’t get married, but Mickey and I have been dating for more than fifteen years.
I hope that life is treating you well and that you are well and happy.

  127. I’m in need of a leather belt. Haven’t worn one in years. What is the best one for my capsule wardrobe?

  128. Bonjour Susan,
    Evelyne

  129. My eggplant jacket from Talbot’s came today and I love the color. Not at all what comes across my iPad. Thank you, thank you.

  130. I love all of your outfits. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for outfits for a two day trip to Las Vegas? My husband, two adult kids and their spouses, are going for a basketball tournament. We’ll be eating dinner out two nights. I live in Asheville and just don’t dress up any more. Any thoughts?

    1. If I were going to Vegas again soon, I would take light and dark-colored separates to mix and match as needed. For example, you could make several different looks from a white tank, a black tank, a gray blazer (or cardigan), blue jeans, black slacks, and a black skirt. Accessories will allow you to change the look of the pieces even more and take a pair of comfortable walking shoes that still look sharp and a pair to wear out to dinner. Cheers!

  131. I’m thinking about the upcoming holidays. Could you suggest some festive pieces for a few holiday events that are not super formal but a bit dressier than jeans.
    Thank you.

  132. I really love your style and outfits. I need a little advice. I’m attending a cocktail/engagement party in February an have a choice of a black or merlot colored dress. Both will need a pretty sweater of sorts due to the fact they are sleeveless. I’m not a fan of my arms, but I don’t want to look dowdy with the topper. Any suggestions? Maybe a shrug or cardigan? Black or white? Thanks in advance.

  133. Merry Christmas. Thank you for your inspiring messages. Looking forward to 2022 and wishing you a happy, healthy and blessed New Year.

  134. Miss Susan, several moths ago your message was for large busted women to avoid wearing. Is there any possibly You could send again? I have mislaid and you always are Number 1 when it comes to the best advice. LOVE Mr. Mickey also. Many thanks

  135. Hi Susan, all I want to do is change my email address and now I am asked math questions that never seem to end. I don’t mind answering some, but I think there may be something wrong, because the questions never end.
Could you please look into this, because I want to be subscribed to your blog
    Thank you

    1. You have successfully subscribed to the newsletter. You’ll receive a confirmation email in a few minutes. Please follow the link in it to confirm your subscription. If the email takes more than 15 minutes to appear in your mailbox, please check your spam folder.

  136. Hi Susan,
I’m going to Washington DC for July 4th. I was wondering if you have posted anything on outfits for cool comfort, with lots of walking, during hot 90° days of touring the city. I would love some ideas!

  137. Thank you very much for such a quick reply! Enjoy your Sunday- Spring is around the corner (I’m in North Carolina).
    Barbara.

  138. I have put in my email address but it repeatedly tells me to leave an email. Doesn’t seem to be accepting it.

  139. Thank you for all your inspiration. You have made me feel better about the choices I make. Keep on inspiring

  140. Susan, I’d love to try your lipstick, Girl’s Night, but when I go to the Beauty Counter site, I can’t find it. Could you help me? Thanks so much!

  141. Hi Susan. I have been following you for several years and have loved all your episodes. You had an episode where you spoke about a water filtration unit you use and I can’t remember the name of the machine. I would very much appreciate if you can email the info or the episode in which it appeared, Thank you.

    Keep up the great work….

  142. Congratulations! One, if not THE hardest decision, for my husband & me to make. Having said that, it was the best choice ever! Downsized & moved 8 years ago. Kept items we only needed ( or couldn’t part with) and moved to a college town. So many things to do, places to visit, and enough retail shops to fill our needs. Have established new doctors, dentists, and service personnel to fit our needs. Love it! So will you, once established. Good luck settling into a new life!

  143. Thank You Susan for all the help you have given me in the several month’s I have read your blog on Pinterest. You have pointed me in the right direction.

  144. Please, please help. I am 5’3” and have it all going on (with your fine advice) but I am having a devil of a time finding tops that aren’t a mile long. I am full busted and short waisted; so everything above my short waist is a CHALLENGE.

I have visited many websites to find tops that can be tucked in at the waist without circling my behind inside my slacks; but even more I woul love to have a casual or dressy top that can also be worn loose that doesn’t look “old lady” sloppy. I am coming up on 69 years and still have a fine figure; but I refuse to fall into the old lady nondescript tunic life.

I am not opposed to paying a bit more for a look I can enjoy.

    THANK YOU Susan.

    Donna Mintz

  145. Hi. I have admired your fashion sense for a few years now. I take a medication for arthritis that makes my arms bruise with the slightest bump. I think they are ugly and embarrassing. Our weather right now is in the 90’s and I hate having to wear long sleeves all the time when I go somewhere. I’ve tried all kinds of lotions, ointments, and gels without much help. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much!

    1. Unfortunately, that is one of the things that happens with age and certain medications. A lacy top with a loose fit and lots of ventilation might be your best choice.

  146. At 87 years ,still interested in looking my best and dressing well. Often get lovely comments on my clothing. Susan ,and good genes have helped me to not look my age. I keep active, play golf ,,for exercise and cards for keeping mentally active. Thank you Susan . Have tried to make purchases but find most out of stock.
    Thank you again .

    Maxine

  147. Susan,
how terrible it is to have such a positive posting site, so personal and caring of content, to be co-opted by unknown hackers and identity thieves….I so sorry this has happened to you.
Please remember and embrace how loved you are by your loyal community of style/ lifestyle explorers….you have changed me and others for the better as we age with joy and courage and beauty however changing, thank you.
    Be well and strong
    Brant

  148. Susan, I am seeing your picture used on FB pages that I thought you may not be aware of.
One site was Fasjion Star and the other was Daily Bee.
You may very well have approved these, but I wanted to be sure.

  149. Hi Susan,
At what age should a woman stop wearing jeans. I was horrified to read that 53 is the cut-off age according to the English. I’m 76 & still have jeans in my closet. I notice you still wear them & look great. What should I replace them with?

Maybe you could post an article on this. Thanks.

    1. I will turn 66 tomorrow and don’t plan to stop wearing jeans soon. I have replaced faded light blue jeans with a medium blue, which looks a bit more polished, but I never wore the type with holes in them.

  150. Hello, I would love to have some commentary on the way pink is now being used for fall in a pink and brown combination and winter with the traditional pink and gray. I’m sure it looks beautiful with your coloring and you must have some pieces in these combinations to share.
    Thanks!

  151. Do these fashions work on someone under 5 ft? I find it difficult because most items are for tall people. Example: scarves

    1. I am 5ft 6in tall, so I avoid tunics, anything oversized, and wide-leg pants. Even large thick scarves overwhelm me, so keep proportions in mind, but yes, any fashion can work for you.

  152. Susan
I need help as a 80 packing for a trip South for 2 1/2 weeks. I don’t want to take too much as I always do. I want to pack “maturely.”
    What to take?
    How many outfits?
Toiletries? ( I always take too much)
    Etc.
    Thanks in advance
    Pat

    1. Take basics that mix and match and those that can be layered when needed. Take the bare minimum of toiletries when you travel. Don’t stop your routine entirely, but give yourself a break from products whenever possible. As I age, I wear less makeup but concentrate on moisturizer and lip color.

  153. About 3 years ago you did a video using a large scarf showing different ways to use it. You called it garden of life I believe. I was wondering the dimensions of the scarf. The size makes it so versatile. Enjoy your videos.

  154. I love all your styles etc. I never find jeans that I’m happy with. For a more casual style, would you give some ideas for slacks? Something not heavy, but not clingy etc.
I love learning and trying your ideas.
    Thank you.

  155. Susan, I really like your hair now. It is the perfect cut and length for you and it makes you look young. You are an inspiration to me at 71 . Love your style.
I live in North Carolina and if my husband, Larry and I ever get to come your way we will try out some of the restaurants you suggest.

    Love, Kathy

  156. I love your fashion style-very classic. Since I live in southeast Louisiana, can I get some ideas for my hot and humid climate. Long sleeve outfits are only good here in our short winter. Summer is murder here.

  157. Hi, Your blog was mentioned as one of 8 great fashion blogs for women over 60. I thought you look lovely but I just am not a fan of jeans ever. everyone looks kind of like a poor person or a laborer in jeans no matter how much they try and dress them up. At least yours aren’t ripped. That really is ghastly. I think that tights can be more elegant looking ,especially with cute boots or Mocs. Just a suggestion.

  158. In each successive post you look more beautiful, confident and happy. Thank you for sharing your lifestyle choices and of course your capsule wardrobe creations. All the best to you and Mr. Mickey in this season of rebirth and renewal. BAT-S

  159. was wondering if you could tell me the brand of the socks you use for heels I somehow have miss placed the name. thank you so much.

  160. I truly miss you on social media, however, I understand and thoroughly support your decision. I am just not very good at checking blogs. So when I finally realize I haven’t seen yours in awhile it’s like sitting down with a good book and relaxing. Thank you for your insite and sharing yours and Mr Mickie’s life. Have a great spring!

  161. Hello Susan. I just turned 80 and am possessed in finding a black funeral outfit! I love the dress on Pinterest. V neck with short sleeves. Can you tell me where to buy it? At my age I just feel I have to be prepared

  162. Several years ago you posted the books you’ve read to get you on a healthy eating program. You also shared several of your favorite meals. Is there anywhere I can locate those old posts?

Hoping you’re doing well with you medical treatments. You’re in my prayers.

  163. Hello Susan,
I am often on Zoom Meetungs for work and have noticed I tend to look washed out on camera. I have short thin curly white hairwith blue eyes and fair skin with redness in the t zone area. I have access to natural western light in the afternoon. I do not know what type of makeup to apply to look professional and pulled together, but not theatrical. i am 62 so need makeup to look pepfessional but not over the top.
My lighting leaves a lot to be desired so any suggestions are welcome.

    Thank you,

    1. Whenever you are on camera, wear darker eye makeup, some foundation in the T-zone and blend it outward, and a bright red lip (not dark!). If you sit in front of a window with soft curtains or shades drawn so the light isn’t too harsh, you should look better than with full-on harsh lighting. You can also invest in a ring light for the best lighting.

  164. Dear Susan,
I was so sorry to read that you are seeing an oncologist. I did not catch earlier messages describing what your diagnosis entails. I hope you recover very quickly. I will be praying for you, Susan. (And as usual ~ you look beautiful in all your pictures! )
    Warmly,
    Ann

  165. Susan, I love your new hairdo!
In the jeans post, do you have a belt? And does the cropped shirt come up and show tummy?

  166. Please mention what that bra/shaper brand you love…I am having so many problems with my undergarments and need help! The back fat and muffin top have joined forces and I am. losing the war!!! My scale says I ‘m good but some sort of shifting has taken place and Im shocked and frustrated!
Grateful for all your tipsa and suggestions,
    Rosemarie in CT

  168. Susan, I so miss your posts. I admire your style and self-confidence.
I hope all is well with you.

  169. Susan, Am size 10, 130 pounds, 5’4, D cup and want a summer dress. Am sick and tired of black pants white top. Belk in Wilmington has gone to the dogs. Where can I shop online. What do I type in? I admired a green print you modeled to go to the grocery store. Any suggestions?

  170. Your ensembles are always sophisticated, age-appropriate without being dowdy, and so flattering to your figure. I notice that you tend to avoid cropped or baggy pants which can make one look shorter, heavier, or matronly. Your longer silhouette is so attractive. May I ask how tall you are?

Thank you for all the great inspiration…fashion and otherwise!

  171. I’m going to a winter wedding with a formal dress code (but this is NZ so not sure if they just mean wear your best clothes!), I was wondering what outfit ideas you would put together from your own wardrobe? I want to look nice and not frumpy, I’m 57. I’ve looked around every shop in our small town and there is nothing that gets my attention. Most dresses are pretty casual. I would like to pick your brains for some inspiration, Outfits don’t have to be a dress. Thanks I would appreciate your advice.

  172. Hi, just a note to say thank you for all the years of following you and reading your wonderful blog. You look more beautiful in each passing year. I have definitely gleaned many fashion & lifestyle tips over the years. I love to see your travel and restaurant posts as well.
We will be near Asheville for a wedding in late October. I want to go to Biltmore to see the Dale Chiluly exhibition. We live north of San Diego. We stayed in Asheville at a lovely hotel years ago but are thinking at staying at the Grove Park Inn or the Biltmore. I know it is nice to be downtown as well but would love your thoughts on accommodations. The wedding is actually in New Harris, GA. but we went to do some leaf peeping and explore some other cities. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

    1. The Biltmore has two lovely hotels on the grounds and several excellent hotels right outside the estate’s entrance. Black Mountain, Waynesville, and Lake Lure are also close by and have good hotels, interesting shops and galleries, and good restaurants. Here is a good website outlining some things to do in Asheville.

  173. Thank you Susan for your blog. You always look so lovely and your guidance has helped me towards looking my best. With the closure of Beautycounter, I am looking for new skincare. Have you found products you would recommend?
    Best wishes

  174. I really enjoyed viewing your website which I found to be professionally done and coupled with excellent photography. Very inspiring for anyone over 60 who may be thinking that real beauty only lies with those who are yet to reach middle age. Thank you Susan . Please keep up the great work!

  175. Followed you quite sometime ago always enjoyed your post .. are you still seeing the nice man that lived close to you.. I hope your doing well.. I am now 81 I have not been walking like I use to but plan to restart.. thank you for all your pointers on dressing
    Judy H

    1. Welcome back Judy! I sold my house and now stay with Mr. Mickey. He is 90 and needs some help so it works out well since I can still be there for my parents when they need me.

  176. You mentioned in one of your posts that you followed a French fashion icon for ideas on how to dress. Are you willing to share her name? I like the simplicity of your outfits and have many of the same elements in my closed.

  177. I am so glad you had a good time. My birthday was on 9th Sept. My husband of 52yrs died on 6th Sept. Best Regards. Judith

  178. I find following what you eat and when and why and why you dress the way you do and why rather exhausting , your life seems obsessed and taken over by it.You have no doubt got it all under control. My life seems so much simpler

    1. I’m happy and healthy. If you only have healthy food in your fridge and pantry and classic, simple, elegant clothing and accessories in your wardrobe, it takes some effort to make a mistake. Life is simple and uncomplicated without all the clutter and temptation.

  179. Happy birthday. Your site is beautiful and inspiring. I have learned so much and truly enjoy your travel places. I pray you both are safe and dry with this hurricane. I will be praying for you.

  180. Thank you Susan for all your ideas and information you are still looking beautiful.. praying for North Carolina and all the people there.. praying for your Mom God bless you both..

    Judy H

  181. Hi Susan
I’ve really enjoyed reading your blog for the past year and a half. I never miss a post and re read many several times. One that piqued my interest I believe this past summer was about having your colors done. I’m 71 and had them done 25 or 30 years ago but my complexion and hair color are no longer the same. I’m still keep my hair foiled with blond highlights and still have more pepper that salt. I would love to go with the hair color company which helped you and there is one in Massachusetts about 45 minutes from from my home. Would you please send me the name so I can book and appt please?

  182. I’m sorry to hear about the ugly emails on your closet organization. I enjoyed it although yours is quite different from most of us. There is no reason to leave an ugly comment simply for sharing.

  183. I have been watching your Email for a long time and have learned so much. Changed my wardrobe and now don’t need nearly as many clothes as I once had. You have taught me so much and get so many compliments from my friends. It’s always the highlight of my day when I see your Email and your husband is always so sharp looking too.
