The Next Chapter

On a recent Saturday lunch date, we visited the Sunset Terrace at the Grove Park Inn again. After lunch, we sat in the Great Hall, watching people for a while, then drove through the mountains on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The late morning sky was overcast, so the subdued lighting gave these images an old sepia tone. They were snapped before my recent haircut.

The clutch bag is by Olga Berg, and the shoes are by Anne Klein. Both items were purchased at Nordstrom.

The jeans are here. The top from White House Black Market last year has a camisole, so I wore it with the convertible strapless black bra here. The bra stayed put all day, and it was reasonably comfortable. A similar current top is here.

We didn’t plan to match!

Above is a view along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The photos were taken from a parking spot along the way; no hiking was required. We have had so much rain this summer that everything is lush and green with abundant wildflowers even near the end of July.

Some readers are baffled when I wear a jacket or cardigan in a summer post. When we drive to higher elevations less than an hour away, we experience a significant temperature drop. Today the temperatures dipped to fifty-eight degrees in the afternoon near the top of Mount Mitchell. At 6,684 feet, the mountain is the highest point east of the Mississippi River,

I’ve advised you to visit your doctor for annual checkups and screenings for several years. About six weeks ago, I went for my yearly mammogram, and within an hour, the technician called to say I needed to come in for another mammogram and a biopsy. The results show that I have invasive ductal carcinoma, the most common type of breast cancer.

Because I get regular mammograms, the cancer was discovered long before a lump could be found by self-examination. Since the diagnosis came very early, I am confident of full recovery. If you’ve followed any of my tips for fashion or healthy eating, I hope you will follow my example in this case as well and get a yearly mammogram.

A few weeks before my diagnosis, Mr. Mickey received the news that he has bladder cancer. We will always support and help each other through these challenging times. Again regular checkups and paying attention to changes in your body can significantly impact your long-term health.

Taking some time off for surgery and treatments is necessary, but I didn’t want to vanish without telling you why. My purpose in creating this site to share what I’ve learned has always been to help women become more confident, healthy, and look their best. I’ll be back to share more fun, fashion, and food tips with you soon.

My posts are never paid advertisements since I no longer accept gifts or do reviews of products I didn’t purchase. However, the shopping links on this site may allow me to earn a small commission without additional cost to you.

  1. Oh Susan, so sorry to hear yours and Mr Mickey’s news sincere wishes for you both to come through these trying times.

I would echo your advice about regular mammograms. Here in the UK routine screening takes place three yearly and at mine on June 1st a small lump was detected and after biopsy was found to be cancerous. I would never have felt the lump until things were much more serious. I’ve had a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy and am awaiting results from those. Hopefully then five rounds of radiotherapy and hormone therapy will see things right.

Positive thoughts to you Susan and to all who are experiencing health issues at this time.

  54. I was diagnosed with the same breast cancer 5 years ago. Very terrified at the time. Lumpectomy and radiation treatments were in order. Be aware of the burning near the end of radiation. Wearing no bra was the answer. I also had my hair cut and colored before treatment started. Mani and pedi was also in order. Something I noticed was that my hair and nails did not grow for 10 weeks. I also filled the freezer with quick meals to fix. It was an exhausting 2 to 3 months.

  55. Wishing you strength and courage and sending you love. I hope the goodness you have sent out over the years comes back to comfort you.

  56. I wish both of you return with good health. Life does get challenging at time. I had breast cancer about 12 years ago and so far so good. I do agree about staying current with our health checkups sometimes we do t want to go but feel better when we do.

  60. My thoughts go out to you both. It is certainly challenging to grow older. I am almost five years out from a similar diagnosis of BC. Please listen and act slowly to the advice you get. I was in a panic and even though the cancer was stage 1, grade 1, and removed completely and no sentinel node involvement was present, still wanted to take action. My radiologist stated that I would most likely be fine without it as long as I took an estrogen inhibitor for five years., which I have done . No chemo was necessary; a test proved that. I opted for sixteen sessions of radiation anyway, to be sure.
Two years late I am suffering another cancer, which the oncologists blame almost certainly on the radiation. Go slowly, evaluate everything, and get a second or even third opinion.
I don’t want to be a downer among all the good wishes, that’s not why I’m saying this. I truly wish both of you many good years together.

    Hope and love.

  61. Sad news for you two. Like you said, early detection is important. Wishing you all the courage and support you need as you fight these battles. Looking forward to good news in the future.

  79. Dear Susan,
I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Last year May 2022 I went through breast cancer diagnosis and surgery. Please research and get second opinions when you can. Through my journey I discovered Magtrace. It is injected prior to surgery. It may prevent you from having lymph nodes removed. That within itself is a whole other issue. Ask your Doctor about Magtrace.
    Sincerely,
    Mitzi

  86. Please continue with the good health tips! They are as important as your fashion information. Thanks, as always.

  87. Oh Susan – my younger sister received a similar diagnosis earlier this summer. She is very fit, takes care of herself, and we have no family history. Needless to say it was a shock for all. She opted for a double mastectomy even though the mammogram picked up cancer in only one breast. However, when they analyzed the removed tissue they found cancer in both breasts – so she clearly made the right decision, albeit a drastic one. Thank you for sharing your story as it may save someone’s life. My sister is recovering well and I hope you have the same experience. How awful that Mr. Mickey is having his own challenges at the same time – we are praying for you both, please keep us informed as you can.

  88. Dear Susan, so sorry to hear your health news. My thought are with you and Mr. Mickey for a good recovery. My husband and I, both in our mid 80’s have suffered earlier bouts with cancer and survived. Thanks to yearly examinations.

Susan, If comfortable in doing so, please provide a mailing address(PO Box) for an occasional card. Kind regards~ Cindy in VA

Thank you so much for sharing your diagnoses with us. It may remind others to keep up with medical appointments and examinations.

  120. All the best to you and Mr. Mickey. I had a small bladder cancer many years ago and had it taken out and just get yearly checks but I have been fine . ☺️❤️

  121. Susan, I will keep you and Mr. Mickey in my prayers for health, strength, and a full recovery. I am a 4-year survivor of invasive ductal carcinoma, found in both breasts, and I have outstanding quality of life (I’m 67 years old). Happily, treatment and follow-up for this particular type of breast cancer has come a looooong way in the last few years. I hope that you, like me, will find that there is no need for chemo therapy, and perhaps none for radiation, although your doctor will know what’s best.

I will look forward to reading more from you when you are ready.

    All the best –
    Joy

  122. Best wishes for you and Mr Mickey! Our 47 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with invasive Ductal carcinoma following a routine mammogram. After a lumpectomy x2 was unsuccessful in getting clear margins she elected to have a bilateral mastectomy. Early detection made the difference in her treatment..no need for radiation or chemo for which we are very thankful. She is in the process of preparing for reconstructive surgery that will be done in the fall.

You have a great attitude which is so important! I know you will do well!!

  123. So terribly sorry to hear this … sending love and prayers to you both and hoping you are both better very soon . Xxxxxxx

  124. Good luck Susan and God bless! I too had ductile carcinoma 32 yrs ago. 90% of the worst battles of our lives are fought between our ears… I survived!
    LuAnn Carter

  125. Wishing both you and Mr Mickey the best results. I thoroughly enjoy your posts since I’m of your generation, I regard you as my stylish friends. Take care…Mary

  126. So terribly sorry to hear this … sending love and prayers to you both and hoping you are better very soon . We will really miss your posts and looking forward to hearing from you soon . Xxxxxxx

  127. Yours was my diagnosis now 13 years ago. While all cancers are different; I know you’ll be OK if you do what you are told.. And, cancer care has notably advanced.. Hugs from afar,

  128. My thoughts & prayers are for uneventful treatment regimens & complete eradication of disease for both you & Mr. Mickey. We will miss your posts but look forward to your return. I know you will take good care of one another.

  129. Susan,
I have been following you for several years. I am wishing both Mr. Mickey and you all the best as you begin your treatments. Please know that you will be in our prayers.
    Kristine

  130. Best of luck with your surgery. I had a mastectomy in March. Luckily the cancer was stage 0 and contained in the duct. I’m back to regular exercise classes now, and feeling great. Wishing the same for ou.

  131. Prayers and best wishes for both you and Mr.Mickey. You have been an inspiration to me and I know your next chapter will be inspiring and a learning experience we can all benefit from.Thank you for the very classy way you dispel this news to your tribe.

  132. Susan, I am SO sorry for yours and Mr. M’s cancer diagnosis’. I’m a 10 year survivor of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (Stage 2). I was always diligent w/ my mammograms and that’s what ultimately caught it. I had a double mastectomy (even tho the cancer was found in only 1 breast) with immediate reconstruction. I wasn’t given much advice back then but if I knew then what I know now I 100% would NOT have gotten implants. Last year I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that may be linked to the implants. (Research BII). Silly me, I just wanted to look “normal” and put cancer in the rearview mirror! So, long story short, I had the implants removed a few months ago. I am now a “flat” chick and actually not minding it at all. Cancer gave me the breast reduction I always wanted. One positive way to look at it, which I always try to do!
My father had bladder cancer so unfortunately I’m very familiar with that as well. My best wishes for healing and a very short cancer story for you both.

  133. Prayers for both of you. You are such an inspiration in so many ways. I have followed you since Fifty, Not Frumpy. I look forward to your future posts and wish you the best. My husband is an oncologist and sees healing everyday!

  134. Sincere best wishes to you and Mr Mickey for successful treatment and speedy recoveries. Take all the time you need! Your health is most important.

  136. Fingers crossed all goes well for you. I have also had three lumpectomies and hold my breath each yr for my mammograms. Take good care!

  137. Dear Susan and Mr Mickey, so very sorry to hear about your health scares. You are such a lovely couple. I know you will be there for one another. Good Bless you both. Stay strong

  142. I am so sorry for both of you. Prayers for a quick treatment and recovery. You will be so missed. If can please let us hear from you both.

  145. Many good thoughts to you both. I look forward to your postings. They are positive and up lifting. Prayers for a fast recovery and sending positive thoughts.

  146. I am very sorry to hear about the cancer diagnoses. As we get older we are finding ourselves dealing with many health issues. The good thing for all of us is that there are so many better options than even a few years ago.

My husband was diagnosed with bladder cancer a couple of years ago. In his journey, he found a wonderful organization. It’s called BCAN or Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network. They have podcasts and online information about bladder cancer. They are very involved in bladder cancer research. They have people available to talk to that have experienced bladder cancer. When he was diagnosed and when he was operated on, we how had so many questions and we didn’t know where to get answers. If only we had known about BCAN then. I would strongly encourage Mr. Mickey to check out this group.

Best wishes and good thoughts to both of you!

  147. May you both have peace and experience excellent care and good results with whatever treatment you decide to pursue.
Many blessings. I will pray for both of you.

  148. Sending you both prayers and positive energy for a quick healing. I’m so happy that both of you have early diagnosis. I’m hoping for quick recoveries

  149. So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I had breast cancer 13 years ago but am doing well now. I hope your treatment will be very successful. My regards to Mr Mickey also. Jacqueline

  150. I battled the same carcinoma in 2011. Had lumpectomy and radiation followed by 5 yrs of tamoxifen. Tough times but I’ve been great since. My husband has battled prostate cancer for 6 yrs also. We have definitely supported each other and just keep moving forward. Good luck with everything and keep us posted.

  151. Prayers for you both. I too was diagnosed with IDC in 2013. While I am so sorry that you have to go through this, it’s curable and will be history before you know it. I’m happy to correspond privately if you would ever want to compare notes.

    Sending prayers for you both!

  155. You and Mr Mickey are in my prayers, Susan. My daughter had the same form of breast cancer as you have and has made a full recovery following a lumpectomy. You are fortunate to have it diagnosed early.

  156. Susan, I am sorry to hear about the health issues you and Mr. Mickey are going through. You are wise to get regular mammograms which can detect cancer before it could be discovered by a self-exam. I’m happy to hear you have a good prognosis and will keep both you and Mr. Mickey in my thoughts and prayers while you are going through treatments.

  157. I am so sorry to read this. I, too went through a cancer journey a year ago and it isn’t easy but taking it one day at a time and rejoicing in every day helps. After a hard fought 3 year battle with cancer, I lost the love of my life in April. Until his illness we maintained separate residences for a few days each week for over 30 years..We stayed “in love”, excited to see each other, appreciative of each other’s interests….Best of all, we were such loves and best friends we had no issues with merging our lives full time the last 3.. He cared for me when I had surgery for a pre cancerous ductal diagnosis in 2017.. I was able to do the same when he was diagnosed with colo-rectal carcinoma in 2020….Will look forward to seeing you back. Attitude is 99%..

I shall be thinking of you both as you take on whatever comes your way.
    Kind regards.

  193. Wishing you & Mr. Mickey all the best with your cancer treatments! Much love, may I ask, did they discover the bladder cancer with routine blood tests?
    Nancy

    1. The symptoms included blood in the urine, lower back pain, and frequent night urination. A camera was inserted into the bladder to discover a small cancerous tumor.

  194. Susan and Mr. Mickey….I am so glad that you both have early diagnoses and timely intervention towards recovery. After reading the multitude of good wishes, know you have an army of online friends standing by to support you any way we can. Take care, follow through and we will be waiting anxiously for your return. Hugs!

  195. Dear Susan, I too had the same type cancer you have. I had a lumpectomy and radiation and now take an anti estrogen pill every day for 5-10 years. My cancer was in 2019.

  200. I’m sorry to hear of your and Mr Mickey’s cancer diagnosis. I will pray for a good outcome for both of you. I had the same breast cancer diagnosis in 2019 and had a lumpectomy and radiation treatment. I just saw my oncologist today and will have another mammogram in a few weeks. He told me that my last visit will be in April and I will discontinue with the hormone reducing medicine. My cancer was found because of a routine mammogram. It was found early. So I highly recommend getting routine mammograms. Please everyone don’t skip them. They will save your life!

We took short hikes along mountain streams that were refreshing to body, mind and soul. We enjoyed delicious restaurant meals and picnics. Each sunset was spectacular. It was all as you have described!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge about how to choose and style clothes for an older woman – I didn’t know what to do until I found your blog. A bonus was your way of eating and exercising, which has helped me lose weight and feel much better. 230. Dear Susan,

I’m so sorry to hear that you have breast cancer. With good care I’m sure that yo will have a speedy recovery.

My thoughts are with Mr. Mickey. I too have bladder cancer. It was caught early but my oncologist believes in erring on the side of caution so I have had several cystoscopies and about 30 chemo treatments. While it isn’t a walk in the park, the treatments aren’t too difficult. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.
    Love,
    Katie Thomas

  231. I’m a two time breast cancer survivor; both times detected early through a routine mammogram.

  239. Susan, you are an inspiration, a beautiful lady who models elegance with ease. Thank you for sharing your beauty regimens, lovely times with Mickey and classic style. My prayers will be for you and Mickey to have successful surgeries and be back to posting updates when you feel up to it. I recently turned 70 and was widowed a year ago. I set goals, have constant “to do” lists and projects but struggle with weight and exercise. I appreciate your sharing how you work hard to look so attractive. Your inner beauty shines through. Kindest regards, Ro

  246. Susan I am so sorry to hear the news of your and Mr Mickey’s health problems. I’m glad they have been found early and that, plus your positive attitudes, will serve you both well. You are so right in recommending regular examinations and testing as the best way of early detection and recovery. I wish you both all the best for a speedy recovery.

  247. Dear Susan, I was so sorry to hear that you and Mr Mickey have had such awful news. I love your positive attitude to life and enjoy hearing about your adventures together. Take care and look after each other. I look forward to better news for you both. Helen

  248. So sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Please check out a book- The Iodine Crisis by Lynne Farrow-

  249. As the hundreds of comments show, you and Mr Mickey are like family to many of us subscribers/readers and we are shocked and saddened to hear of your diagnoses. It shows what an amazing person you are to think of us when you tell us your news and say you don’t want to go into radio silence without explanation. Your positive attitude has always seen you through. May it do so again. Wishing you both all the very best.

  250. Oh Susan, praying for your and Mr. Mickey’s complete healing and thank you for your bravery and unselfishness in sharing your story which will no doubt save lives! You inspire me to shop more carefully and eat more mindfully and now, to handle difficulty with grace.

  251. I am now 82 years old and was diagnosed with the same cancer you have when I was 50 years old. I chose to have a mastectomy and reconstructtion–did not need chemo or any other treatment after that–have been fine.

This past year my husband,, 85, was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He had surgery for the removal of the tumor and was treated with BCG at the NJ Cancer Institute and is doing well.

Good luck to both you and Mr. Mickey.

PS: I have been following you for a long time and enjoy your emails immensely. Thank you.

  252. Prayer for you and Mr Mickey, sweet friend. You are an inspiration to me as you live your life with elegance and grace.

  253. Susan I have been following your journey in life now for nearly a year. Each posting of your adventures with Mickie were thoroughly exciting while you shared the tips on fashion, travel, etiquette and so much more. Although it has been alarming to hear both you and Mickie have been diagnosed within a short period of time with health issues that will be addressed in the upcoming months, know that your cheerleaders are rooting for a positive outcome. Thanks for being an inspiration in many ways from day one!

  254. Thank you for letting us know about your diagnosis.
The fact that it has been detected so early is a very good indicator for a successful outcome,
Please keep us updated if you feel up to it.
    Best regards to you both

  255. Susan, sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. As it happens, you and I are on the same track! I write this this sitting in same day surgery with same diagnosis and background (regular mammograms pay off!) It’s still a little scary but I too believe the outcome will be okay. Prayers for your outcome too. It’s a journey…

  256. Thank you for letting us know about both of your health issues. We will be praying for you and Mr. Mickey!

  257. So sad to hear about your diagnosis and Mr Mickey’s. Both are treatable, trust your physicians and have faith that treatment will work. Faith and trust….. two very difficult things to do. Believe.

  258. My prayers and many blessings for your healing and Mr Mickey’s comfort and recovery.

Your positive attitude is imperative and prayer and meditation are soothing to the soul and help the body heal.

Many hugs to both of you! Til soon my dear Susan!

  259. Thank you once again for sharing your life with us and thereby encouraging us to take care of ourselves in so many ways. You are often a life saver! Nancy from Burlington, Ontario

  260. Dear Susan, so sorry you are going thru this bump in the road. Thirteen years ago I went thru the same scenario. My tumor had not spread but was a vicious pathology. I had bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction, chemo and then herceptin for a year. Truthfully I worked thru it all except for six weeks. I credit following the China study diet and good health and wonderful medical team. Blessings darling, you have got this. Bette O’Connor RN, MSNAP AOCN

  261. Susan, I am saddened by this news. My prayers and best wishes for you and Mr. Mickey will be with as you go through this treatment and healing journey.

  262. Praying for you and Mr. Mickey’s treatment and complete healing!

  263. I’m keeping you and Mr. Mickey in my prayers for strength and a quick and full recovery. Take all the time you need. You’ve got this!

  264. Sorry to hear about the news of your mammogram results, but sounds like you found it early. Also sorry to hear of Mr. Mickey’s bladder cancer. My husband, who is 83, sees a urologist yearly and was diagnosed with bladder cancer about a year ago. They were able to remove the cancer and is checked every 6 months. Will keep you both in my prayers. I will turn 80 in October and have followed you for several years and enjoy your articles so very much. I feel as though I know you personally. ❤️

  265. Reading all of these comments it’s clear that everyone has already said anything I could say. So, just know that I love you and Mr. Mickey and wish you both a speedy recovery.

  266. I wish you and Mr. Mickey, a quick recovery and hope everything works out for the best, without major damage to your physical condition. You will be in my prayers, a big hug from Portugal and hope to see your posts very soon.

  267. SENDING prayers for you and Mr. Mickey. Claiming TO JESUS ALL WILL BE WELL!! LOVE YOU BOTH!!

  268. I am so sorry. I want to give you hope since I had breast cancer a few years ago. Please do all the doctors ask. You will be fine if you do. I go all the time. The treatments are not pleasant but they work. I know you will do it and succeed.

  269. Just want to congratulate, and thank, you, for using your platform for helping me, and countless other women. I wonder how many mammogram appointments have been scheduled by this column. How many are stepping out of their fear and finally making that phone call? You made it sound so easy and uncomplicated – no big deal! Makes me smile just thinking about it. Bravo!

And I thank you (again, I’ve written before) for your words of advice on looking my best, shopping my own closet, celebrating friendships and love and the beauty of the world around us. Your influence goes well beyond an outfit or lipstick.

Thank you, and I wish you continued good health and vitality.

    Mindy

  273. So sorry to hear about both of you having health concerns. I am going thru something right now and have started radiation treatments. If you or Mr. Mickey have to have radiation treatments, please feel free to contact me and I’ll tell you that it’s not painful and you can get thru this. I wish you the best of everything and will say a prayer as I push the send button.

  286. I too am currently battling Invasive Ductal Cancer (HER2+ HR-). I have had chemo (the worst part of the process), a double mastectomy, physical therapy (essential) and will be starting radiation treatment. Mine was found on a Mammogram as well. I believe in the power of prayer and will lift you both up in my prayers. You posts have been a real source of joy for me. Thank you and God bless you both.

  287. I wish you both a speedy recovery and send good wishes for more mountain adventures soon! Take care of yourselves and each other.

  288. Oh no! I’m so sadden to hear the news of your snd Mr. Mickey’s illnesses. Wishing you and Mr.Mickey a quick and successful recovery.

  298. Wow, you two are amazing. Both looking so classy no matter where you go, but “matching” just made you look so adorable as a couple.

My heart dropped when I read about your news Susan. May you both have good news to post soon on your progress. throughout this ordeal. Both of you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Take care and God bless you and Mr. M.

    Charlene Watt

  301. Taking a moment to say a prayer for you and Mr Mickey for successful treatments and complete recovery. And also a prayer for all who will be providing your treatment and care. I just scheduled my yearly mammogram yesterday; I’ve become more vigilant about getting one annually since my mom had breast cancer 10 years ago. Please know that we will all be thinking of you, and waiting for the day you feel well enough to start posting again. Take care

  302. Prayers to you and Mr. Mickey. Your positive thinking will get you through this.
Until your next post….be well and take good care of each other.
    Feel my hugs…

  308. So many of my family and friends are experiencing similar news. We will look forward to your news when you return and meanwhile keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

  309. My heart has taken a huge lurch with yours and Mr. Mickey’s news. My prayers continue for you both. Thank you so much for sharing, so that all your many, many readers can hold you in prayer.

Your photos of the mountains along the Blue Ridge are the best I’ve ever seen and we ride up there frequently! Lovely, inspiring photos for both you and Mr. Mickey to enjoy the peace and calm as you focus on healing.

Know that you are both loved and admired.

  310. Susan,
I will add you to my prayer list. You are a very inspiring woman and I enjoy each and every one of your posts. Thank you for being so honest and also for being considerate of those of us who have followed you for years. It would have been concerning for your posts to have just ended.
I’m thankful that your diagnosis was revealed early and I’m sure you’ll do very well with everything. You are a very strong, very kind, confident woman, I’ll eagerly await your return. Again you’ll be in my prayers. Sincerely, Pam

  312. I am so sorry to hear this. I look forward to your speedy return to your postings and send wishes for full recovery for you and Mr. Mickey.

  313. I’m a longtime follower of your blog and especially appreciate your good sense and ethical approach to fashion. Glad you are taking care of yourself and prayers for the best possible outcomes for you and Mr. Mickey. Looking forward to your return when you are up to it.

  314. Thank you for sharing as it is a great reminder to take care of yourself. You are both in my prayers. Hoping to hear from you soon.

  315. I hope you both pass through this time of treatment quickly to the status of total remission. I need to tell you how grateful I am for all that you have shared. Whenever I see one of your posts come up, I make a time during my day and sit and treasure every moment, looking over the pictures several times, clicking on each link, going to a map and checking on the places you travel. You and Mr. Mickey feel like friends. Thank you for all the fun times. Thank you for the inspiration. As you go through these days, know that a stranger is praying for you both to have an easy time of it, and that you will be blessed and surrounded with compassionate people. I feel sorry that I can’t give back to you what you have given to me. I will be waiting for you when you are finished with treatments and are able. With love and support for you both…

  316. Best wishes to you and and Mr. Mickey as you travel your next chapter in life. I know we readers will channel love and support to both of you during this challenging period. Sending virtual hugs to you and Mr. Mickey.

  317. Susan, thank you for sharing your journey and especially the reminder about yearly mammograms. I also had breast cancer and the best advice I can give is research and get the best doctors you can. If you aren’t comfortable with the advice, get a second opinion. Then, take your doctors (surgical, oncology, radiation) advice. I am 7 years cancer free. It is a long experience to have breast cancer, but it is manageable. With God’s guidance and comfort, you will be at peace throughout the time of treatment. Prayers for you and Mr. Mickey as you both go through this together.

  318. I am so very sorry to hear about both of you & your diagnoses. I feel like you have become part of my life & wish you only the best. Life can definitely have some challenges as we age. Your good attitudes will definitely help in your recovery. Bless you both. ❤️

  319. Susan, I have always followed you and have learned so much through the last several years. I am sadden to hear of your diagnosis as well as Mr. Mickey’s. I know God will give you both strength and grace for healing. I had the same type of breast cancer 12 years ago and I’m so glad they caught it early! I will pray for both of you and ask God for a total and speedy recovery. I look forward to the day when you will return online. God bless both of you!

  320. Oh my. Before I read ALL of the 453 comments, I want to add my own with the tag #breast cancer survivor. I too am a testimonial for early detection. My diagnosis came in 2021. Initially, I was in disbelief because the tumor was SO tiny, how could I have cancer? That both you and Mr Mickey will be starting cancer treatments is sobering to think about and know that your online support team – that would be all of us – will be holding you both in healing energy and prayer. When you can, stay in touch with us. Don’t feel that you have to stick to what have become your signature topics. You could create a short blog about a blade of grass and we would be happy with that. Having said that, we of course understand that there are times when you need to step back and focus on what is in front of you. For myself? I’ll think of you and Mr Mickey every day and revisit your blog to re-read some of your posts. There is much wisdom and joy here.

  321. Praying praying for both of you! May the Lord give you both full recovery! Much love and blessings!
    Glenna

  322. Thank you for your candor and my heart goes out to both of you on your diagnoses. You empower women to do things to be their best selves, even when that is difficult. Half of all people will have a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, so sharing your story helps ease the fear in others, especially when it comes to screenings. If we want health care providers to do their best for us, we have to show up. That is what you do, in so many ways. Here is a big (but gentle) hug across the miles

  323. Susan, I was saddened to learn of your diagnosis and Mr, Mickey’s as well. Incredible that you will both be facing this at the same time. Wishing you both speedy recovery from the treatments and hope you still pop in once in a while to let us know how you’re doing and I hope you feel the love and support of your followers as you deal with this. No doubt your courage and graciousness will get you through this. God bless.

  324. My dearest lady, becoming a member of the “C” club can be devastating at the moment of receiving the diagnosis. I still remember, extremely clear, that moment when the telephone call came in “ yep, it’s cancer”. Said with such an unemotional voice. Since then I hear that from a lot friends and acquaintances. I guess there is no easy way to tell a patient that news, but, when I hung up my phone I had a complete emotional break down for about ten minutes.
I had lost my soulmate two years before and. I felt so alone. But then, I squared my shoulders and began to research my options,
Each of us must make our decisions about our personal health and how to go forward with treatment. Having friends and family to give us love and support is reassuring.
I just wanted to let you know that there are many of us out here sending you love, support and respect. We’ll be here pulling for you and praying for the best results.

  325. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. That might sound trite now a days, but it is most heartfelt. You have made such a difference in my life, and I have so enjoyed your “visits” as well as good sense to my life. May God bless and keep you both. Please, please keep in touch.
With loving thoughts and prayers for you both,
    Christine

  326. Susan, I wish you and Mr Mickey the very best in the future times. Be kind to yourselves, and hopefully you will have good recoveries. I will miss you, and think of you.

  327. Prayers for strength and healing for both you and Mr. Mickey. May you feel the love and support of God through your family and friends.

  328. Wishing you both all the best on this journey. My daughter was recently diagnosed with the same, which was caught early, like yours. I’m glad you have each other. Take care.

  329. Prayers for strength, peace, and healing for you and Mr. Mickey. May you feel the love and support of God Our Father through the care of family and friends during this challenging time

  330. You are an inspiration in so many ways. I will be praying for you and Mr. Mickey as you both face surgery and recovery. Blessings to you both ❤️

  331. Susan, I can only echo what so many others have said. Wishing you and Mr. Mickey a smooth recovery and more happy adventures together. Thank you for all your inspiring posts. You are both gems and role models.
    Blessings to you both!

  332. Prayers are being sent up for you and Mr.M. May God’s blessings bring you peace and comfort and work through the hands of your medical professionals.

  333. Sending healing prayers to you and Mr. Mickey. Looking forward to seeing your posts in my inbox – hopefully soon enough to capture the beautiful fall weather in the mountains!

  334. Hi Susan
I just wanted to let you know that I am sorry that you both are having health challenges at the moment
I wish you both a speedy recovery and send you warmest best wishes from Ireland
    Thinking about you both

    Margo

  335. Oh, my sweet friend, that is so unfortunate, that both of you are diagnosed with cancer at the same time. Prayers for you and Mr. Mickey. Drop in occasionally and let us know how you are doing. Hugs ML

  336. Love and prayers for a speedy healthy recovery to you both. You are a wonderful inspiration of healthy living and positive attitudes. I will look back for that inspiration until you’re up and running again.

  337. Susan,

I will be praying for peace and comfort as you undergo your surgery and treatments. I also will be praying for Mr. Mickey. Please take the time necessary for yourself to have a complete recovery. I so enjoy your blog and look forward to your return.

    Sincerely,
    Ginger

  338. Wishing you both a speedy, full recovery. Your blogs have been such an inspiring example of how women can continue to achieve confidence, classic style and ageless beauty in their later years.

  339. Susan, wishing you and Mr. Mickey all the best in your journey ahead. Thankful for your regular check ups! Good reminder for all of us.

  340. Praying for both of you for the days ahead. I’ve been reading a little book called Life is Messy by Australian motivational speaker Matthew Kelly. It’s easy to read with short chapters, so you can read it in bits when you have 5 minutes. It’s available on Amazon. I think it would encourage both of you during this time. I have no idea what spiritual beliefs you might hold, but this would certainly be a time to lean into God. If you have a Bible, may I suggest the gospel of John and many of the Psalms? Both will be encouraging!

  341. Sending prayers and positive thoughts for you and Mr. Mikey. Take your time to look after yourselves and know that many hold you both in our thoughts as you go through this.

  342. I pray that you and Mr. Mickey have a quick recovery so that the two of you can have many more lovely adventures together. God Bless you, Marie

  343. Susan-
My 42 year old daughter was diagnosed with ISDC within the last month. My heart is aching as she faces double mastectomies in a few weeks. I pray your journey is short and you and Mr. Mickey heal completely and quickly.
    Wendy

  344. I am so sorry you are both having to deal with this terrible disease and I wish you both a smooth recovery

  345. Susan,
Mr. Mickey and you are in my thoughts and prayers. I have been an avid reader of your posts. I look forward to your future posts. Take care.
    Sincerely,
    Audrey

  346. I’m so sorry to hear of this diagnosis. I had breast cancer 14 years ago, too. I know you take such good care of yourself and will have excellent care. You will also be looking back on this time of treatment and diagnosis someday. One piece of advice a nurse gave me was now is not the time to go to the theatre—the idea being avoid large groups of people if going through chemotherapy since it lowers your resistance. Just settle in, get doctors you respect and trust, and take good care of yourself. Don’t look up things on the internet; breast cancer has so many variables. I’ll be thinking of you.

  347. Will be adding you all to my prayers. Thank you for sharing your health challenges and your honesty and encouragement. Wishing you all the best. Take care and know you have brought joy to so many of us.

  348. Dear Susan and Mr Micky,
I was saddened to receive your news today. Your adventures together will be missed. My prayers and I’m sure many others will be said for you both. Thank you for sharing with us and your continued care for us. Yearly exams are a must!!!!
    Prayerfully,
    Mary Holstrom

  349. So sorry to hear you both are experiencing this. Sending my best thoughts and energy for smooth treatment and amazing recovery!

  350. What an inspiration you are! I always look forward to reading your posts and I love reading about you and all that you and Mr.Mickey do. Please know that you two are in my thoughts and prayers. We serve a Mighty God and there is such power in prayer. Thinking of you

  351. Prayers and positivity in mind and mood towards healing!
You are a lovely woman with a lovely life, and partner!
And may I add, many of us here are pulling for you both.

  352. Oh my what a shocking email this morning! I do want to share I had the same BC 10 years ago. Please do full removal with implants in both breast. I started with lumpectomy and so sorry I dd. Three years ago I lost it all with no implants now. I avoid mirrors LOL. Treatment protocol is 10 years. I started with 35 rounds of radiation; no chemo needed as it had not spread. Then I did 6 years on Tomaxifen and only 6 months on Armidex before it destroyed my bones and I gained 30 pounds, high blood pressure, etc. Awful drug! You can stay on Tomaxifen 6-10 years if you wish. It does not destroy bones. It is always your choice – remember this always.
As for Mr. Mickey, we know many men who have had the bladder wash treatment for their bladder cancer and are living full lives some 10 years later. We know one man a new bladder was made for him (he’s doing great too) So glad Mr. Mickey has found his early too! Keep in mind Emory Winship Cancer Center has a lot of new advancements in cancer. Same for UTenn Knoxville and Vanderbilt.
You both are in our thoughts and prayers. It is so sweet you have each other to go through this new journey together with. GOD is in control of it all.
    Blessings to both of you,
    Sandy
    Dahlonega, GA

  355. Susan,
I had DCIS 5 years ago and opted for double mastectomy. I didn’t need chemo or radiation- I was very lucky. You’ve got this! I’m sure you’ll have many, many women routing for you (and men ).
Thinking of you as you navigate this new reality. And Mr Mickey too- cancer truly sucks.

  356. I am so sorry to hear about you and Mr. Mickey’s cancer challenges. A year ago I had a mammogram and biopsy scare. Mine turned out to be a cist, but I understand the trauma it causes. I am a believer and will be praying for you, Susan, and Mr. Mickey. You have helped older women like me to appreciate and enjoy fashion, style, and life through your blog. May you both be restored to health and have peace as you walk this path.

Will look forward to updates as you feel led.
Thank you for sharing and encouraging others to watch their health needs with regular checkups!
    We learn from each other.

  369. The best to both of you on this journey. As I also age, along with my friends, news of this sort has become a little more common then we would all like. So thankful for the wonderful Drs. and institutions that give us so much hope.

  370. Dear Susan,
I am saddened to hear that both you and Mr. Mickey have received cancer diagnoses. Both of you will be in my prayers for full recoveries. Thank you for sharing this news and the importance of regular mammograms and checkups. May God grant you both peace and strength.
    Marilyn M.

  371. Sending wishes for a complete and fast recovery for both you and Mr. Mickey. I had the same diagnosis in 2016 and put it in my rear view mirror in less than a year. It is such a common diagnosis. And early diagnosis for any cancer is so important. I am sure with this post you and Mr Mickey have prompted someone to screen and will likely save a life or two. I decided to go week by week and keep my eye on the goal to new health.

  372. Dear Susan. Such an outpouring of support for you and Mr.Mickey! Breast cancer is scary but very manageable today. 50% of breast cancers are found in women over 65, so you are not alone! I had treatment for breast cancer five years ago and am doing well. One great source of information and support for me was the online group breastcancer.org. I wish you and Mr. Mickey all the best for easy treatments and a successful outcome.

  373. So sorry to hear about your and Mr. Mickey cancer diagnosis. You will both be in my prayers. Let us know how things go.

    Love your blog.

  375. Susan: Over the years, your wonderful and caring messages have been fantastic: walking, dining, touring, packing, coordinating, scarves, hats, glasses … incredible adventures with a fashion flare

While this health situation will soon be in the rear view mirror, I want to tell you —- and the delightful Mr. Mickey —- I will miss you both. (As my relative Winston Churchill said, “When you’re going through hell, keep going.”) I look forward to you and Mr. Mickey on the road again.

  376. I was so sorry to read about your and Mr. Mickey’s health challenges. Thank you for the courage it took to share this news with us. I’ll be sending good thoughts and healing energy your way. I’m hopeful that all will be well for both of you in the near future.

My husband & I face our health challenges head-on together. You take it a day at a time with grace, faith and courage.

  380. Sending prayers and healing vibes to you and Mr. Mickey. Gosh I hate cancer so much. I know that your healthy lifestyle will help you through this journey.

  381. So sorry to hear this health news for you and Mr. Mickey. I went in for a routine mammogram in 2002 and was told I had ductal carcinoma in situ or DCIS. It was caught very early and I underwent a lumpectomy and then radiation. Now 21 years later, I am cancer free and in great health other than needing to have gallbladder surgery in my near future. I pray that you and Mr. Mickey will have excellent medical care and a speedy and full recovery. Best wishes to you both!

  382. I am so sorry you both are going through all this. Praying for a quick and successful recovery.
    Cathy

  405. Thank you Susan for sharing. My doctor gave me a script for my mamo 2 months ago and its sitting on my vanity. Because of you, I’m calling to make my appointment as soon as I finish typing. I do get it every year too … but I’ve lagged in making the call. Thank you.
Good luck with your treatments. It certainly sounds like you did catch it in time, thank the Good Lord. And I also wish the same for Mr. Micky.
When you are ready to post your wonderful outfits and suggestions, I’ll be here ready to enjoy them. But in the meantime, you take care of Susan.
Thank you for your site … and thank you for making me Make that call for an appointment.
    Very sincerely, Georgieanne Ross

  406. Praying for you and Mr Mickey as you undergo treatments. My prayer is for excellent results and peace during them.

  407. Susan,
My breast cancer was found the same as yours. No lump or symptoms… just a routine mammogram. I haven’t missed an anual screening for decades. Added an ultrasound because of dense breasts.

The best information I found is Breastcancer.org. They have medical consultants to ensure accurate information and are
the most up-to-date. Finding this website eased the upset I was feeling and calmed me.

I”m sorry to hear of you and Mr. Mickey’s diagnosis(s).

  408. Thank you for sharing your new chapter,
I’m sure there will be challenges ahead for you and Mr Mickey, you both have such positive attitudes I’m know you will meet them head on.

I’m sending much love and hugs for a speedy recovery.
I look forward to updates when you are able.

  409. I will be praying for you Both. You have been a wonderful example to all of us. I know you will keep a great attitude. We were just in your area last week and it is so beautiful…We visited the Pretty Place Chapel in Cleveland, SC. It was breathtaking… Keep us posted on how you both are doing. Keep strong , Give your burdens to God . Frances P.

  410. Wishing you and Mr. Mickey the best in your treatments and recovery. Hope you keep us posted in an update once in awhile to let us know how things are progressing.

  411. Dear Susan and Mickey,

May God Bless Mickey as he deals with this medical issue and you as you support him through this journey. I only discovered your blog a few months ago and found I have found it helpful. I will miss your updates because we live in the Blue Ridge area of Virginia and I never tire seeing the scenery and I have even made some new discoveries in terms of hotels and restaurants to visit. Thank you to both of you. I wish you well.

  412. Susan,

Best wishes for a quick and full recovery! I had the same thing happen after my annual mammogram this year and will be having surgery next week. This is my second time after 20 years. I have done everything I could to prevent this from happening short of taking hormone blockers due to the side effects. As my doctors have told me then and now, sometimes it’s just bad luck.

Take good care of yourself and I look forward to your return!

    Connie

  413. I am so sorry that you each have received a diagnosis of cancer. I sincerely appreciate that you shared these challenges with us. I had a very similar diagnosis as yours in 2020. After a lumpectomy, radiation and an immunotherapy drug (5 year treatment plan) I am healthy and enjoying my life at 72?years old. Wishing you both full recoveries in your treatments and a healthy future.

  414. Very sorry to hear about your health issues, will be thinking about you both and sending positive thoughts your way. Take care.

  415. Susan.
So sorry to hear about your breast cancer. It is good they caught it early. The chances of a positive outcome is higher. Also I am sorry to hear about Mr. Mickey’s renal cancer. He seems like such a sweet gentleman. Prayers for both of you. Thank you for letting us know. Special care for both of you.

    Judith

  416. Praying for a quick recovery for both you and Mr. Mickey! Please keep us all updated as you feel able and thank you for encouraging all women to get their yearly mammogram. So important!

  417. Susan, I am so sorry to hear the news about both you and Mr. Mickey. Prayers that both of you will be healed and make a complete recovery. Please take all of the time off that you need to recover. But please also keep us updated when you are able to do so. We will miss you during your recovery, but we look forward to your return when you are well again. Best wishes!

  418. Susan. I am so glad you posted the information about your health issue. In April I had the same diagnosis. It’s now August 3 and I am completely done with my surgery & radiation and I will be going on some medication for the next several years to prevent possible reoccurrence. It’s so important for women to get mammograms especially if they are late 70s and 80s because as one doctor told me cancer is an old woman’s disease. Studies now show that a lumpectomy is as effective as mastectomy and much less invasive. If you’re going to be having radiation, I want to recommend a product, although it was toward the end of my radiation I discovered, that helped the itching and soreness that plain Aquaphor did not. PhysAssust Oncology Cream from Amazon.
Early diagnosis is the key. Good luck to you and Mr Mickey.

  419. DEAR SUSAN & MR MICKEY
I WILL BE PRAYING FOR HEALING AND WHOLENESS TO BE YOUR EXPERIENCES.
FATHER GIVE YOUR WISDOM TO THOSE CARING FOR THIS LOVELY COUPLE. AMEN

    BLESSINGS…JACQUI

  420. Oh Susan…I’m so sorry for the news/diagnosis that you and Mr. Mickey got. Never fun, always scary, but you are so upbeat and take such good care of yourself, and I assume Mr. Mickey too…what else can you do but deal with it.
I’m wishing much luck and love and will keep you in my prayers and look for you to “come back soon,” after beating everything, and to again share with us your wonderful blog.
Take care Susan and Mr. Mickey.

  421. Prayers for an excellent surgical and treatment outcome for both you and Mr. Mickey. Your posts are always filled with positivity, and good advice . Cheering for your rapid return
    !

  422. Even though I have followed you for quite some time, I don’t typically leave replies or comments. But, today, I do want to respond to your latest post. I am terribly sorry for the struggles you and your friend are experiencing. I am sending prayers and positive thoughts your way and hoping that you both are completely healed from this intrusive disease.

    Sending love across the miles.

    Janice Sibley
    Shreveport, LA

  428. Wishing you all the best! I am sure you and Mr. Mickey will come through your treatments with flying colors. We will miss you during your recovery,

    Julie

  429. My heart goes out to you Susan. i am a breast cancer survivor. This is a difficult time with a lot of decisions. like you my cancer was diagnosed early and i reached out to Dr William LaValley a homeopath medical doctor. When no one else could help with a decision whether or not to have my breast removed. He said right away you have no choice a mastectomy is your answer. He was right. I had a breast removed and when the results came back my margins were all clear and i did not need radiation or further treatment. That was 23 years ago. I hope this helps and i think Dr LaValley is in Arizona but at that time he had a clinic in Nova Scotia and Arizona. Take care and a speedy recovery

  430. Oh my….best wishes to you both as you undergo treatment to beat both your health issues! Your bravery in sharing is so appreciated….I’ve just put a call in to get that mammogram scheduled! Also, good advice…listen to your body….I’ve had a toothache last couple of days…thought I had just gotten food stuck under a bridge…was able to see dentist this morning, who referred me immediately to Endodontics who had more advanced equipment….turns out I have a cracked tooth with resulting infection…doctor asked if I had trouble breathing as this type of infection can lead to life threatening complications if inspection spreads to closing your throat! Fortunately I do not have a fever, and have started immediately on antibiotics, awaiting appointment with oral surgeon. So, yes, if anything is different, your body is trying to tell you something. I look forward to your future blogs with good news regarding you both!

  431. The very best to you and Mr Mickey and may you both fight this and regain your health. You have saved lives by reporting this and urging us to get those mammograms even though we might want to skip a year.
May God keep you in His hands during this time.
