Italian Influence

Last Friday, we drove to nearby Kingsport to enjoy an old-fashioned Italian lunch at Giuseppe’s. In honor of the meal, I put together a look heavily influenced by the Italian women walking the streets of Milan. It is always a treat to see how the more mature women create fascinating looks using things they’ve collected over the years blended with contemporary elements.

Those eternally stylish women certainly don’t shy away from heels, so I wore my favorite new T-strap heels here. The straps make the heels very comfortable and flattering. Later in the day, I wore them to the grocery store.

Mr. Mickey put together a comfortable all-black look featuring martini socks.

Our favorite way to unwind at the end of the day is to watch people walking on the streets of Milan here, here, here, and here.

My linear silver earrings are here. If you are like me and have a roundish fleshy face, linear earrings are slimming.

Animal print has always been popular in Milan. It is sometimes worn from head to toe. However, for me, one accessory is usually enough.

Similar jeans are here. A similar denim jacket is here. A square neck top is here. A similar animal print bag is here. A similar belt is here. (Other than the shoes, none of my items are new.)

  1. I like your new shoes and the idea of dressing like the Italian woman of Milan for your Italian dinner date. Very creative! I watched one of the video links included and was pretty impressed at how stylish most of the people were. Mr. Mickey looks dapper as always and a true example of why purchasing good quality classic clothing is worth the investment. It lasts forever and doesn’t go out of style. So glad to see you are both out and about again.

  2. Great resources. I love all things Italian and was mystified my last trip at the women my age. So much to learn!

  3. You both look great as always!
You are still rocking those heels but unfortunately I cannot wear for even a minute.
So happy to see you both loving life.
Thank you for your great posts.

  4. Love all you post. I wanted to ask where you got the blue and white flower pot and stand.. thank you

  5. You both look great, and I LOVE those martini socks that Mr. Mickey is wearing! Thank you for sharing those! 🙂

  6. The Italian women and men are Always stylish and classic! You look so young and bellissimo! Loving the black mystic Mr. Mickey gives in his ensemble! You two are an inspiration to look your best every day!

  7. I watch Milan Street fashion, too. The women and men are so stylish in Italy, even better than Paris.

  8. Hello Susan, I hope you enjoyed your Italian meal outing, you and Mr Mickey look fabulous and I always love seeing those socks. It’s good to keep a sense of humour as we age. Thank you for all the wonderful inspiring post from Judi.

  9. You both look very smart indeed , lovely fresh outfit Susan , and Mr Mickey looks more well since last post. Hey he still manages to polish his shoes I really respect that. Socks well what can I say other than he is defiantly on the mend. Your make – up is always so natural Susan and your eye make up too is soft and subtle . II loathe heavy eyeliner eyes with thick false eyelashes thick bright red lipstick and cheeks painted like a clown on older ladies, bad enough of younger women ,and heavily coloured in eyebrows , not a nice look at all.
    Take care both

  10. Susan,

Mr. Mickey is always impeccably dressed. Every now and then, could you include links to some of the items he is wearing? I would love to improve my husband’s wardrobe.

Thank you for all your tips.

    1. He will enjoy your comment, Lisa. Thank you. Most of his clothes are more than thirty years old, but his daughter recently found those plain black pants with an elastic waist at T.J.Maxx.

  11. You two are looking well! Nicely done with your choices for the outing.

I wanted to congratulate you on finding a new face care routine. I have used Clinique for years and love the gentle bar soap, moisturizer and especially the Moisture Surge Overnight Mask. It has helped me keep my skin moisturized after radiation treatments to my jaw and neck. I’m glad you found it too.

Hope you, Mr. Mickey and your families are doing well.

  12. Your look is always elegant and classy. Any ideas for flat shoes and tennis shoes. Unfortunately some of us cannot wear heels anymore

    1. Look for sleek and comfortable almond or pointed toe shoes that match the color of your legs (or pants).

  13. You two are looking FABULOUS! I too love watching the people walking in Milan. It is very relaxing at the end of the day.

  14. Wow! I always enjoy your posts, but this one was especially fun! Those video links to Milan were wonderful! Of course, Northern Italy with the sea breeze from the south and mountain air still coming in from Switzerland is considerably cooler than coastal Rockport Texas where I live! I could still enjoy a jacket right now but not in another month or two. Still, it’s always nice to have a cover up for the supercooled restaurants and stores around here.

  15. Lovely as always. My days of wearing heels for anything other than special events have passed. Do you time to put together looks for lower heeled shoes to be worn with dressy, smart casual, casual looks? Hoping to get advice from an expert.

    1. I look for sleek and comfortable almond or pointed toe shoes that match the color of my legs (or pants).

  16. Wow! You both look fantastic and I really appreciate your nod to Italian style. I love Italy and admire that most of the women there that I encountered do dress up a little more than I’m used to seeing at home.

Your lovely, timeless look is one I can replicate with pieces from my wardrobe. Thanks for the inspiration!

  17. Susan,
I love heels too. My lower back feels better with a low heel (or a block heel, which is for over an inch or two) and allows for longer inseam pants. I don’t wear completely flat shoes at all.
You both look stylish and happy.

    What a lovely day!

    1. The jacket is similar to a biker jacket, so it has loops and a belt but isn’t attached. I can wear it without the belt.

  18. Hello! I still think Mr. Mickey needs his own page. Would it be possible for you to ask him for advice? I cannot motivate my husband to wear nice things that fit him. Any ideas? He insists on wearing baggy, sloppy clothes. He gets angry when I object. Is it hopeless? Thank you!

    1. When your husband wears something that you like, let him know how nice he looks and how proud you are to be with him.

  19. You look divine as always Susan! I’m looking forward to a change in wardrobe for SPRING. Very ready for it! Take care

  20. Thank you SO much for the Milan inspiration. You certainly typify that sophisticated, elevated look. When we were in Italy a few years ago it was so obvious who the Italian women were–they were all slim, wearing high heels, and smoking. You could tell the American tourists because they mostly wore baggy clothing and sneakers. The first video (I only watched about 10 minutes of it) must have been in the winter. Loved the HATS! We need to start that trend here! You and Mickey look fabulous together. ❤️

  21. Im so happy I found ur blog again! U were such an inspiration to me, until I had a few personal problems (arthritis) that made me fall into a depression that turned on with the realization of lost dreams (depression) and the passing of time. I’m coming out of it with the help of my doctor and a change in my lifestyle, like going to the gym, socializing (new acquaintances there), and the will to lose weight and renew my wardrobe. AND HAVE BEEN NOT ONLY AN INSPIRATION, BUT A MODEL TO FOLLOW!

  22. Great however would have liked to have seen a scarf or some color separating the white from neck and face and hair. Just my thoughts but some color separating is warranted. I have heard you mention and speak to this previously so that’s why I am commenting. Cheers!
