Elevated Casual

Someone recently asked me for my take on elevated casual, so this post is for you. Even if you wear a tee and jeans, adding a blazer, nice jacket, or cardigan creates a layer to elevate it. Being well-groomed and adding accessories can also take your look to the next level. Attention to detail brings any look together.

Solid neutral colors allow endless mixing and matching and provide the perfect background for bold statement items.

I am wearing a white tee and trouser-style jeans as a base. I added silver and black-and-white details. The cropped blue tweed jacket provides color and helps give me better proportions. Tucking in the shirt and adding a belt also help give me the illusion of a waistline.

Mr. Mickey is an excellent example of how you can look sharp even when wearing thirty-year-old clothes if they are clean, pressed, and timeless in style. He always wears layers to keep warm and look more elegant and put together.

We enjoyed a lovely Saturday brunch at Hickory in the Nicewonder Farm and Vineyard.

I had a couple of inches trimmed from my hair last week, which provided a lovely lift for the approaching spring.

The cropped jacket is here. Mango tweed jackets tend to run small, so I ordered this one in a size large. The trouser-jeans were from J. Crew last year, but these are similar. The long-sleeve tee is here. The bag is here. The silver shoes are from a previous year, but these are similar. The earrings are here.

  1. Love the outfit. The blue jacket is my color, but I am afraid it would be too short on my torso. Could I again ask for a measurement (from the back neck to the waist)? Thank you

  2. You look elegant and Mr. Mickey looks handsome. A lovely picture, thank you. I’m wearing a cropped navy blazer, stripe t and nice jeans tonight myself! It looks spring-y to me and goodness knows we could use some spring!

  3. Beautiful blue jacket but I’m curious if the tweed adds bulk. I’m not as thin as you but love the look and have been shopping for a jacket to wear to my granddaughter’s graduation. I’ll be wearing navy pants and navy tank. I just need a beautiful blue jacket for my very long torso. Also, do you have any post on how to look your best in group photos of maybe 4-6 people? Seems everyone wants to scrunch together and it takes away from my look. I just want to look my best without feeling untouchable. I hope you understand.

    1. Your tank should be a bit fitted and have a lower neckline, tuck it in and wear a belt to give the best proportions. Next, add any jacket along with great accessories to finish it all off.

Try to stand in the group’s center and rest one hand on your thigh and the other on your hip, turn slightly to one side, and point one foot away from the other to create a space between them. Practice in front of a mirror until it feels natural and looks pleasing. That’s what all the stars do before hitting the red carpet. They want to show the details of their dress and their jewelry, and of course, they want to look epic, so they practice posing well before the event.

  4. Love the blue jacket. Gorgeous colour and one that looks great on me too. Though I have a long body so need a longer jacket. (I do find that shorter jackets go well with dresses but otherwise I wear ones a bit longer).

In any case, you look great. Love your hairstyle and Mr Mickey is looking great too.

  5. Blue and white is stunning on you Susan! Very crisp and springlike! You and Mr. Mickey inspire me to take a nice drive and enjoy a lovely lunch with my husband!❤

  6. Just stunning!!! You look radiant and Mr Mickey is looking quite handsome

I love your metallic belt. I’ve been looking for one for quite some time. Any recommendations where?

    Happy spring!

  7. You both look gorgeous & complement each other beautifully! I hope you’re both enjoying good health & feel as good as you look. 🙂

  8. What a nice color on you. I especially like the white with the silver belt. So springy looking. Spring is something I need right now. Another great outfit idea.

  9. You look beautiful! Mr. Mickey looks handsome & well.
Love, love the cobalt blue jacket. Went to order it – sold out! Now on waitlist if medium is returned.
Yr e-mails to me arrive several days after you post. Unsure what you can do about it. Just wish this one had arrived earlier. Might have been able to immediately purchase the jacket.
Look forward to reading about ye next adventure!

    1. It takes a few days for the emails to send because we can only send 5,000 at once. Otherwise I will get tagged as a spammer by Google.

  10. Even though I still have 1.6” of snow on the ground, you’ve sent a ray of sunshine to us all with that beautiful jacket! I want to go buy some daffodils now. Have a great weekend!

  11. You and Mr. Mickey look fabulous! Thanks for taking my question and running with it. “Elevated” sounds so much better than “dressy.” I love the cropped jacket, and would wear it, especially since I’m petite. I appreciate your comments about proportion—so important! I agree with Brad that you should/could be a model. ❤️

  12. Great advice.
What do you recommend for those of us that have worn scrubs for work and aren’t really sure what every day office work wear looks like?

  13. This outfit is perfect. And what a beautiful smile you have on these photos Susan, you are absolutely charming. Also charming and above all necessary, your superb silver high heels that I love for a total feminity.
