Spring Adjustments

If you asked for suggestions on adjusting your wardrobe for spring weather, this post is for you. On a recent sunny day, temperatures were in the seventies, so it was the perfect time to address the subject. Changes in my daily attire include fewer layers, no socks, and lighter colors.

I stopped by the office of my accountant, the bank, and the grocery store, so it was a typical day of chores. Getting dressed is always more fun when the sun shines and the air is warmer.

A lighter-colored bag and sling-back shoes without socks announce the day is warm and sunny. Sunglasses are part of my look, even on snowy days.

I wore my denim jacket as a top but might have worn it with a turtleneck or crewneck cashmere sweater on a cooler day. Socks and light-colored boots would have been my footwear option. I’m likely to wear white pants on sunny days all year round.

I can wear most of my wardrobe in three seasons except for light, floaty summer dresses and linen tops. The layers, colors, and materials I wear reflect the day’s weather.

The jacket was from Gap last year, and the skinny flare jeans were from J.Crew last year. The bag is here, shoes here, and sunglasses here.

I show you items I wore for the day and link to similar ones when mine are no longer available. Shopping links allow me to earn a small commission without extra cost to you. Posts are never ads, nor do I accept gifts from companies.

    1. My lipcolor always includes layers of different colors and products. I lined and filled in with the Lancôme lip liner in the color 132 Caprice, but it may now be discontinued. I haven’t been able to find it lately. The lip balm is also by Lancôme. It is the color #60 here.

  1. Lovely, Susan. We have 5inches of snow and no end in sight. I’m quite tired of my wardrobe by now. It’s hard to keep it fresh. But I do love when we able to switch to lighter coats, usually March.. I have several colorful ones and wear a neutral base with a colorful topper. Enjoy your lovely weather.

  2. Your outfit gives us all hope for warmer weather! Still cold in Central Indiana but wouldn’t you know it, I have been seeing some folks (men) wearing shorts.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

  3. Hello from the Pacific Northwest! I was just thinking about you and then opening my email, there you were! We are still chilly here with our highs in the low 40’s. Although, signs of spring are peaking through. My bulbs are showing life and camellias are in bloom. So I have been thinking about spring. I bought a very pretty light weight packable vest in a peony shade that will look great with jeans. You always look polished and elegant even when you’re wearing denim. I hope your family and Mr.Mickey are doing well. Wishing you an enjoyable and productive week!

  4. I always enjoy seeing a new post from you. How lucky you are to be having warmer weather. I used to live in that area and now wonder why I left for the cold of Wisconsin. Thank you for another outfit suggestion which is probably in my closet.

  5. I still have clothes from 30 years ago that I wore. Last week I found a black pullover that still had tags on it and was appropriate for a funeral. My buying clothes days are over.

  6. Down here in NZ we are currently enjoying absolutely fabulous weather, after a very cold January. It is soooo nice to look out my office window and see blue skies. There is a comment above about lipstick. I am really glad that my signature colour is one that Revlon have had forever. Number 465. I have at least half a dozen of them in different bags and pockets etc. I do hope they never go out of it. It’s a good colour to show you have lipstick on but just a bit darker than natural lip colour. I love it.

  7. Susan, I’m envious of your fair weather and the fact that you can wear white jeans without worrying about getting slush on them! Your outfit looks fresh and lovely.

Here in the Midwest, it’s so cold and snowy that we are pretty much limited to straight-leg pants and jeans that can be tucked easily into a pair of boots. Wider jeans and bootcut jeans are great and I can’t wait to wear them again — but they drag in the snow and require different, more elevated footwear that doesn’t always work in the snow. Footwear, especially for those of us who are past 50, has to be comfortable and non-skid for icy sidewalks. Long story short, it’s harder to be fashionable in wintery weather. But I will save your great tips for early spring 🙂

  8. You look wonderful and so springy. I live up here in NE Ohio and it is still cold and snowy. What kind of shoes would you wear instead of heels? I love those pointed toe heels but I could never wear them for very long. I love your blog and look forward to seeing your blogs when you post. Have an awesome week. Hi to Mr. Mickey.

    1. As long as the shoes have a slender profile and a nice light tan color you could get a similar look, even with flats.

  9. Love love this outfit! Crisp and clean -sophisticated! Nice to see your post! Hope all is well with family and Mr.Mickey too! Happy Valentine’s day!

  10. Hi Susan your simple but classic outfit is encouraging that may be Spring is on the way. Here in UK. It’s still damp and murky and the odd days the sun comes out it’s so cold . Crazy British weather !
It’s encouraging to have Spring and Summer ahead of us and I look forward to your outfits to inspire us .
Hope Mr Mickey is getting stronger and your parents to are doing well,
I must say you look a picture of health and always so pretty.
    Take care Pamela UK

  11. Can only dream of blue skies and warm air here in grey, cold UK. 3C ( approx 35F I think) driving home from the theatre tonight with sleet falling.
    It’s still 3 layer weather for a while ☹️
Love your light denim and white look — I’m desperate to wear light clothes again. And you’ve inspired me to look for lighter coloured shoes which I don’t think I’ve ever worn.

  12. We are at a windchill of minus 16° F here with plenty of snow on the ground, as well.

I don’t worry about what footwear looks best over the winter. Safe and steady shoe treads are better than casts, slings and/or crutches!

But, nothing stops one from looking their best from the ankles up!

Your previous two “looks” were spot-on perfect for our freezing temperatures and work great with sensible winter flats (shoes or boots). I have worn similar ensembles and received compliments, along with the “You’re so dressed up!” when waiting for a dental appointment or shopping for groceries. A simple thank you is my response.

I dress for my husband first (as he must look at me!), followed by dressing for myself. Casual does NOT have to be sloppy!

My daily fashion thought is: if someone arrives (unannounced) at our house, would I be fretting as to how I look?
If I suddenly needed to go into town, would I need to quickly change (other than house shoes for outdoor types)?

Happily, no fretting or fast changes around here!

I am comfortable with wearing nice ensembles, at home, for baking, reading, painting in my studio or cleaning house (aprons & gloves are just added accessories!).

I wear light cosmetics and braid my hair each day. Jewelry is for enjoying, not for hiding in boxes!

Going for a cold weather walk down our country road might call for changing clothes. But, only because of road conditions (spring slush, winter ice are a bother on nice slacks!). Hiking our property calls for less fashion, more practicality such as boots & walking staff!

Keep up your delightful fashion offerings!

  13. As always, love your outfit. I get many ideas from you. Sadly, due to serious injuries, my high heel days are past. Here in north Texas the high yesterday (Saturday) was 86 and sunny. Today the high was 47 and cloudy.
Hope Mr. Mickey is feeling better. Take care of yourself. Thanks for all you do.

  14. Susan, you always look elegant and so put together even when you are running errands. I appreciate the way you show us how we can look our best with simple pieces that will stand the test of time. The light denim jacket is the missing piece in my spring and summer wardrobe.
I can’t read your posts without saying a prayer for you and your love ones. This time in our lives is wonderful, but also brings challenges. I hope Mr. Mickey is doing well — I always enjoy seeing his themed socks.

  15. I love your outfit. I purchased that jacket last year & love it. It is still cold in Ohio but sunny today. I’m ready for Spring!

  16. Hi Susan,
I can tell there’s a spring in your step coming through from your writing! I feel the same way when it’s warm and sunny! It just makes you feel upbeat! You look refreshing too! Very nice easy outfit, and to see a denim jacket is all you needed is quite a happy sight!

  17. What facial cleansing product are you using now? I sure miss Beautycounter–just used my last drop of cleanser.
    Glad to see you again!!

  18. I’m very impressed with your styles, choices in coordinates…everything. Thank you for sharing! My, fashion fit, and garment/cut have changed by several sizes. That is a one more ambition to be changed. Oh, it is such a struggle for one who could eat whatever for years without a problem. Your lifestyle is exactly what my cardiologist recommended, no debate. I very much appreciate your generosity!
