Best Looks of 2024

Authentic personal style helps us feel more confident, empowered, and the best version of ourselves. If you’ve found your fashion groove after a few years of struggling, you know what a pleasure it is to assemble great outfits effortlessly.

Putting together a look appropriate for the event and the weather is a step in the right direction. When that look speaks volumes about your personality and helps you feel confident, you have a winner. A wild card like the jacket above can add the personal touch that makes fashion fun again.

A great outfit doesn’t necessarily involve the latest trends or all-new items. I wore a jacket I’ve had for over six years in February. Many of my favorite items have been in my collection for several years.

I’ve chosen my favorite looks for 2024 and linked each one back to the original post. The formula of a simple base, a third piece, and accessories to add pizazz served me well.

The dates under each picture are links to the original posts if you want to revisit them.

When the weather is too hot for more than one layer, I add interest to my look with accessories and creative styling. I’ve worn a white button-up shirt with dark jeans for decades, yet the combination always feels fresh—timeless pieces hold that power.

A few years ago, I learned which silhouettes flatter my shape. As I settled into my retired, more casual lifestyle, I discovered that certain pieces served me better than others. Thereafter, I only shopped for those versatile elements to create various appropriate looks. These items work with the other pieces I’ve collected over the years, allowing me to create endless, easy-to-put-together looks for any occasion or weather.

The July look includes a statement top that is about five years old paired with linen pants to create a look that is very comfortable for hot weather.

These pieces added a lot of versatility and comfort to my summer wardrobe, but I had to learn to accept wrinkles and creases inherent in wearing linen.

Choosing inspirational words to guide me through editing, purchasing, and styling was immensely helpful as I honed my wardrobe over the past three years. Elevated, effortless, and classic are the words that help me stay focused.

Choosing the best silhouette for your shape, using color to your advantage, and adding interesting accessories allows you to develop a style that works uniquely for you.

Feeling confident and comfortable with your appearance can make the day more enjoyable. If you have minimal time to get dressed, nailing it on the first try in five minutes makes the process much more pleasant. Gone are the days of trying on ten different looks before going out the door and finally wearing anything that fits because I’ve become so frustrated.

Building a wardrobe you use and enjoy improves the quality of your everyday life and saves you a lot of money. I am no longer an impulse buyer with regrets hanging in my closet. I know immediately if something I am considering will complement my shape. Anything new must work with items in my wardrobe and cannot be similar to something I already own. It must fit well, complement my shape, and be appropriate for my lifestyle to earn a place in my wardrobe.

After careful editing, the only items in my collection that wait for their turn in the limelight are those for special occasions. Everything else is in regular rotation and can be worn across three seasons. Summer heat and humidity require thin natural fabrics with minimal or no layers.

Sharing what I’ve learned about styling simple basics in neutral colors and adding a few unique pieces has given me purpose and pleasure. I hope my examples and posts have been helpful to you.

Happy New Year! May 2025 be kind to you and bring joy, success, and new friendships.

  5. Into the New Year with style and grace is my wish for myself and your readers. I have begun to hone my style so that I can always have easy outfits at hand. With your advice my wardrobe is finally getting there. For years I seemed to always be buying for special occasions instead of my everyday life which is Pacific Northwest Casual. I’ve finally caught on and have a good wardrobe for everyday. A recent move to a 55+ country club neighborhood has brought a few more changes in accessories for a more elevated look. Isn’t it great that I had Susan as a guide. May the New Year bring many blessings. Have a lovely week celebrating family and friends.

  6. I value your advice very much, Susan. Thank you for all you do for your readers. I recently ordered three of the light weight cotton/modal blend Banana Republic turtlenecks you recommended and love every one. The price was unbeatably fabulous for such quality items. Thank you for the New Year good wishes and extending you the same.

  7. As always, you provide “fresh eyes” when you combine and recombine your favorite looks. I love your blog, and always feel inspired after a visit with you.

  14. A beautiful year spent in your pleasant company Susan, always rich in elegance with all your different outfits, and of course “all in height” with your superb collection of high heel shoes always very well worn, first symbol of your total feminity. The second being your charming smile that I love so much, a real ray of sunshine.

  15. Dear Susan, thank you for all your wonderfull posts . I enjoy them always :=) I wish you a very happy and healthy year with Mr. Mickey, your family ,friends and loved ones. May the Good Lord bless you all in the next year 2025!

  16. Suggested post …… thoughts on “black tie optional – tux and gowns preferred but not required” ideas for someone who prefers to wear flowy pants or the like vs dresses and bride did give blessings for all black outfit too. Needing ideas for taking something to the next level and I love your style. This is our besties daughters wedding and we will be helping with transporting items/final set up touches and might not have opportunity to change either

  17. Thank you so much for your articles. I feel like I have taken a course in fashion and my mental health is better for it . Happy New Year!

  20. I appreciate your guidance very much. I understand the principles; yet I struggle to stay on task still. I’m overwhelmed with packing for our cruises I love how you’ve embraced the turn to wider legged trousers. I can’t imagine any figure challenges you face because you look slim, fresh and lovely always. I’ll continue to work on this as it makes a very big difference as to the rest of my mood. Wishing you and your loved ones health and happiness in the New Year.

  21. Happy New Year, Susan! Thank you for your fashion and life recommendations. I look forward to receiving your emails. You inspire so many of us! May the Lord bless you!

  22. Susan, you are the only blogger I follow whom I feel looks good in the wide leg pants! As this post shows, you mostly wear black or denim in the wide leg style, use the column of color concept, and wear high heels/platform shoes to offset the width of the pant legs. Anything else I forgot? Perhaps in 2025 I’ll break out of straight leg slacks/jeans and give the wider leg style a go! Happy, healthy new year wishes to you and your loved ones.

    1. My best tip for wearing wide or flare leg pants and jeans is to pair them with a shorter more fitted jacket or top. It also helps to tuck in your top and define the waist with a belt.

  23. I love every single look! Well done! Have a wonderful NewYear!
Thank you for sharing and giving me such sound advice and tons of inspiration.

  24. I echo DonnaZ…. I wish you lived next door or were available for hire to help me with my closet and when and what to declutter. Heavy sigh….. I will have to settle for these much appreciated posts .
All the best for a safe, healthy and Happy New Year.
    Be well

    Happy New Year!

  28. Well, this was a delight! You look absolutely wonderful in everything you’ve shared with us this year. I just snagged several of those great cotton turtlenecks and tees from BR by following your link from a previous post.

I’m so glad all those to whom you have given so much comfort and care this year are doing better. Wishing you and Mr. Mickey love, happiness and health, in 2025!

  29. I only found you about a year ago, but look at many of your posts over this time. I so appreciate your photos and the descriptions of how you have found your style and stick with it. I turned 73 in October, and because of your posts, I feel very confident in what select to wear each day. I am working on decluttering my closet and trying to pare down my wardrobe. I know someone somewhere will enjoy wearing the clothes I donate. I hope you have a fabulous 2025 and that Mr. Mickey continues to improve daily.

  30. Susan,
It’s always pleasant a pleasant day when I see your post!
I appreciate all you have passed along to your followers.
Wishing you and your’s the best New Year!

  31. Happy New Year Susan! Love your best looks of 2024 post. You are always inspiring! I have been following you for many years now and notice that you used to wear more jewel tones. (I always loved you in the royal blue colours). I am curious if you have decided to transition away from brighter colours and if so why?

  32. Happy New Year Susan! I also have been following your blog for years. Being 80 years young I don’t have many events to attend but enjoy going out to eat. I’m only 5 feet tall, my hair is gray (some white on top)my eyes are blue/green. I try to wear same color top and bottom to appear taller. Neutral colors seem to wash me out . Have you ever written about skin tone , warm or cool color skin and what colors you should wear to compliment our skin? Also how do you know what skin tone we have.

  33. Thank you, Susan, for all that you generously share with us. In particular this year I have improved my eating habits- thanks to your example and healthy food/ book recommendations.

  34. Your advice is wonderful and I thank you for taking the time to share it. Wishing you, Mr. Mickey and all your family a healthy and happy New Year!

  35. Susan, thank you so much for sharing your wardrobe styles and giving me confidence in my selections. I have lost weight over the last few years due to life changes due to my health. I have donated my wardrobe that no longer fits and have only basics that compliment my shape. I am enjoying the freedom of less purchases. Thank you so very much.

  36. You have been such an inspiration to me, and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and research. You truly have figured out what works for you, and you look polished and attractive with ease. Wishing good health and much happiness to you and Mr. Mickey in the coming years!

  38. Thank you Susan for being such an inspiration by sharing your wealth of knowledge. I love reading your blog no matter how late to the party I am. Wishing you and yours a very healthy and happy 2025!

  39. Wishing you a safe and effortless passage through 2025. Thank you for all your posts. I wish I could import you into my life to sort out my wardrobe.

  40. Happy New Year! Thank you for sharing these best looks. As I look back on them they do remind me of some great outfit suggestions. I have used many of these as a guide and have even purchased some of the items you suggested. As I write this I am wearing my one of your Banana Republic sweaters. I like your practical classic look and I do use it a lot. You have made getting dressed much easier and I save money not buying things I probably would not wear.
I’m looking forward to seeing more in the new year.

  41. Your combination of basic pieces is timeless and always look classy and classic. You are an inspiration. Thanks for your graciousness and grace.

  42. Just a delightful yearly wrap-up Susan. When assembling an outfit, I often ask myself, “What would Susan do?”. Warm colors are the most flattering on me, so I finally devised my own formula: when you show black, navy or white neutrals in jackets and tops, I look for similar pieces in camel, cream, brown or olive. Works like a charm!
I wish a happy and healthy New Year to you, the incomparable Mr. Mickey and your family. Like you, I lovingly cared for my beloved mother and now we are helping my 97-year/old mother-in-law. It’s a privilege.

  43. Happy New Year to you, Susan. Thank you for a year filled with beautiful outfits and sound, caring advice. I admire the way you live every chapter of your life to the fullest and unselfishly care for others. Is there a link that shows just photos of this year’s outfits so we can download it and quickly reference dressing ideas?

    1. I haven’t created an outfits link for the whole year, but you can save the images you like on Pinterest to a private board for easy reference.

  44. I do think your outfits are very classy and chic…except for the huge baggy pants in some photos that also seem to add several sizes to your overall look. They don’t seem to fit th at well at the top and look so uncomfortable with such huge wide legs. It’s this just a preference or an actual trend going around? Can a short person pull these off or are they best left to the taller girls.

    1. After so many years of skinny jeans, tailored and full-leg pants may seem baggy. The pants I am wearing are fitted at the waist and then flare at the hem. None of my pants are baggy or wide-leg; they just aren’t slim-fitting. A petite woman can wear anything if she keeps proportion in mind. A slim-fitting, shorter top or jacket with full-length flare-leg pants looks elegant and modern.

  45. Thank you so much for all your work . May the new year bring you joy, much love from Australia to you and the incredibly elegant mr. Mickey

  46. Hi Susan
I have been following your suggestions for several years now and became interested in the pants that you wear. I did not wear jeans (and particularly wide legs). However, I thought they really looked great on you! Then I thought well maybe they are a temporary fad. In a visit to White House Black Market, I happened to get in on a very good sale, so I tried on a pair of high-rise wide-leg jeans. Whoa! I loved them–the length, the fit –perfect! So soft and what a perfect fit. I am 5 ft 9 inches (size 12 or 14) and going on 90 years old! The length was perfect. I walked out with three pairs. I absolutely love them. One pair has imitation diamonds along the pockets in front. I thought I would remove them, but then I decided not to. I wore them to a meeting with friends. They loved them!!! Do not touch the “diamonds” they said. So I did not. All three are fun to wear. And to think I got them on sale!!!

Thank you for your suggestions Susan! I think that we are never too old for fashionable clothes. And it is fun!

Nancy in Illinois–it is cold here!

  47. I look forward to your newsletters so much & I loved the year-end post! I too ordered three of the Banana Republic turtlenecks and am so happy with all of them. Thank you!
I was a caregiver for my parents & mother-in-law. It is an often demanding but rewarding calling. It sounds like you are embracing the experience with your typical grace & aplomb.
Looking forward to your future posts and wishing you & your loved ones a healthy & blessed 2025.

  48. Thank you for all you do! I love your style-it’s what i try to follow. You are an inspiration to all of us and I hope you never stop. I hope you; your parents and Mr. Mickey have a wonderful year. I’ve signed back up numerous times but still I’m not back on your list to receive your emails. Thank you.

    1. I apologize for the problem, Carol. It is my ISP that is refusing to deliver emails to Hotmail accounts. I hope the problem will be resolved soon. We are working on it.

  49. Thank you again for getting my easily distracted mind back on track. I need reminding often about solids and basics. You are truly inspiring as I work to lose weight and look my best.

  50. Love all your outfits for each month you always look so elegant. Thank you for giving me such great style ideas. Hope 2025 will be a healthy happy one
