A New Scarf

While visiting family for my aunt’s 90th birthday dinner, I spent a couple of days in Charlotte, NC. SouthPark Mall and the surrounding neighborhood offer unique upscale shopping and dining options. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Phillips Place and Speciality Shops SouthPark, outdoor shopping complexes nearby.

When I show an outfit including a scarf, it is always a few years old, so I’m happy to share a new scarf today. When I saw it in the Rag and Bone store at Phillips Place, it was the item that most resonated with me. I knew without hesitation that I would enjoy wearing it for many years.

The geometric print and the supple hand of the fabric are precisely what I look for in a scarf. The 55-inch-square scarf is 77% modal and 23% silk. I bought it here, but it is also here.

Our morning temperatures were frosty but warmed up to the low sixties when I wore this look to shop for groceries to deliver to my parents. Later, Mr. Mickey had a doctor’s appointment, so the look was both comfortable and appropriate for the day. I am wearing the sweater in a size medium, and it is here. The sculpted pants are here in wide-leg, here in straight-leg, and here in bootcut. This time, I ordered the straight-leg pants in petite 8 to wear with flats and low heels. The shoes are here. The bag and belt are no longer available, but I bought them here.

Large square scarves have always been a favorite accessory since they add warmth and finesse to an otherwise plain combination.

My favorite way to wear large scarves is to fold the square into a triangle and place it around my shoulders. I pull one end to about mid-hip and toss the longer end over my other shoulder. Wearing scarves should be effortless and casual, so I don’t try to anchor them in place. A drape or tie is always done nonchalantly with the knowledge that it will move with me during the day.

The scarf is here.

  1. Great to see you back posting. Never tire of Navy and white – it is a classic.
Hope you enjoyed your Aunt’s 90th birthday celebration and yr visit to Charlotte!

  2. Beautiful scarf! Yesterday I wore a navy silk scarf that I purchased from the scarves you had for sale years ago. Still love it and still receive compliments when I wear it!

  3. When I traveled to Munich, I saw a scarf that was pricey, but beautiful. I didn’t get it because the woman I was traveling with commented on the “outrageous” price. I’ve always regretted it.

  4. Fabulous scarf! Looking forward to see you style in other ways.

Happy belated Birthday to your aunt!

The peace lily in the beautiful blue and white cachepot is beautiful. Do you use anything on the leaves to get that shine?

    1. Yes, the sweater is true to size. My usual size is a medium and that’s what I’m wearing in the photo.

  5. Nice to see you back! What a beautiful scarf and I’m sure with those colors you will be wearing it a lot.

  6. Your scarf is lovely. I live about 40 minutes south of South Park. It is a beautiful area and mall.

  7. Susan your scarf looks elegant which reflects you! I always end up looking awkward when I do the same! But I’ll keep trying! Thank you for the inspiration x

  8. You are always dressed in such an elegant classy way.
Loved the looks you had here especially with the scarf!
    The trousers are wonderful.

  9. You look well and rested after your Spring break . I know you and Mr Mickey like Italian people watching but this
look is definitely French Riviera! You look so smart and chic yet not overdone.
Your navy scarf is beautiful and you have draped it so cleverly, I love it. Navy and white is Spring / Summer colours
for me and greys and black for winter. Hey who wants to talk about winter ! Spring has finally arrived in Uk it’s been lovely,.
    Take care both x

  10. Once again Susan, you truly have an irresistible charm through this chic outfit and your magnificent smile that I love so much. Always in the greatest simplicity, I am seduced by so much feminity. And of course, these perfect low slingback heels to sign your very personal style.

  11. Welcome back! You’ve been missed! So glad you had the opportunity to get away for some R&R as well as celebrate your aunt’s 90th birthday. Wow, what a milestone. The new scarf is really beautiful and the whole outfit is classy. I love the hint of green in it as well.

On another note, I missed wishing you and Mr. Mickey a Happy Anniversary! Mr. Mickey’s double breasted blazer was so “snazzy!” (Do we even say that anymore?) Your outfit, along with your new necklace, was stunning. Congratulations!

  12. The scarf is lovely. I really enjoy your posts because your style resonates with me. I’m retired now and I miss dressing up for work.

    1. No, they are just tailored pants, not really wide-leg even though the description states that. The pant legs are nine inches wide at the thigh. They also have the same style in a boot-cut here and the straight pant here. I have all three styles!

  13. I took note of the petite size you chose for the trouser purchase and wondered if you’d consider doing a post on the size differences between “regular” and “petite” sizes in pants? I’m typically a regular size 8 and, mostly buy online. I suspect I could fit into a petite for some fashions but am always hesitant to make that purchase. The scarf is gorgeous! Such an easy, eye catching accent piece.

    1. In some cases, petite simply means the inseam length is shorter. If they are truly sized for petite ladies the crotch to waist measurement will also be shorter. I need a 29 to 30 inch inseam with flats and low heels, but when I want to wear high heels I prefer a 33 inch inseam.

  14. Susan:
I’m happy to hear you enjoyed your time in CLT. I live north in Davidson and have never been to Rag and Bone. Thanks for the tip on a new shopping destination. When you return to this area, check out MINE by sandy in Davidson. It’s a fabulous boutique that you would also enjoy.

  15. Beautiful scarf, I love Rag & Bone. I have admired those shoes since you first posted them, and last week I snagged a pair in Modern Ivory from Nordstrom Rack. Haven’t worn them yet, we’re back to cool and rainy weather. The Rack has several other colors available that would be good for spring and summer.

  16. This is a beautiful scarf, one worth investing in. No doubt you’ll get many years of wear from it because it is such a classic.

Your aunt is 90, and your parents are in their 90s. Whichever of your parents she is related to, it seems longevity runs in the family!

You look so amazing, that I have to think “young genes” run in the family too.

Glad Mr. Mickey is doing well.

    1. Aunt Sue is my mother’s sister, but we have longevity on both sides. Mother’s great-aunt lived to be 107.

  17. Love this look with the scarf. I couldn’t copy and paste the first picture. I would like to include it in my “”Susan’s”album as
this is a look I can wear.
So glad you were able to see and enjoy your aunt’s birthday as well as sneak in a few moments to go shopping as well. So satisfying when you actually find something you like and can use for a long time.
Glad you are back online and posting. You were missed.
    Sincerely,
    Clara from Iowa

  18. Susan,

So happy to read your recent post; you were missed! Glad to hear you had a nice time spent with family and friends and that Mr. Mickey is well and happy.

I’d like some tips for petite ladies (70+) who wear flat shoes with orthotics! Flats are a must after hip and knee replacements along with arthritis in my feet. I wear sneakers at home or when running errands, but I would like to look more stylish when getting dressed up!

Wish you would gather your tips into a book! Wishing you a beautiful Easter/Spring filled with hope, love, and endless joy and perhaps and some dark chocolate!

    1. I’ll share a tip I’ve learned from some of my friends who also have to wear specific shoes for their foot problems. Buy comfortable shoes, but look for a slim style with almond-shaped toes. Match the color to your pants or your legs. For example, black pants with black shoes. Nude or tan shoes with dresses, skirts, or light-colored pants. Some shoes come with removable footbeds that allow you to add your orthotics instead.

  19. I did not realize I might have the option of petite pants for flats and low heels. I’m constantly cutting off hems and fussing because I’m not exactly sure where they should land. I think I need a more detailed way to be able to put a rubber band around my ankle or something because I have no one to help me. It’s frustrating and I’ve ended up redoing some.
I have bought petite tops occasionally to get a shorter length. As I’m not a big busted woman. My shape well I’m not sure. I’d pbly guess more athletic.
I enjoy your looks. I’ve just turned 70. I enjoy Church, crafts and going places with my husband mostly so I don’t hav3 time to be fussy but I like to be turned out nicely. You perfect that. Thanks for all the advice.

  20. The scarf is lovely on you! Me; not so much…and the price! That’s a no!
I love seeing how you style things; taking a simple outfit and elevating it so simply like this.
Always appreciate your posts whether they’re for me or not.

  21. I’ve been a fan of your blog for years; really enjoy it! Few criticisms but one I will note: many readers don’t have ready access to the variety of stores you have ( I live in a community of 13,000 and nearest large shopping area is 3 hours each way. I would appreciate some other online options for items such as scarves and basics. I usually can find duplicates or very similar imported scarves from Ebay for under $50.

    1. Since the nearest decent shopping area is also three hours away for me, I shop almost exclusively on line. I always give you a link to the same or a similar item. Look for the blue links in the text of my articles. I will usually put them in the word here. Click on that and you will be taken to that site and that item. Thanks for following my blog.

  22. Gee, the shopping centres are beautiful Susan.
I’m pretty sure you could spend a whole day in them very happily

  23. I am so impressed with your joy of life and positive attitude. You seem to make the most of every day regardless of circumstances. Do you have any tips to offer that involve finding joy in difficult times?

    1. Thank you, Marylou. When I feel overwhelmed, sad, or worried, I turn off the news and go for a long walk in nature.
