Sometimes, I find things that are so good I can’t wait to share them with you. If you also dislike being cold, you will love this turtleneck as a cozy first layer. I bought a few colors, and I’ve worn them with sweatshirts when I walk, under button-up shirts, with blazers, cardigans, and vests. You could even wear one under your pajamas since the neck is not tight.
These turtleneck shirts are soft and comfortable as a tee, but the high neckline is way warmer. I wore one today with a wool jacket to run a few quick errands and take Mr. Mickey to an appointment afterward. I am wearing a size medium.
My jeans are a couple of years old. Similar jeans are here. The Dooney & Bourke bag is about five years old. The Sam Edelman boots are also several years old. These boots are similar. The double-faced wool jacket is here.
The turtleneck top is available in seven colors at a great price here. It comprises 58% cotton, 38% modal, and 4% elastane spandex. Machine wash and tumble dry.
Another challenge that cold weather has always brought is chapped lips. This year, I discovered Carmex, and the problem is solved. I won’t be without it!
Mr. Mickey continues to improve, and he asked me to thank you for your kind comments and prayers.

May I ask what size in the turtleneck you wear? I used to be able to judge my size from that, but honestly, your bustline seems so much smaller than a few years back. (Not trying to be rude here; just girl talk).
My prayers will continue for you both. It is hard to have a loved one having health issues. You both are fortunate to have each other. The turtlenecks look attractive and the price right now is outstanding! It is so refreshing to read your blog. I can see you actually are wearing the clothes you show us and not just encouraging us to buy things that will rarely look good and drain the budget. I checked my calendar and Christmas has suddenly appeared to be way too close! I’d better wrap things up soon. A Merry Christmas to you, Mr. Mickey and your family!
Love the pop of the red turtleneck. Also just finished reading What the Mountains Remember by Joy Calloway. It was mentioned on this blog either by you or in comments. Really enjoyed it and learning about the Grove Park Inn area. Thanks!
Hello Susan,
Can you tell me if you ordered the jeans in petite or regular? I am 5’3 and have a hard time getting the correct length. Hope you and Mr. Mickey have a wonderful holiday season.
I am 5’5″ so I ordered the regular. I need a 32″ inseam if I will be wearing the pants or jeans with heels. When you know the inseam length that you like to wear with heels or flats it will make it easier to order pants and jeans without the need to alter them.
Hi Susan your turtleneck top is a excellent idea . I’ve had some as well when I was working also had few with a short sleeve. As I am inclined to push my sleeves up so it worked well for me with a three quarter sleeve jacket.
However our winters in the region where i live in South Africa are not very cold in winter.
I’m so pleased Mr Mickey is doing well. May he continue to get better.
Look after yourself Susan.
God Bless.
Hi Susan! Happy to hear Mr. Mickey iS doing well. Best wishes for the holiday season. Wondering if you would provide a link to the post(s) you detail how to use oils instead of moisturizer during winter. Tried to find them without success, thanks
Mr. Mickey is still on my prayer list for a full and complete recovery, as well as your mom.
You styled the turtleneck in a chic way and the red looks fabulous on you. I can’t think of a time when I did not have turtleneck or mock turtlenecks shirts in my closet. They are a good layer for cold weather. Glad you discovered Carmex! My girls used that when they were in high school back in the late ’80’s and mid-90’s. It is a product that has stood the test of time.
Love the turtle neck, especially the neck not so tight, it looks great on you! They seem to wash well too. So happy Mr. Mickey is on the mend! He puts a smile on my face! Many best wishes to you both!❤
Thank you for the wonderful tips, Susan — they’re all fantastic! I will keep you and Mr. Mickey in my prayers.
I truly enjoy your posts! You have helped me understand which fashion styles suit me best, and they have significantly boosted my confidence. Bless you!
Thank you for these tips. I ordered a few of these. Great price and quality. Looking forward to receiving them. My husband just had aortic valve replacement. It’ll be great to use this tip to get ready quick and warm!
Praying Mr Mickey continues to improve.
Merry Christmas!
Molly
I am happy to learn that Mr. Mickey is doing well. Recovery takes longer as we age. You slways look beautiful and your choice of outfits are impeccable.
Thank you for taking care of Mr. Mickey! Merry Christmas!
Susan,
So glad to hear Mr. Mickey is on the upswing. You are my North Star with food selections. Can you tell me if you ever use any nut or non dairy milks ( like almond milk, oat milk or soy milk )? Also do you drink your coffee black or do you use any of the flavored coffees ?….and lastly, do you now steer clear of oatmeal, muesli and porridges ?
Thanks. Best wishes for a happy holiday season.
I’m so glad he’s doing g better. Getting old isnt for cissies, that for sure. I fell and broke my ankle. Life can change in a second!
Thank you for all the wonderful clothing advice.
Glad to see you recommending Carmex. My son, who plays the trumpet and must keep his lips in good condition, introduced me to Carmex years ago. It’s been my go-to lip balm ever since.
Thank you so much for the heads up on this terrific bargain! My outfit selection is so easy now that I’ve been following you and adding basics and solid colors and I get so many more compliments than before!
I hope you have a wonderful peaceful Christmas with loved ones and a healthy and happy new year!
Susan,
Your layering tips came in handy yesterday. It was “Wreaths Across America” day and we helped put wreaths on graves to honor veterans. Temps in the low 30s and windy… I was ready and layered.
Happy to hear you and Mr. Mickey are home together. You look lovely as always.
Merry Christmas!
I have subscribed to your blog for a long time but am no longer receiving your posts. I have no clue why. I tried to first a link where I could re-subscribe but can find no link to do so.
Hey Susan I have bought 3 colours of the turtle neck tops, white, light grey and black about 2weeks ago . I never thought of one in red it look ps great on you. I might get a red one and navy one too. They wash beautifully.
Soooo glad Mr Micky out of hospital , take things gently with run up to Christmas when you can. It’s a hectic time of year at the best of times, but sometimes a quiet Christmas can be the best .
I am waiting on appointment for my first mammogram after Lumpectomy this time last year, must admit I do feel
a bit anxious but hopefully it will be OK . All these these challenges in life are part of our journey and sometimes test us to the limit.
Hope we hear from you before Christmas even if it a tiny post .Take care Susan and Mr Mickey , get those festive socks on lol. that goes for you too Susan ? Mistletoe socks , now that would be FUN . I will leave it to yours and Mr Mickeys imagination. Please don’t injure yourselves lol xx

Susan, Thank you for tip on those turtle necks! Terrific price & I like Banana Republic’s quality. I live in turtlenecks in the winter as a base layer, but lately have been bugged by constricting necks! So ordered 5 in the basic colors! May you and Mr. Mickey have a lovely holiday & may the New Year bring good health to your whole family!
I followed your lead and bought some of the turtlenecks! You look darling in the red one! Thanks Susan! Merry Christmas to you and Mickey and your families, I hope it’s wonderful for you!

This was the perfect post for me today! On Friday, I dithered until almost time to walk out the door about what I was wearing to a luncheon. It’s not that I “had nothing to wear,” it’s that I had too many choices. Just seeing this great outfit on you helped me think through my Friday dithering. I’m happiest when I’m wearing my “uniform” which looks remarkably similar to what you are wearing, and I can dress it up or down depending on the occasion. Always good to be reminded to stay authentically me. Thank you.
It was lovely to hear that Mr. M continues to improve.
Good morning Susan, I missed what Mr. Mickey is recovering from, but will keep him in my prayers. Regarding the turtleneck, is it tight to your neck? I love the warmth of that layer, but fear it might make my slight double chin look worse or feel too snug.
Hope Mr. Mickey continues to heal and improve every day!
Thank you for this email too! I have been looking for a turtleneck and they are a bit scarce here in Florida! Imagine that! I ordered three! Great deal!
Blessings to you both at Christmas and all year long!
Sounds like Mr Mickey is home now. That’s good.
I wish I would have seen this sooner I need some turtlenecks for warmth. The price is right I may have to order some. I really like the looser neck. What a nice red on you!
I always wore/loved turtlenecks but now, I find, that my neck is getting shorter???!!! I feel turtlenecks look like their choking me; oh how I wish I could wear them again as they are great under blazers/cardigans/blouses. Darn!
May I ask what size in the turtleneck you wear? I used to be able to judge my size from that, but honestly, your bustline seems so much smaller than a few years back. (Not trying to be rude here; just girl talk).
So glad Mr. Mickey is doing better.
I am wearing a size medium. You are correct. I’ve lost a few pounds in the past year, so my bust is smaller.
So happy to hear that Mr.Mickey is doing better! I’m sure that’s a huge relief. I hope your mother is doing well and past her radiation treatments.
Super buys at Banana Republic! Thank you for posting; the weather here has been in the 20’s and these will arrive by Christmas Eve!
Hi Susan! I just ordered 3 of the turtlenecks! Thanks for the suggestion.
Merry Christmas to you and Mr. Mickey!!

Try using olive oil after your bath. Let it sink while you dry your hair.

I apologize for the problem, Linda. My ISP has been blocking Hotmail emails for a while. I have ordered a new ISP, but they still need to install it.
These tops are $10.50 each on the BR website today, plus and additional 20% off. I bought 5!

I had the same concern, so I was happy to find that the neck isn’t too tight at all.
