Solo Travels Part 3

If you use formulas to create outfits, you already know how much time and money the practice saves. My go-to formula for steamy summer days includes linen or cotton loose-fitting pants, a camisole or tank, and a light, floaty linen shirt left open with the sleeves turned up. I wore this combo many times during my trip, and it served me well since I could remove or add the overshirt as needed.

I used the formula on Sunday for church.

This look includes a camisole that is at least five years old and lightweight white pants that are about three years old. The blue oversized linen gauze shirt is here. It serves the purpose so well that I also bought the white one. The wedge sandals are here.

The sunglasses are here, the clutch is here, and those are the same silver rattan earrings from the previous post. The earrings are here. Use the code SAS10 to get $10 off your Beauty in Stone Jewelry purchase.

I packed the following clothing and shoes for my trip: Two pairs of white jeans, two linen tees (white and black), two cotton tanks (white and black), a black jumpsuit, a white linen dress, a white linen blend skirt, and a black one, a black button-up vest, four linen button-up shirts (white, black, red, and blue), three pairs of tan sandals, and two swimsuits. I also took a basic denim jacket for early morning walks on the beach. Almost all the pieces could be layered or mixed and matched to create enough unique looks to last throughout the week.

I wore all the pieces I brought at least once and didn’t repeat any combination. Accessories such as hats, shoes, belts, and jewelry can always change the look of your pieces. I didn’t bring black shoes or bags because dark leather looks too heavy in the heat.

The formula also works when you substitute the pants for a linen skirt. I wore this look when I visited Somerset Place. Earlier in the day, while still in Edenton, I wore a black linen shirt over the look when I entered the sanctuaries of the churches open for tours. It also came in handy when I had lunch at Darrell’s in Manteo later in the day.

Since it was so hot and humid when I walked around the plantation grounds, I left the black linen shirt in the car. The tank is here, and the linen skirt is here.

Originally, the Somerset Place plantation included more than 100,000 densely wooded, mainly swampy acres bordering the five-by-eight-mile Lake Phelps in present-day Washington County. The site is a little more than twenty-eight miles from Edenton.

The restored and furnished buildings provide a realistic view of 19th-century life on the large North Carolina plantation.

After lunch, it was still too early to check into my hotel in Kill Devil Hills, so I drove to Duck to shop in my favorite coffee and book store, Duck’s Cottage & Downtown Books. I purchased a delightful White Swan iced coffee, note cards, and the book “The Sicilian Inheritance” by Jo Piazza. I walked on the boardwalk in Duck for a while, sipping my iced coffee, then headed south to check into my hotel.

The photo above was an attempt to capture the sunrise. However, a storm was brewing to the south, so there were too many clouds. Later in the day, it was clear and beautiful. As I was enjoying the view below with a glass of wine on the open deck at Beachcombers, more than a hundred dolphins passed very close to the shore. It was such a thrill to see so many of the majestic animals.

I spent only one full day at the beach but made the most of it by walking more than ten miles in the surf. During the heat of the day, I took a break to enjoy lunch at Mulligan’s Grille in Historic Cottage Row. Too soon, it was time to pack the car again and leave for the last night of my trip.

While in Charlotte, I stayed at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel here. The hotel is next to SouthPark Mall, many other upscale shopping centers, and excellent restaurants.

I took the photos above and below from the balcony in my room.

The purpose of my stay in Charlotte was to visit Nordstrom at the SouthPark Mall. I needed some products since Beautycounter will not be available again until later this year. Lancôme was the skincare I used for decades, so I have returned to that line. I purchased a Cleanser, Eye Makeup Remover, Daytime Moisturizer, Serum 1 and Serum 2, Lip Balm #57, and mascara (not pictured).

I also visited Soma for the pale sand and black balconette bras here. I wear cotton and linen button-up shirts with these bras because they offer cool support without padding. I window-shopped and enjoyed watching people, but I didn’t need anything else, so that was the extent of my shopping.

I hope this series of posts encourages you to travel, shop, dine, explore, and enjoy your life for as long as possible. Shopping links may allow me to earn a small commission without any cost to you.

  1. I enjoy these “traveling solo” posts, they are a great encouragement to live life fully and to enjoy our own beautiful country, thank you!

    Love your packing examples!

Do you plan out which restaurants to visit before you leave home?

    1. Eating is never a priority for me, so I do not. Since I usually only have some yogurt and fruit in the morning and then lunch, I google restaurants that are open now in my area and read a few reviews before deciding where to go.

  2. I love the blue tunic, Susan. Do you mind sharing what size you are wearing. I am 5’8” and weigh 158. The shirt says it is oversized so I don’t know about a medium or a large..
Thanks for the trip posts, they have been a delight to read!

    1. I am wearing a size medium. Anytime the description states “oversized,” I get a medium. If I fear it might pull across the chest area, I size up to a large.

I’m glad you’ve enjoyed reading about my little get-away.

  3. Thank you for the update on your makeup routine. I’ve been trying to decide what to do without Beauty Counter. I’ll give Lancôme a try.

  4. What a nice little trip. It really looks like a nice area. I really like your packing ideas. I always take way too much. One question I have about the Lancôme products. How long will they last? Some are a bit pricey but I did use Beautycounter and am willing to try Lancôme. Probably just a cleaners and moisturizer I’m not very good with a lot on my face but am willing to give a serum a try. What would you suggest? I have normal skin.

    1. The Lancôme products are high quality so I only use a tiny amount. I don’t have to replace most products for more than eight months. All the products I showed are great for mature normal to dry skin. The Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate Anti-Aging Face Serum is wonderful. I used that one for many years and loved how healthy it makes my skin look.

  5. Beautiful photos! I enjoy your travels and I travel vicariously through you! Please don’t take this wrong, but I loved your hair when it was much shorter. Your length tends to drag down your beautiful face and features..

Many you enjoy many, many more trips!

    Mary

  6. Your solo trips are fantastic all the places you visit look so calm and peaceful. I just love to do the travels with you. My husband and I are going to visit our daughter in New Zealand soon. So I have been taking note of your packing tips. We will be there for two months in the summer time. The mix and match ideas have given great inspiration for our trip.
    Thank you Susan.
    God Bless

  7. I loved this 3 part post series! I am single (widowed) and have started doing little trips like this for a day or two and I love them too. I am so encouraged by your travels and love the wardrobe ideas. Thanks again.

  8. Susan,
Thank you for sharing your currennt skincare. Are you using Lancome makeup as well? If so.please share your beauty routine.

    Thank you, Kelly

  9. I love these posts. Your style is so classic and elegant.
Also, I think your hair is fabulous! The length is very becoming. You are a beautiful woman and can wear any hair style.

  10. Love these travel posts and am glad to see you traveling alone. My daughter bought me the Lancôme Christmas gift set and all these products were in it. I loved them; when my Estée Lauder stash wears out, I am moving to Lancôme.

  11. It’s wonderful to see you enjoying a vacation in eastern NC. There are so many picturesque towns. Your outfits always look casually chic and easy to copy. You might consider New Bern around Christmas time. They may still do Christmas at the Governor’s Palace, have wonderful B and Bs, trolley tour and a lovely Christmas Market. The local restaurants are great. Thank you for this three part series!

  12. I really enjoy reading about your travels and seeing your photos, especially as your area of the US isnt promoted as a holiday destination down in New Zealand and I know so little about it. I know now that your towns, historic places, parks and countryside are very beautiful and I would love to visit now that I am retiring from my job

  13. I love these solo travel posts! Looks so relaxing and peaceful and fun. Outfits on point too. My anxiety has gotten so bad since menopause that I’m not traveling by myself anymore, I used to though. So it’s inspiring to see your pictures. Also funny thing regarding hair, before I read comments here I was thinking how healthy and youthful your hair looks at this lenght! I love it.

  14. Always look forward to your posts. Like your Lancome recommendations as Beauty Counter is not available in UK. Which shade of lip balm did you choose please? Thanks.

  15. I love these travel posts. Very inspiring for places to visit. And you look lovely as always. You mention so many linen pieces. I love linen as well but how do you manage the wrinkles that linen inevitably gets while traveling. I can typically get one one wearing from my pure linen items even at home . Thanks

    1. There is often an iron and a board in my room. At the end of the day I can steam or iron the garment and leave it hanging to air out. If there is no iron, I leave the garment hanging near my shower and the steam often releases some creases. Otherwise, I just live with the wrinkles.

  16. Looks like a wonderful trip – thank you for sharing .
I have never been to coastal NC. Would you recommend anywhere specific to go for a first time visitor?

    1. Edenton isn’t right on the coast, but it is a lovely little town. Duck is also a fun place to walk around. The Outer Banks during summer is very busy with lots of traffic and people, but I enjoyed my stay last spring at Buxton and Hatteress Island very much.
If you Google what you are interested in and the town or area you will get results that might help you decide where to travel. For example – Historic towns Coastal NC. Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, Nags Head, New Bern, Edenton, Wrightsville Beach, and Southport all sound very interesting.

  17. I still love my shapeez long line bras! Do you continue to wear them? I don’t wear them in extreme heat, but do like the smoothness they give to my outfits! You have been a plethora of inspiration for me throughout the years. I appreciate all your time putting together your blog! All the best❤

  18. Your last three posts have motivated me to get out and see the world around me -I’m in Cincinnati. For too long I’ve been trying to figure out who to travel with when really, I could go alone! I’m planning my first trip to Lake Erie for September.
I have foot and back problems so generally wear walking shoes whenever I’m spending time on my feet. I notice you don’t seem to wear tennis shoes when exploring but if you do, could you recommend something that looks nice but has good support and comfort?

  19. Susan, I don’t think I could enjoy your commentary more than I do–you are so encouraging and curious. The whole world is out there waiting to be explored. THANK YOU!

  20. Looks like a wonderful trip and great weather! Do you think Loreal products are comparable to Lancome? Just trying to save some cash $$ Thanks!

  21. As always thanks for sharing Susan , your vacation has been very interesting. It’s kind of you to explain some of the history of those lovely buildings.
The photo of you in the beautiful blue gauze long shirt is super, no doubt the white one you purchased is pretty too. Gauze is such a feminine fabric especially for summertime. When I was little my mother made me a gauze smock dress I loved it. She used to say blue is your colour Pam it goes with your eyes. Even today most shade of blue are my favourite and navy blue is my base colour for trousers(pants) accessories etc. I used to adore black but as I have got older it seems to harsh, but it’s still a smart colour.
My mother also loved Lancôme cosmetics etc and she wore make up in their then range but never heavily applied, in many ways you remind me of her when she was your age lovely skin and very natural wavy hair \. I miss her so much she had a wicked sense of humour and we were always laughing.

  22. I have really enjoyed this series and frankly found it very helpful. I hope you do more like it. (PS Your hair in the first photo of the post is absolute perfection — I do hope that that was air dried and if so, that you’re now a convert to air drying!)

  23. Susan,
Your packing is simple and you look wonderful. Your method takes all of guesswork out and still has an upgraded casual appearance. Your black shirt for church is a more stylish way for me to replace my habit of taking along a light cardigan .The white dress is lovely. I have a similar from B&R in flax. I will have to plan on wearing it soon!
Lancomb is a favorite of mine too. The serums can be pricey but effective. The Genifique works best and I agree that it lasts a long time.

The one time I went to North Carolina was for my nephew’s wedding. He was at Lejeune at the time. The wedding/reception was held at Pine Knoll Aquarium. New Bern airport was nice… small and friendly as can be! I stayed two extra days solo and enjoyed my alone time. Exploring the area was relaxing.

I enjoy this series and all of your posts. Your hair is great and very healthy looking.

  24. Hi Susan, I so enjoyed this 3 part series. My first thought was how great your hair looks…casual, but also, elegant. Thanks for sharing your travels.

  25. Love this series. I have used Meryl Norman products since I was in my 20s. This past year I’ve left off the foundation & use tinted moisturizer, a little concealer & mascara. So much easier & faster. I love your longer hair but it was pretty shorter too. I’ve let my gray hair grow longer. I get some negative remarks but I’m enjoying the different ways I can wear it. I’m 79 & life is too short not to do what I feel like doing.

  26. With your long hair and your amazing tan you look wonderfully refreshed! The long hair makes you look much younger as well!

  27. Thank you for this post, Susan. What a wonderful time you must have enjoyed as you visited new and loved areas on your solo trip. Also, thank you for sharing your new beauty routine and selections without our favorite Beauty Counter. Sure miss this product and loved Countertime!

  28. I love your style. You always look well dressed and put together…your elegant but casual style is breathtaking. I look forward to hearing about your adventures and shopping trips. Thank you for sharing.

  29. Thank you for sharing your lovely vacation. I’m just curious about your choice of Lancôme. Did you consider any “clean” cosmetics? I used Lancôme a few years ago but have been using cetaphil as my dermatologist recommended for my sensitive skin.. I feel like I’m missing some anti-aging benefits!!

    1. I have very sensitive skin, and redness, flaking, inflammation, and itching occur with even the highest-rated skincare and cosmetics, so I tend to be loyal to what I know doesn’t cause issues.

  30. Susan, you are such an inspiration, always looking confident, appropriately styled and lady-like! Thank you for inspiring me to do my best with how I present myself as well.

  31. I love that blue gauze shirt with the white tank and pants — you wear it better than the model on the store’s website!

  32. Hi Susan, I really enjoyed following along on your trip! Such a lovely area of the country! And your outfits are so inspiring. What are the cognac sandals that you’re wearing in this post? They look comfy and a great neutral. Thank you!

  33. Thank you for sharing your travels and outfits. I feel like I’m experiencing the trip with you. The areas you visit are my favorite kind of places. I look forward to your posts. Thank you!

  34. I can appreciate the historical aspects but I’d have huge problems visiting a site where so many enslaved people were kept, worked to death and frequently abused. I couldn’t treat it as a holiday destination for my entertainment, I feel saddened by the whole thing.

  35. Hello Susan, yes, this article inspired me to travel again with a planned list of outfits like you show us here. I am, in fact, printing your recommendations that I find terrific. I specially enjoyed the make up tips for eyes and eyebrows since I am now 80 years old and decided to definitely tone down on my makeup! Thank you so much!

  36. Susan, I really enjoy your travel posts! I live in South Carolina, and these suggestions make for nice roadtrips for me and my husband! Your packing tips are also much appreciated! Thank you, Ellen

  37. Susan, your travels are so interesting! Would you add a tab for a file of your posts about your favorite destinations, including hotel and restaurant links? It would be so helpful to research our own trip adventures. Many thanks for all your suggestions!

    1. I wish I could, but I’ve maxed out on tabs. I will be happy to direct you to the post you are looking for. I’m not yet a very good travel blogger but maybe someday!

  38. What a nice post. You have become the best version of you! I thought it was my imagination that eye cream made my eyes puffy and keep going back and trying it again. I’m glad to hear someone else say that so I’m not crazy. You look beautiful without foundation and don’t need it like most os us! When you mentioned you may not have found the right one, I wondered if you have ever tried the Laura Geller line. She is older and her makeup is developed for mature skin. I have never been so amazed by a foundation. It’s called Double Take. I really loved the Baked Balance and Brighten if you like a compact but when I tried the liquid it was even another step up. I can’t believe how inexpensive it is.

So beautiful everywhere! I love that quaint pool area with lot of trees. xo

  39. I absolutely love your style…The pics of the wonderful places you went on Part 3 are lovely…but I would really enjoy seeing more pics of you (in your ensemble choices).
I love the posts where you show how/why you change outfits to better address the heat/cool of the day, or the choices and explanations for when you dress differently for the venue… (dinner vs brunch, museum, shopping, sipping cocktails in a garden with friends…as the day progresses). Your video on what you packed and why is my favorite!

I have learned so much from you. I never learned these things from my mom or my older (family) women. For most of them, “fashion” was an “expensive and frivolous endeavor”…I still have tight budget restraints but have slowly added some classic pieces to my foundational wardrobe and have narrowed it to a few basic colors that work well for me, with “pops” of bright color in my accent pieces (scarves, necklace, earrings)

  41. Thanks for sharing your vacation pics and your wardrobe tips. Whenever you were in the South Park area you were only about 35 miles from where I live.
