I’ll have the eggplant, plum, wine, and grape, please. All of these purplish colors look exceptionally good with gray hair.
One of the questions I get most often is, “What do I wear as a guest to a wedding if I don’t wear dresses?” I have studied what the women guests wore to the last four less formal weddings I have attended. Pant sets or suits in this color range are the hands-down winners. This look can easily be dressed up or down with accessories, and it is made from a very easy to care for flattering fabric.
I paired the top and matching pants with navy blue suede shoes and a sheer scarf with the navy and eggplant colors. Both of these items are several years old. The gunmetal box clutch is from T.J.Maxx a couple of years ago.
A scarf can be the bridge to make unrelated pieces look like a well-planned outfit rather than just what you had clean for the day.
I love the idea of wearing something like this to a wedding or semi-formal event. And while I’m not much of a scarf person, I can see the color in yours picking up the color of the outfit and taking the whole outfit up a notch. You’ve given me so may tips on dressing, I may just have to pay you as my design consultant!
Such a pretty colour on you Susan. I agree that wearing pant outfits to weddings are appropriate. Last summer I wore an evening pants outfit to a formal wedding and received many compliments. I’m going to a less than formal wedding (ceremony in the house and then dinner at a restaurant) in a few weeks and will wear wide leg black crepe pants with a purple velvet evening coat. The coat is many years old but every few years I’m able to wear it and feel quite stylish.
The lovely thing about the colors is that they can be worn also with golden toned accessories for those of us who look better in warm toned items. I love eggplant, cranberry and plum with a scarf of mixed fall hues and gold or bronze accessories.
These are colours I’ve always avoided until a couple of years ago when the owner of a local clothing store managed to convince me to try on an outfit in aubergine that looked so good I wound up buying it in spite of the fact I almost live in black & white (& red). It went with nothing I owned so I had to buy accessories (poor me!) & it acts as a stand-alone in my closet, but is my “go to” for dress-up occasions. As for dresses, I’m so glad to know I’m not the only woman who never wears them. I do have 2 long black skirts (1 velvet, 1 crepe)I wear with long tops that look great on me (they make me look tall, no mean feat when you’re 5’4″) & while I usually pair them with embroidered vests or tops & boots (my updated hippie look), they also look good dressed up with black (or red) pumps or strappy sandals. I agree with you that it really is a matter of knowing what fits your body shape & personality & lifestyle & going with that & not what’s “in” (or not). Thanks, as always, for the great inspiration!
Susan! That color is gorgeous on you! I’m so excited about growing out my gray- I’m starting to love it. And I’ll take a look at this color now since my wardrobe is getting a little boring with blue, black and white.
Oh I am so glad I have gray hair and a wedding coming up in Dec! My design partner, 30 years younger is the bride and I will be coordinating the events. Even though our signature for the blog is a LBD…we will both break away for this wonderful event!- Thanks for the inspiration. By the way, eggplant is one of our favorite colors and we use it often in our designs. The blue you are adding is fab!-Laurel
Love this outfit as I too have all gray hair. These colors do look good on us.I love all your clothes. I am a petite and most will not fit me. Very sad about that.
Keep up the good work as I have found inspiration from what you wear.
Eggplant is definitely one of my favorite colors (even for a bathing suit). It looks great paired with beige or tan accessories too. Just a reminder that the late (very classy) Katharine Hepburn always wore pants also!
My opinion
Susan You look nice in all you wear. However yesterdays post is sooo much better than this one.
This one does nothing here to make me purchase. Maybe just me. Maybe too much of same color. You have so many looks that are just sexier, cuter, more pretty. Please don’t feel bad. I think you know what I mean. You are the best.
Have you had any of your French Kande necklaces rub off on your clothes?! Mine does and I’m sick about it! Love it otherwise but too expensive to be doing that!
Yes, I have contacted them.
Love the colour and your tips for styling! Thanks, Susan!
What is the name of the pants you are wearing Susan, I couldn’t identify them on the web site, they look great on you.
Many thanks Rosie
They are the Clara Sunwoo Eggplant straight leg pants here.
Beautiful.

Love this outfit on you! Sangria is the color of my current favorite ‘transition to fall’ piece of clothing
Beautiful color for you, Susan, and the style is just what I love, simple, chic, elegant.
Thanks for your thoughtful, through, how to style tips.

That color looks especially nice on you and a change from black and navy!

No, I never have had any problems with that jewelry. I am so sorry you did.
Wow, you look absolutely beautiful in this outfit. I love all the darker shades of purple.
Fantastic to see you in a new color!!! Would love to see more outfits like this one~~
Susan, I love your website. Where can I find the scarf your are wearing in this blog?
Thank you. That is an old scarf, so I don’t remember where I bought it or who it is by. I have had some of my scarves for thirty years.
This is one of my favorite colors and will definitely add it to my fall wardrobe. It does look stunning with grey hair!
Have a great day
Do you always have your phone with you?
No, I rarely have my phone with me. Do you mean for the photos? I use a Sony Alpha a6000 mirrorless digital camera for blog photos.
You look absolutely lovely in this eggplant color, Susan.
Thanks for introducing me to ShopMyFairLady.com and Clara Sunwoo. Right up my alley!
I’m so glad to have found you.
A warm welcome to you Ruth!

Love love love this outfit. I’m a light redhead. I think I could make this color work for me!
It is a great base color that can work with most coloring and silver or gold jewelry.
you are such an inspiration! I’m turning 30 and wish I had half as much style as you.
Your comment made my day Rebecca. Thank you!
You look awesome in this! These are my colors too.
I just watched your video- in your basic black outfit, and was very impressed by how well put together each outfit was.
LOVED IT!!
