Brunch on Sunset Terrace

To close out our celebration of my birthday weekend, Mr. Mickey treated me to brunch on the Sunset Terrace at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. The weather report called for seventy degrees and cloudy, so the dress code we agreed upon included a blazer. We dress for comfort in the weather and to be appropriate for the event. Accessories add a personal touch that makes the combos more interesting.

We always discuss the dress code before getting ready for an outing. On this day, it was “elevated casual.” That means nice jeans or khaki pants and a blazer.

The blazer was from J.Crew last year, and it is the perfect choice to wear with flare-leg jeans and pants. The most similar blazer they have now is here. I often reach for this blazer because of the length, slim cut, and tailored details. Crisp shoulders and lapels without showy buttons make this a timeless choice. The length stops mid-behind, the most flattering on my inverted triangle shape. If I had a pear shape, this length would draw a line at the widest part of my body, and if I wore it with light-colored pants, the attention would be even more pronounced.

The best jackets for a pear-shaped body add volume to the bust and shoulder areas, avoiding the hip area altogether or skimming over it. A cropped jacket will add structure and interest to the shoulder and bust areas while showing off the slim waist.

The jeans are from Banana Republic from last year. The most similar ones now are here. I purchased these jeans for the dark wash, the slim-fitting waist through the hips style, and the length. Flare and wide-leg pants should almost touch the floor in the back. The white tank is here.

The socks of the day!

Accessories are always the icing on the cake for me. I chose warm brown and tan elements to honor this beautiful fall-like day. Gold jewelry is not the right choice for my cool skin tone, so I don’t concern myself with matching goldtone hardware on leather accessories.

The only new accessory is the bracelet here. It was a birthday gift from my sweet friend Suzanne, who designs Beauty in Stone Jewelry. We became fast friends when we met at an event about seven years ago. She is renowned for her jewelry near and far from her East Tennessee home.

The edgy pearl chain bracelet is here. I don’t collaborate with brands anymore, but Suzanne still allows me to share a discount code with you. Use the code SAS10 for $10 off one item on her website.

Lunch on the Sunset Terrace is always a delightful event. We often start with a shrimp cocktail. The cocktail sauce is always spot on, but the new dill sauce was delicious, too.

Since he became anemic last year, Mr. Mickey orders beef about once a month. The Smashed Burger is one of his favorites.

I ordered my usual Lobster Cobb salad, which is always fresh and delicious.

For dessert, we ordered the Nutella Peanut Butter Bar, which includes Nutella mousse, brownie, Nutella ganache, Frangelico caramel, candied hazelnut, and peanut butter anglaise milk chocolate chantilly. Since it was a birthday celebration, there was also a lovely chocolate dessert on the house.

The panoramic view from our table is always awe-inspiring.

We hope you enjoyed coming along for the weekend of celebrations. Thank you for being part of our journey.

  13. Having money helps to enjoy treats like your terrace dining. But low social security income does not. I didn’t get a gift this birthday 9th Sept. Instead I got a bucket of sadness – my husband died. 52 years of wedded bliss. Now like to poorer and lonely. I love your blog.

  14. I really like that casual style when you wear these pants. The colors combination is perfect. The chic side is often enhanced by your accessories, always very well matched. 18. What a lovely birthday week you have had! You always look the epitome of grace and elegance. I have followed you for several years and always appreciate the suggestions you make regarding styling clothes. Love Mr Mickey’s socks. My son used to be a pilot on an air ambulance for a children’s hospital and he always wore humorous socks as it used to give the older children a bit of a giggle.

  19. Susan, of all the bloggers/vloggers I follow, your style aesthetic is the closest to mine. I’m 5′ 2″ so I have more of a petite aesthetic. Your clothing combinations always inspire me. You are always put together so beautifully! I am also impressed by how you seem to be able to capture just the right facial expressions and stance in every photo. I try to emulate your strategies in my photos. You look so confident and lovely in each image. I think you did a, “How to look your best in photos”, blog once upon a time. Would you be willing to do another?

Happy birthday wishes to you and Mr. Mickey and here’s to many more!
    Cheers!
    Carolyn from AZ

    Best wishes as always!

  25. I love Mr. Micky’s “smokey” Saddle Shoes. My late husband used to wear them. Plus, they match your hand bag. Happy Birthday.

  26. Hello,
I really appreciate your style and recommendations and have followed you through the years. I am still working in the corporate universe as a communication consultant ( 35 years) and have never worn jeans. You look so wonderful and appropriate when you feature jeans; however they are usually too casual for my lifestyle. I live in Atlanta. What dress pants do you recommend for a more casual look?
    Thank you,
    Monica Oakley

  27. You two always look so neat. Grove Park Inn is one of my favorite stops when we are in Asheville, which is not often enough.
