Animal Print

Olive, khaki, tan, and other golden colors will never allow me to look my best because my skin has cool blue undertones. So, even though I love those colors on others, I must wear them away from my face.

Prints other than animal, reptile, stripes, and geometric are also not my best styling options. I usually add prints, bright colors, and texture to my looks with scarves, but the animal-print jeans (here) appealed to me. I can wear them with a crisp white blouse or a denim shirt in spring, a turtleneck, and short boots in fall. The loose fit is comfortable and versatile. Animal print, like denim, is considered neutral.

The jeans are here and the shoes are here. The top and earrings are from a few years ago, but I bought them here.

Whenever I wear large statement earrings, I often add a bold bracelet, but never a necklace. Since the top has bell sleeves, I added the large link bracelet and an equally bold watch.

I wore this look on a recent, much warmer, sunny Friday when I took Mr. Mickey to doctor’s appointments and a late lunch.

Trying new things, like animal-print jeans or a new fragrance, makes life more enjoyable. In the next post, I will share the skincare line I’ve started using. My results have been splendid!

  1. I almost bought these pants, when I got the bag from your last post! I hesitated, because they don’t have stretch. Without stretch, pants can be too tight in the waist for me. I have a strait up and down shape, as apposed to a hourglass shape. If I store fat, it always goes to my mid-section. Often times, if pants fit in the waist, they are too big everywhere else. I can alter them, but it is a hassle. What size did you get? You look lovely in them.

  2. I really like the bit of flip at the end of your hair as styled in the photos. I read your response above about Mr. Mickey and his continued progress. Good to hear! I just don’t feel comfortable in a wide swath of animal print. But I do enjoy wearing accessories with animal print. Wishing you and yours good times this week.

  3. What a great look! It both classy and fun. I always learn something from your posts. I wear that same Libre perfume! It is one of three fragrances I return to time and time again. I love the lavender, orange blossom, and saffron. Have you tried Jo Malone fragrances? My two favorites are Wood Sage & Sea Salt, which I wear in summer, and Pomegranate Noir, which I wear November through January.

  4. You look great, despite the outfit being a bit out of your traditional look! I can’t find the length listed on the website. Could you measure your inseam? Thank you b

    1. The pants are ankle length but mid-rise so they are worn lower on the waist. The inseam is 26 inches. I plan to wear them with low pumps, sandals and short fitted booties.

  5. I love the leopard pants! You look great in them! Leopard print is a favorite of mine, glad it’s always in style!

  6. What a snazzy outfit! I love it. I never wear animal prints and generally don’t like them, but this looks smashing! Two other things: 1) I love your longer hair! 2) It was wonderful to see you the other day, and the first thing I noticed was how amazing your skin looks. It always looks fabulous, and yet, I could see a marked difference from when I last saw you a month ago or so. I can’t wait for your next blog to discover what you’re using! Thank you for making us all feel more beautiful, even if it’s just with a smile because we get to see you and hear from you!

  7. Love this outfit! The animal print is small enough to not be too much, but yet a bold, fun statement. Yours look more black/gray than the link to Mango, which calls it brown…and looks more brown. Are yours a color no longer available…or maybe it’s the lighting in your photo. I can totally see these in other season outfits…thanks for sharing!

  8. Really nice look , yes a white top in warmer weather would look smart . Hope Mr Mickey passed his test with Dr’s and he had top marks. A bit of nice warm Spring weather sunshine is what we need in the Northern Hemisphere you ladies in Southern Hemisphere ahh I can only dream.
    Regards to you both ,

  9. You always give such great tips and how or why you style your wardrobe. Now you are also letting us know where you wear your clothes (Dr. appointments, shopping, luncheons, etc.) which I appreciate.
Would you please remind me on how to test our skin for warm or cool colors? I think my skin tone has changed slightly as it seems I can now wear colors that I have not been able to in the past. I had my colors done a looong time ago. The cosmetologist mentioned at the time that some people’s skin change over the years.
Thank you again for all the tips you share with us.

    1. Thank you, Clara. Choosing your metals is the easiest way to identify warm vs cool undertones. I’ve always known that white gold or silver looked best on me. Colors such as ivory, tan, or olive make me look tired and unwell. If you feel more rested and vibrant in a color, that will also be a clue. Our best colors may be more dusty or toned down as we age, and our own coloring fades to a softer palette.

  10. Susan those jeans are so cute! I’m not familiar with that brand. Could you let me know on sizing? I wear a lot of jJill size 4, and Chicos, size 0 if that helps for comparison.

You look great in that outfit.

    1. The description mentioned that the jeans run small, so I bought a size 8, but a 6 would have been fine. I also wear a Chico’s size 0.

  11. Those pants are so cute on you. I am glad to see that you are looking at new options. I have the same pants (and several others with various designs ) and a stack of black and navy tops to wear with them. I just love them. At 90 years of age I am always looking for new options. It is fun.

  12. You look wonderful! From the top of your head (love the little flip in your hair today) to the tips of your toes (great shoes). And those animal print jeans were such a surprise…gorgeous. Wishing you and yours well.

  13. Thanks for the seal of approval on animal print! It livens up neutrals. I will wear tailored jeans tomorrow print as you demonstrated so well.

  14. I’ve never worn animal print as I don’t look well in the warmer colors. But think I’ll try some animal print pants. Thanks for the post and am looking forward to your post about your new skin care products.

  15. Dear Susan, I really like your hair! It has the little bit of curl on the ends that is charming. I have enjoyed your posts so much over the years. Keep up the good work! 🙂

  16. Susan, have you considered wearing the latest animal print, snakeskin, which is a black & white combo? Like you, I look so much better in cool vibrant colours and b & w. So just bought a shawl scarf in snakeskin pattern & it lights up my face.
Mr Mickey and your parents are so lucky to have you as their kind and supportive care giver. The world needs more people like you right now. Sincere wishes from your Canadian fan.

  17. What an inspiration you are! Breaking out of our normal style routine is, I think, refreshing. And yes, please do share your skincare routine! Thank you Susan.

  18. Susan, you look great! I really like the outfit on you. I like your hair, too. I am curious how you style your hair and what tools you use. Your blog has been very helpful to me over the years, Thank you so much continuing to post.

    1. I blow dry my hair to smooth it out and roll it on large ceramic thermal rollers here while I put on makeup. If you use hairspray, wait until after you remove the rollers to apply it.

  19. Hi Susan,

I like the animal print jeans but the jeans in the link are a tan and black print and the ones you are wearing look like a black & white print? Also, the fragrance link doesn’t go to a perfume, I only see miscellaneous things. If you could please clarify, thank you!

    1. The jeans in the link are the ones I am wearing. Tan with black spots is the color. The lighting might be showing it as different. The link is for Libre Le Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent.

  20. Susan, thank you for sharing your lovely lifestyle. I have learned so much from you when it comes to styling my clothing and choosing makeup. Your beautiful hair has always intrigued me and I am envious of how you style it. Susan, I particularly admire your hair in the photos of this post. Would you consider telling us about your hair products? Also, at my age of 75, I still have not mastered hair tools. Your hair always looks so neat and natural.. I have trouble with my side bang; I never can achieve what I call the soft sweep to the side. Would you consider doing a video showing how you have mastered this soft flattering look? Thank you, Susan. I really enjoy your posts and congratulations on you and Mr. Mickey living your best life together.

    1. I took the test here to learn which Kérastase products are right for my hair. It is fine and wavy, so I use a vented brush to blow it dry. While the hair is still warm, I roll the top and crown in large ceramic rollers to let it cool while I put on my makeup. Wait until after you remove the rollers to use hairspray to keep from losing strands. The heat in your hair is what sets the curls and gives a lift.
