Do you always wear your plain white shirt in the same few ways? I’ve worn this long tunic shirt as a swimsuit coverup, but it also goes great with leggings, sneakers, and a black tank for my morning walk. I’ve worn it over straight-leg jeans with a quilted vest and short boots for a casual Saturday afternoon look. Today, I’m styling it in a more dressed-up look with heeled sandals, slim-fitting slacks, and elevated accessories.
Turning up the sleeves, popping the collar, and buttoning only two buttons at the bodice shows enough of the body to keep the long shirt from overwhelming my 5’5″ frame. Adding bold silver earrings, a bracelet, and a domed ring with crystals keeps the eye moving from head to toe.
The website shows the tunic styled casually, but don’t let that limit your creativity. Part of the joy of owning great basics is the endless possibilities of wearing them differently each time.
The Organic Cotton Weekend Tunic is here. The bag is here. The other items are from previous seasons or years. Shopping links may allow me to earn a small commission, but it will never cost you more.
Miss Susan, You look sharp this morning! (Well, it’s morning to me ;-)) This is a look that I will emulate as I rebuild my wardrobe after weight loss.
So, so happy to hear that supplies are getting to the folks who need them. I have tears in my eyes as I read the account of the man who saluted the military trucks. Boy howdy, getting out the vote is a must. You are so right…”our vote is our voice.”
Amen.
Yes – Vote – preferably in person on Tues, Nov 5th.
This is another item to add to my closet. I can now see wearing many ways as you mentioned. Another great look.
It’s wonderful to hear about the supplies getting to the people that need help. Yea, we need to vote next month!
Americans are so much more demonstrably patriotic than us Brits. I don’t think anyone here would salute military except on maybe Remembrance Day.
Well done to everyone who’s helping in such a national emergency.
I have an oversized white blouse with thin navy stripes and looked overwhelmed in it until I rolled up the sleeves like you did in the photo. The little things you demonstrate make a big difference! Thinking of everyone in the NC, TN and VA corner and praying for comfort and hope for everyone. It’s wonderful to see all the goods and labor that are flooding in to help. In the end, we’re all Americans and that’s what we do!
Lovely shirt. Swimsuit coverup? I didn’t see that picture.
Sometimes the imagination is better than the real picture. 😛
You continue to help me style similar items I have hanging in my closet. I also have learned to develop a casual pacific northwest look that keeps my look fresh, stylish and easy. I certainly don’t need a closet full of new clothes all the time. I replenish my basics as they need it and stay away from too many trendy pieces. I have saved myself time and money following your ideas. Thank you for conveying to your readers that aid is getting to the storm victims. The devastation is heartbreaking. I feel so fortunate to live in a country that that takes care of its people. I certainly salute the folks that put themselves out there to meet the needs of our people. My eyes are damp too. Yes, vote.
Great tunic! And I have a similar one that I will pull out for the fall. Too hot in Texas to wear during the day. And I need new slim pants.
Thanks for the reminder too! I am a voter registrar here in Texas. This is the last to register here. Early Voting starts 10/21.
Hi Susan I absolutely love the tunic. I wonder if it would work for me I’m 4 11″
and I have a tummy to hide. Would heeled sandals work better for me?
I am so pleased to hear that people are being assisted with this disaster and pray everyone is safe with the next hurricane coming through.
What a touching story of the man alongside the road may he be blessed.
Well Susan you Mr Mickey and your families keep safe.
God Bless
ELIZABETH SA
If you use my formula, a tunic can also work for you: heels, narrow-leg pants, and turned-up sleeves.
Thank you, dear Elizabeth.
I love all your looks! Such a wonderful way to style the tunic. I’ll admit I buy more clothes from your recommendations and I’ve actually worked in three clothing boutiques and own more clothes than I will probably wear and that’s after donating. I can’t give up some of my really nice basics. This Gap shirt is on sale. I had to order a large because the medium is not available. I hope it’s not too big. I usually wear medium. What size are you wearing? I’m 5’3” and around 132 lbs
I am wearing a size medium.
Just adorable as always!
Hey that’s a really nice look , like the slim pants , I am not a fan of wide flapping pants but of course I always respect
people’s personal choices .
Yes America always steps up when there is is disaster in the world or of course even in America itself. It make my blood boil when far flung Middle East countries criticise America but when there is a massive earthquake or other natural disaster America is the first to send aid in huge amounts . these countries take take take and still singe.
Be proud of who you are America and really none of my business but vote wise and intelligent. There is a nasty Hurricane heading towards Florida . When British news bores me I always turn to CNN it’s good coverage . . We have recently had our General Election British Electoral campaigning is nothing like the excitement of the WHITEHOUSE race. Good luck for November . One of your Candidates says the Brits love him , sorry but we detest him. …
Susan although your blog is mainly about fashion and style it also touches on health topics and the such .
Well done to you Susan for coming into our lives your followers all over the world , it’s a great thing you do .
Well done ,you make a difference
Kindest regards to you and Mr Mickey .Pamela UK
Thank you, Pamela. I’m glad you’ve benefited from what I share.
Thank goodness, finally a post without those horrible wide legged pants or bell bottoms. You look lovely in the thinner (not skinny) bottoms. Please post more posts like this.
I enjoy some of the more up to date looks as well as the classics.
I felt so helpless when I saw on the news what you went through but am glad to see you are getting help and so glad to see you are ok.
I live in Queensland Australia, and we have also had our share of disasters etc. and it’s good to see the human spirit shine through.
Love your idea for a long white shirt
All the best to you and Mr. Micky, Marie
Thank you for mentioning the relief efforts in the North Carolina/Tennessee mountains. I have a seasonal home there. As requested by authorities, I stayed away for several days but, once more roads were open, flew to Charlotte and rented a car to drive to our area.
Like you said, the sky is full of helicopters – they are refueling in flight to avoid down time. They are delivering supplies to Little Switzerland, Banner Elk and the other up-mountain communities. Facebook pages have sprung up with offers of help, mules are being used to get to areas otherwise inaccessible.
Drones are being used for smaller deliveries like medicines. Neighbors are helping neighbors, Churches and restaurants are serving hot meals. It’s never enough in the early days of a tragedy but help is flowing. We got power back Sunday night.
I also appreciate your fashion sense. While I enjoy seeing how you put together an outfit our heights and builds are totally different (short and curvy here). What I have learned most from you is to know what styles most flatter me and to and be true to MY style.
Thank you!
Love your blog -your clothes are beautiful and you wear them well.
The story about the man saluting the passing military trucks brought tears to my eyes.
I continue to pray for the victims of the hurricanes. Yes, Americans all over our country are so generous and willing to help.
Hope there is a large turnout for the election. It is so important to vote.
I would like to see more American flags displayed on homes and businesses.
Take care of yourself and the ever dapper Mr. Mickey.
Yes Our vote is our voice!!!
Susan, you look lovely, you would never know you have just been through such a difficult time with the hurricane by the way you look. Hopefully you feel as good inside as you look on the outside.
You always have a glow about you.
Thank you, Katherine. We were blessed that our part of the city did not flood nor did it receive much damage from the winds.
Thank you, once more, Susan, for your elegant but accessible wardrobe inspirations.
I am glad you were unharmed by the hurricane and hope you stay safe.
Thank you for assuring us that federal assistance is arriving. . It is good to know that our federal government is both compassionate and competent to help us when we are in need. I’ve seen reports of how conditions are difficult with the downed trees and destroyed roads, but I know residents and helpers are being heroic.
Finally, thanks for the reminder to vote! I did, here in Minnesota, the first day we could — September 20.
Stay safe.
Vote early.. Save our country. God Bless all the people that have helped with this Hurricane. So many have donated and are on the ground we have a great country we need to fight for it. Love your outfit you always look polished. Thank you
Smiled when I opened the email this morning because this is what I was wearing yesterday—more casually styled but just the right thing for a rainy day in Maine, painting in the studio. Thank you for including the reminder to register and vote—my absentee ballot arrived yesterday and I’ll be dropping it off at City Hall later this week. So glad you all got through Helene without major damage—hoping Milton misses you all together.
I do not like how a tunic top as long as that white shirt wrinkles when you sit or drive while wearing it.
Thankful especially for all the wonderful volunteers. Neighbor helping neighbor.
Here in FL we have another one almost here.
I love that outfit, so comfortable but always appropriate.
Milton is terrifying! Stay safe.
Please stay safe, we watch the news of your awful weather events from afar and think of you both often. best regards, Gail, NZ
Thank you, Gail. We will be glad to see this storm season end.
I’m sorry to hear of such terrible destruction and loss of life in America from the severe weather. I live in Australia, and some years ago when we had horrific fires , firefighters from the US. And Canada came across to assist. It was very much appreciated, and very sadly some American firefighters died helping us out. All the best with your recovery .
Interesting fact: October 100 years ago , the Australian government introduced compulsory voting for our elections!
Hi Susan, totally agree about pairing this outfit with these stunning heeled sandals. You wear them wonderfully. Always in a casual style, you don’t forget to always be so feminine, and I love it so much.
I love the reminder to be creative when putting outfits together and I especially love the sensitive and compassionate comments from all your readers today! I live in NC and Helene stayed west of us but we are all affected by the devastation and loss of life in our mountains. In this uneasy political season, it’s heartening to hear these kind words and to see help arriving from all over.
Good reminder to vote. ♥️
I love that you served in the Navy. Thank you for your service. My husband is a 30 year retired Navy Master Chief E9. He is now a 100% DAV. He is currently in hospital with covid and 85 years old. We love to travel and we just came back from Ireland and so we have decided no more overseas trips. We were in Hungary, Austria and Germany in April and when we got back he ended up in the hospital. So we will stay in the states for travel now. We live in central Mississippi. But he was originally from the coast and lost everything in Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He rebuilt but he sold his home there after we married 6 years ago. So we know how devastating these hurricanes are. Our prayers are with these people.
Do you hv any style suggestions for women over 60 & plus sized?
When I wore plus sizes, I avoided bright colors and bold prints. Proper fit should be a priority. Anything baggy and oversized makes us look larger than we are. Bring the focus to your favorite bits and downplay your least favorite. For example, if you have a larger bottom than you would like, wear slim-fitting dark pants that flare out from above the knee to balance your silhouette, and wear attractive tops and pretty earrings to draw attention to your face.
Dear Susan
I love your fashion sense and look forward to receiving your emails. I am 86 and live in the UK. I still work as a Nurse . Having started at 16. I mostly work from home . I also go to the gym 3 times a week. Could you tell me where I might purchase a blue top like the one you wear with leggings?
Merry Christmas
Susanna
Click on the word Vest underneath the picture and you will be taken to the site to buy it. Thank you for being a nurse.
