Coats and Everyday Looks

A lovely reader named Lu emailed to request a post on choosing and sizing a long coat (overcoat) and the best jewelry tone with gray hair. She wrote, “My hair is about the same color and style as yours, and I have found lately silver-tone jewelry looks better than gold tones on me even tho I am generally warm.”

I have a small collection of pearl earrings mounted in silver. They seem to go with nearly anything and brighten my face. The small dot ones I’m wearing are here. Even if the other jewelry or hardware in my look is gold, I almost always wear silver earrings.

Overcoats should be large enough to fit over sweaters and blazers without feeling too tight. The most versatile and modern-looking full-length coats hit at the ankles or the mid-calf. Knee length and shorter are always tricky to wear with dresses. I chose this gray double-faced wool one because the color complements my hair and will go with the rest of my wardrobe. My coat is from last year, but a similar style is here.

Adding a large brooch or pin to your coat is stylish again so you may find a broader selection. I’ve not seen many pins offered in recent years. A few months ago, I found the silver one at COS. The east/west leather bag is also from COS. However, both items appear to be sold out now.

I comb the sites this time of year for red items. Red is one of my favorite accent colors, but it isn’t always available with a blue undertone to blend with my coloring. Orange-red makes me look unwell. I was pleased to find the wool-blend crop jacket here.

Even if I stay home for the day, I shower and dress by 8 am. I’ve learned that it’s best to be ready for anything. The comfortable crew-neck sweater (here) is warmer than my preferred V-necks. My sweater is a size medium.

The relaxed flare jeans are here. This is the type of look I often reach for in winter. It is comfortable, casual, and versatile. I can dress it up or down and be ready to dash out the door in minutes while looking respectable.

I’m starting to resemble a Bassett hound, so I’m glad my hair appointment is tomorrow. It’s time for a change.

  1. Hi Susan!
Can you provide a link to the black boots you are wearing in this post? They look great with both your jeans & overcoat and would be perfect for church this time of year. Thank you!

  2. Hi Susan, I was so disappointed the Forever Sweater in Azul isn’t available. But now I know what to pay closer attention to in the future. Do you have a current list of your favorite shopping sites or a link to a previous posting of them?
I did get out a pin tucked away in my jewelry box for my royal blue wool coat for the holidays and the owner of Merle Norman certainly noticed when I walked in, and we began a conversation. I have seen a number of pins once again in the stores. Do you think we will see that just for this past fall and winter season? Looking forward to your change in hairstyle. Best Wishes in the new year for you, Mr. M. and your family.

  3. I am not getting your emails any more. I didn’t change anything on my laptop, so not sure why. Could you please add my email to your list.
    Thank you very much.

    1. It isn’t your fault, Deborah. We are working on the problem. Some email servers are being blocked by my ISP so I’ve had to order a new one.

  4. Thank you for this post. I think the long gray coat looks so modern without buttons. I also have have longer silver hair and am thinking of changing the style. You have excellent taste so I am looking forward to your new look.

  5. It certainly made my day getting a post from you. You’ve been missed! I’m hoping that you had peace-filled holidays and are feeling refreshed. I trust that Mr. Mickey is continuing to gain strength and that your folks are feeling much better as well. Your ensemble looks fabulous and I shall be thinking of you tomorrow as I sit in my hairdressers chair as well.

  6. I’m almost positive you’ve explained at least once in the past the reason you prefer v-necklines, but can you explain again please? If I have a diamond-shaped face, a long neck, and a small bust and shoulders, how do I choose the necklines that are best for me? I own lots of v-neck tops, but now I’m finding I think I look better in crewnecks.

    1. Crew, boat. or ballerina necklines will be your best necklines. The straight lines of V-necks counter my roundness and make me look a little taller.

  7. I have some really pretty brooches that were my Mother’s, and I have picked up several beautiful ones at thrift stores for very little cost. I was inspired to wear them more often ( along with my pearl necklace) after watching The Crown. Queen Elizabeth looked very classy and wore a lot of brooches.

  8. It was nice to see your post. I really like the everyday look and that you are always ready to go out the door for anything. I think it makes a difference in how I feel for the day. I also always add makeup just to make me feel better.
I’m looking forward to seeing your new hair cut. I really like the longer look.

  9. DItto on the haircut. I finally went Monday and love it. Why didnt I do it in early December? Next year, I’ll do better. Also just bought two sweaters. Always love your educational blogs!

  11. I love your longer hair! My hair is same color as yours and I go from short to longer frequently. Enjoy switching it up! Praying 2025 brings your family blessings of health!

  12. Happy New Year Susan! For some reason I have not been getting your e mails. I don’t always check my junk folder but will from now on. I did get this one today. I just love red and that wool jacket is beautiful.
