Hope

We are surrounded by devastation so vast it is hard to comprehend, but we are safe. We have power, cell and internet service, and food, so my immediate family and local friends are genuinely blessed. For example, my family members in nearby North Carolina may not have restored power for three months. The roads and bridges throughout the region are so damaged that repairing the infrastructure will take months.

You may be concerned about loved ones living in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina that you have not heard from. It may be because the only option they have to let you know they are safe is to walk many miles over treacherous broken roads with countless downed power lines to get to a phone that works.

While I am physically safe, I feel the trauma of what surrounds me deeply. Words are failing me now, but I wanted to tell all of you who have kindly emailed that we are safe. Our shared connection over the years has comforted me in countless ways. Thank you for your concern and kindness.

This aerial photo is of Erwin, seventeen miles from our home along Interstate 26, the road we have taken countless times to visit Asheville.

The local newscast here has been picked up by many national outlets including Southern Living.

  1. Thank you for the update, Susan. Your feelings are natural. The scale of this tragedy and the human suffering are enormous. It is a shock, even from far away.

  2. Oh, Susan and Mr. Mickey, I just checked your blog praying you were safe and well. We pass through your area twice a year on our way to NH from Texas. And every time we see the sign for JC I think if you and your wonderful blog. We drive up the hill one time and stopped by your favorite restaurant, Gourmet, and perked into the Grove Park in Asheville. I cannot imagine how everyone is faring. Please know we are thinking of you…

  3. So glad you are fine. Praying for all who are affected. We were heading to Asheville later in October but obviously that has changed. We love that area. It’s so devastating to see the damage.

  4. The devastation has left me speechless and heartbroken. Will be keeping this area of our country, and its people in prayer.

  5. Oh my word, so much devastation. You can’t evade the power of the weather, no matter how much you plan.
So pleased to hear you and yours are all ok and I hope all the people affected get all the help they need.

  6. Susan,
Like many others I have been concerned for your and Mr Mickey’s safety. Thankfully you are safe. The tornado outbreak of April 27, 2011, affected my state of Alabama and cut a swath from Mississippi to Virginia. There was so much damage to my county, the city of Cullman, and seriously damaged was my daughter’s home. The ravages that have affected your infrastructure are far worse, however, as our roads were not destroyed. I have shed many tears watching videos of hillsides coming down and water washing away homes and businesses. I continue to pray for those you know, those who are missing, and those who lost their lives. Thank you for sharing this update.

  7. I’m so relieved to hear that you are okay. You were the first person I thought of when I heard about the devastation in Asheville. I have grown to love that community through your posts, even though I have never been there. Sending prayers for all those that are going through this.

  8. Thank you for the update and that you and your family are safe, have been praying for the many who have lost so much in this terrible storm.

  9. So glad you and your families are safe. The devastation from this storm is unbelievable. And many people have said they had no idea it was going to be this bad. This makes me so sad. Prayers to all these families.

  10. Susan, I am so relieved to hear you are okay. I can’t begin to imagine living with that kind of devastation.
You are all in my prayers and hope you and your family and friends remain in good shape.
    Beth

  11. Thank you for updating all of us!! You have been in our prayers!
I love this area and I am so sad! Asheville and Chimney Rock are two of my favorite places to visit!
    Please take care!

  12. So glad you are alright. I live in Mars Hill and it is the same here. The town of Erwin, TN, and Chimney Rock, NC, are gone. Devastation is everywhere. We will make it.

  13. Susan,

I’ve been thinking about you all weekend. I pray for all who have been impacted by this devastation.

    Love,
    Melanie

  14. I’m so glad you Mr. Mickey and your family are ok. I was shocked this morning when I saw the devastation in Asheville! I will be praying for the people of that area. It’s a beautiful place! I am just shocked!

  15. Glad you are safe. Such destruction. I have family members in S.C. and they are safe. Lives have been altered in many ways.

  16. Happy to hear you and your family are safe. When we were living in San Diego from 1996-2004 I realized I could not live with the fear of fires I would see from a distance. With the last large fire we decided to come back east. About a year after we left another fire consumed many houses in our development. Many homes were burnt to the ground. It was just luck that we had moved in time. The next disaster was in NJ with hurricane Sandy. We had bought a generator for our home which is about 30 minutes drive time from the ocean. Unfortunately the people installing the generator were taking their time getting the town permissions and inspections. The generator was finally installed 3 days before Sandy hit. Again we were fortunate and avoided damage. Nature has its good and bad fortunately there is more good to look forward to. Stay safe.

  17. I am so glad to hear you are safe, but like you I am devastated for everyone affected by this storm. Knowing what your friends and family will be dealing with is heartbreaking. My cousin and her family in Florida have 6-12” of rain throughout their home in the St. Petersburg area and have lost all their furniture. Mold sets in within 3 days, so they have been working furiously to remove wallboard and molding. Fortunately they have family inland that they can stay with for the immediate future. The highest winds were 100 miles out in the gulf and they still had a 6’ storm surge.

  18. I have been so worried for you, your family and Mr. Mickey. I’ve seen the devastating damage done to your area on the news. It is staggering. I’m heatbroken for the people of our country living in that huge swath left in the storm’s wake. Take care. I’m praying for you all.

  19. I thought of you first when I heard about Asheville. So thankful you are safe but praying for all those who have lost so much.

  20. I have not been watching the news and am embarrassed to say that I did not realize that Tennessee and North Carolina were hit so hard by Helene. The level of devastation is heartbreaking. We live in Florida in a part of the state that was spared from the worst of the storm. I had no idea that Tennessee was in its path. I am so happy to hear that you and Mr. Mickey are safe and have power and that your home was not damaged. I cannot imagine what your family and friends in North Carolina are going through with no power. Even a few days without power is disturbing, let alone three months. Thank-you for letting us know what is happening.

  21. So thankful you are safe. I am in Rutherford County, NC, an area heavily hit but I am fortunate that my home is standing. No power until probably Friday and a lot of trees down on the property, but all my family is safe and that’s the most important thing. God is good, even in the bad times.

  22. Thinking of you , Mr Mickey and your families . We have had a lot of rain in the UK as well but fortunately we live on top of a hill. I hope this is all sorted out before Christmas xxx

  23. I’m so sorry for the suffering and loss that so many are experiencing.
It is so shocking that a hurricane could cause so much damage so far inland.
Thank you for updating us and I’m so thankful that you and yours are OK.
    Prayers for restoration, soon!

  24. I have been praying for you and Mr Mickey. I am so glad to read you & near by family are safe. I am so sorry for the devastation your part of the country is experiencing. Stay safe.

  25. My heart and prayers go out to everyone in these areas. So sad! Asheville has always been one of my favorite areas to visit.

  26. Susan, I have thought of you so much. these past days. My family is also safe and I am very thankful for that and that you are safe. Please take care!

  27. Thank you for updating us. When I heard about Asheville I thought of you right away. We have family in Savannah without power, but the devastation in NC and Tennessee is so much worse and hard to comprehend.

  28. Susan, so glad you are both safe. I can’t believe it was just over a week ago when I saw you lunching in Banner Elk. Our world can change in a minute….

  29. So glad you and Mr. Mickey are safe. You and Mr. Mickey were one of the first people I thought of in that area. How are your parents doing? My husband and I live in Greensboro, NC and often go to the mountains, especially in the fall. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone there. Enjoy your posts so much for the fashions, nutrition advice and the wonderful restaurant recommendations.

  30. Thank you for your update. I have wondered how you and your family were fairing. I have family in the Easly, SC area. So travel I-40 and Route 26 from Southern Kentucky. They are all well. Praying for the whole region.

  31. I’m so glad you’re safe..we just got back home from being evacuated from the fire in North Lake Tahoe..you realize how unimportant material possessions are…

  32. It’s hard to comprehend unless you’ve been through it..for us on the Western side of the States, it’s wildfires..we just got back into our house after evacuating from the North Lake Tahoe fire..you realize what’s truly important in a hurry

  33. So thankful you and your family are ok. You have been on my mind and in my prayers. Thank you for letting us know you are safe.

  34. Praying for everyone in your area. Thank you for posting. I was concerned for you. We took one of the last flights out of Charlotte on Thursday after driving from Brevard, NC. It’s hard to imagine that all the roads we took that day are now closed due to flooding. So devastating.

  35. I can’t imagine all the devastation and the stress of the aftermath cleanup. So very grateful you and Mr Mickey are ok. Praying for all who have been touched by Helene.

  36. I lived on the Texas Gulf Coast most of my life. Have seen large boats in the middle of highways. One beach home that my dad built had the roof blown off and the pier demolished. But the worst of all were the drowned horses and cows. Bless the people of the states involved. So important to help others at a time of need. Glad you and Mr Mickey are safe!

  37. Dear Susan, thank you for sharing. I join you in mourning this heart-breaking loss and pray for the well being of all creatures great and small as well as for the healing of Mother Earth.

  38. So glad you are safe. Thank you for taking the time to let us know. Sending daily prayers of swift recovery to everyone in Helene’s path.

    Barbara from San Diego, CA

  39. Thank you for letting us know you are ok. Many are not. I am hoping that things, utilities, will be up and running sooner than later. My thoughts are with the people living in the areas of the flooding and wind.

  40. So glad y’all are safe and not physically impacted. I have relatives in Greenville SC and their power and internet was restored this morning. Many prayers for your family and those impacted. What I see on tv is hard to comprehend.

  41. I am so glad that you and Mr. Mickey are OK. I have been reading your blog for years, and watched USA news networks from here in Canada with shock and dismay. London, Ontario is in Tornado Alley (Ohio Valley) so your weather affects us days later. But we never expected Helene to be so severe that it rained here for two days. Your beautiful countryside was enjoyed whenever we travelled to Florida – it is a somber contrast to our memories. We hope you stay well, recover quicker and continue to share your state’s gorgeous landscape with us. Keep your chin up!

  42. Dear Susan … I am devasted by your news . I hope and pray for your safety! My thoughts are with the poor people who have been badly affected!
Take care my dear friend, sending you tons of love and courage from South Africa ❤️

  43. I am relieved to see your post. You have been on my mind and in my prayers. Good luck to you all. The news coming to the west coast has been very minimal. Stay safe.

  44. Susan, I have read about and seen pictures of the devastation. These are areas that my Husband and I have visited over the last few decades and I feel so deeply for the people in those areas. I am glad to read that you and your family members are safe. Although, like you said, the devastation is all around you. Please continue to stay safe and healthy, and prayers for all those affected and for a long time to come.

  45. Wow, the news reports here in Indiana are not even addressing the amount of damage that has occurred in your region! Thank goodness you and your loved ones are safe!

    Ed

  46. I’m so relived to hear that you, Mr Mickey and your family are okay. The power of nature is quite frightening to see.
I will be keeping everyone in my prayers and hope that aid comes quickly to those that need it.

  47. I am so glad that you are safe.
It is just awful the devastation that you have witness
May God bring you peace and strength through this trying time

  48. When I saw pictures from the area, I thought about you and hoped you and yours were safe. We live in Naples, Fl most of the year. When we were hit by Ian two years ago, it looked like the area was bombed. The water destruction was so great that when we drove threw the areas within a mile from the coast, I never saw anything like it. There were cars, refrigerators and furniture in the mangrove trees. The entire beach sand was covering the roads and yards from the gulf west to the Tamiami Trail. I vowed the I would never underestimate the power of water. And if I relocate, I will not only look at water from the perspective of the coast, but also from the perspective of the rivers and streams. Unfortunately, I feel these severe storms are our new normal! And the damage is not totally repaired . And the Atlantic and Gulf are still churning up new tropical storms. I’m sorry this happened to such a beautiful part of our country. Stay safe! Robin

  49. Oh Susan, Words fail to express my sincere grief and deeply felt sympathy for you and those affected by this catastrophic disaster. I will be sending money to samaritans purse and others that are helping. My prayers have been many and will continue. May your mind and emotions be protected as you have witnessed such tragedy. Thank you for letting us know. I care deeply.

  50. Thank you for sending this update – I am so thankful you and your family are safe. You are in my prayers, as are those affected by this terrible destruction. I know what it is like to be hit by a hurricane -we live on the gulf coast. May God be with you all.

  51. Ah, Susan, I’m so glad you’re okay. I’ve been reading your blog since way, way back and I was worried about you. I lost everything in this storm — about 5 feet of standing water in my one-story house. But I did take most of my clothes and shoes out before the storm hit and managed to salvage my jewelry and makeup as well. Could be worse!

  52. So glad you are both safe an sound. Such devastation is so very hard for us to comprehend here in Canada. We watched the News coverage with horror. Thinking of you and Mr. Mickey and sending our prayers.

  53. Dear Susan and M. Mickey,
I do imagine how it must be so hard being surrounded by such a catastroph.
Here, in France, all the TVs, radios, newspapers, speak about North Carolina situation.
We think of you very much.
Fortunately, you are both safe, and your house too (I wondered about it).
    Love,
    Hélène

  54. So glad that you and your immediate family are safe Susan. We have been thinking of people in your area. Hang in there and know that many care about you.

  55. Dearest Susan and Mr Mickey you have so been on my mind watching the destruction Hurricane Helene has caused shown on U.K. news. It’s hard to comprehend such a powerful force of nature can cause devastation to communities.
Thank God you are both safe and your families. How thoughtful of you to put out this post to let all your readers you are both safe . My heart goes out to all those who have lost everything and the loss of human life .
Stay safe both of you ,
    With love Pamela UK xx

  56. I am so glad to hear you are safe. My heart breaks for all those who have lost loved ones and homes and livelihoods. Praying God’s strength, courage, and peace for every life and family as well as the practical necessities of life needed immediately.

  57. So glad to hear you and your loved ones are safe! The feeling that you may be experiencing is called survivor’s guilt. It can hit hard after major disasters. Take care of yourself. Praying for you and all affected by this tragedy! ❤️

  58. So glad I found you today in my Internet search, and to know that you and your family are doing as well as possible.
Prayers for you and your neighboring area. This will certainly take time, courage and patience. The goodness in people will prevail.

  59. We’ve been seeing the devastation from here in NZ. So thankful you and your family are safe. Am praying for everyone who has been affected. My brothers house was flooded in a large weather event back in 2015 and I know how awful it was for them. It’s shocking and takes a while to get through it.

  60. What a tragedy for so many. I am glad you are safe. My heart goes out to everyone who is going through this devastation. Times like these remind me of what is truly important in life.
    Stay safe .

  61. So grateful you and yours are safe. Praying hard for the lives and property that have been lost. This is a true American tragedy. God please hear our prayers. A Grammy in Delaware

  62. Thinking of you from Australia and relieved that you and your family are safe. I thought of you immediately when I heard that Tennessee was affected, but had no idea of the extent of the devastation. Heartbreaking.

  63. So glad to hear you and Mr Mickey are safe! I was very concerned about all the bad weather you were getting. Thank you for letting us know that you guys are ok!

  64. So thankful you are safe. The scenes of the devastation are shocking. Continued prayers for all struggling in the aftermath of the hurricane.

  65. So glad you’re safe. Will pray for the many who are still without water, food, electricity and shelter. God bless!

  66. I am so glad to hear from you. I’ve heard harrowing reports of your area. I live on the southeast Texas coast, so I am all too familiar with hurricanes, their flooding and the devastation they can bring. (Rita, Ike, Harvey are our recent ones). Please know that our prayers are with you and your family and the entire affected area.

  67. My son and his fiancé live in Leicester close to Weaverville. Although they didn’t have electricity or cell coverage for two days, they now have it and they have a well for water. They are so fortunate compared to the devastation everywhere else. Words can’t describe it.

Since interstate 40 is out, we will be coming up through Johnson City and Greenville and then heading down the other roads to get to them for Thanksgiving.

  68. So pleased you and your family are safe.,we have been watching your terrible weather from England. Keep the faith! All will be well

  69. I’ve been watching the news from afar as currently travelling in Japan from Australia and was devastated to see the names of some towns that I’m so familiar with from reading your blog. I can’t imagine what you’re all going through and how your lives have been affected by this disaster.
I wish you all the very, very best as you and your friends, family and neighbours begin to rebuild your communities.

  70. Thank you for updating all of us. I feel so sad for all the people so impacted by this hurricane, but relieved you are safe.

  71. Hope…..thinking of you, Mr. Mickey and your families. Thankful you are doing well. Our visit to Asheville/Biltmore is one of our best memories we will treasure forever. A beautiful area. “Hope” is a good word today for this devastation.

  72. Thank you for this post. I have been concerned about you and the people in your area since Friday morning. My grandson goes to college in Banner Elk, NC. He was able to drive out in a four wheel drive truck, all students are now off campus but some had to be airlifted by the national guard. I live in the foothills of NC and people near me still do not have power or water. My heart hurts for the people who have lost everything and are cut off due to bridge and road failures.

  73. Susan: This has to go down as one of the worst hurricanes in recorded history. I live in Houston and have been through several hurricanes, living only 30 miles from Galveston Bay. The damage and loss of lives is so brutal. I am glad you and Mr. Mickey are ok. Stay safe.

  74. Having just visited these affected areas 6 months ago, it’s shocking to see the destruction. So appreciative of you letting us know that you are all ok. Blessings.

  75. You’re all in our prayers. I literally was just thinking I wonder how Susan is and so I go to your page to email you and I see this post (I didn’t see it in my in box oddly enough maybe it’ll come later tonight). Thanks for the update and know we’re thinking of you. We just drove through this area a couple weeks ago in route to Charlotte NC.

  76. The devastation leaves no words. Wonderful that you are physically safe though obviously affected by the conditions around you. Daily thoughts for those affected.

  77. Thank you for updating us, I’ve been worried about the two of you, as I’m sure all of your readers have been. My prayers go out to all of the people devastated by this terrible hurricane.

  78. Susan, I’ve been thinking and praying that you and Mikey were ok. It’s so sad to see the destruction this hurricane has brought. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I’m so glad you reached out, thank you. Hugs hugs

  79. Hi Susan,
So glad to get this update….I have thought of you and wondered if you were caught in the flooding. This is a
terrible situation and I pray that there will be tremendous support for recovery of the whole area. Mother
    Nature can be frightful!
Sending wishes for peace and love to you and yours.

  80. I am so relived that you and Mr. Mickey and your family are safe. All the devastating storms are heartbreaking. Years ago when we lived in the Houston area we went through a cat. 3 hurricane. An experience I hope I never have again.
I enjoy your blogs. Right now your time and energy needs to be focused on your well-being and safety. Please keep us updated. Stay safe and healthy.

  81. I am glad you are safe we have only seen the destruction in Florida on our news and that is so hard to comprehend I will keep you all in my prayers.

  82. Thank you for the update! Thankful you are safe. It breaks my heart to see so much that has been lost. Praying for those who have been affected by this terrible devastation

  83. Thank you so much for updating us. I know it is hard to conceive now but there is indeed hope. I lived through Superstorm Sandy in 2012 where my entire neighborhood was devastated. It is unimaginable. But there is a future and very slowly everyone will get there. But you will never look at the world quite the same again because you have seen such devastation. Sending strength and prayers to all who now need to rebuild their lives.

  84. So glad you and your family are safe. It is so hard to see the devastation of this beautiful area. We have visited often as our daughter lived in Hendersonville. We pray for the Lord to give stength, courage and grace to all who endured this disaster, the first responders and volunteers.

  85. I am so glad that you fared ok. We are in Greenwood SC and although we did not have the severe flooding, we had severe destructive winds. We also were fortunate with only minimal damage while most of my neighbors had severe damage. 99 percent of the town residents are without power.

  86. So glad you and your immediate family are safe are well. I was so relieved to get your post. You have been in my thoughts…

  87. Dear Susan, I’m very relieved to hear that you are safe and have power. It has to be so terrible to see and hear about all the suffering around you. You have my sympathy.

  88. Oh my dear..
Words cannot express how bad I feel about your situation .
The only blessing is that you and your loved ones survived .
Sending lots of hugs and love from Canada . Try to stay strong
And believe it will get better❤️

  89. Bless you. We’ll continue to pray for all of you . When fires destroyed some of our favorite places in the mountains I grieved. Neither I nor my granddaughters will see heir glory in a lifetime.
    Stay safe.

  90. I have been thinking about you and Mr. Mickey. This hurricane seemed to bring such devastating damage miles after reaching land. The power of nature is all-consuming. One day at a time, and continue being safe and taking care of each other, family, and friends.

  91. Thank you for letting us know that you and Mr. Mickey are safe. My daughter lives just south of Nashville and is an ICU nurse at Vanderbilt. She hasn’t mentioned any problems with their area. The last time our power, here in north GA, we looked at it as an adventure. Candlelight, smores in the fireplace,, etc. . . . I can’t imagine having no power for months and roads out. I will keep everyone in my prayers tonight.

  92. So thankful that you are safe and have what you need. Thoughts and prayers to those affected. Cannot even begin to imagine.

  93. Dear Susan and Mr. Mickey,
It’s so upsetting when you go through this type of life experience. I think it changes you forever.
I’m relieved to know you both are okay, your parents, family, and friends. It’s gives you peace of mind to know you have food and the basic necessities to get by.
Life is so very precious, each day is a gift.
The communities all remain in my thoughts. It’s so difficult to get through times like this. Hopefully everyone that can, will lend a helping hand to those in immediate need.
I should probably assume there will be no mail delivery for a period of time.
    Sending you warm hugs,
    Your friend Katherine

  94. Dearest Susan and Mr. Mickey,
Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know how you are faring during this extremely devastating time. I know when I read about the hurricane and it’s aftermath in your area as well as all of north and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, I have prayed so hard that you and your loved ones would be safe. Please know that though so many of us can’t physically be there to assist, we are your prayer warriors. Stay strong. It is so difficult when all around you things are not what they have been. But I know that your resilience, strength,
courage, and your faith will get you through this demanding time. Know that my prayers and the prayers of many will continue not just for today, but for many weeks and months ahead that you will be facing. Sending our love and praying that you feel all of our support every moment. With sincerest and heartfelt thanks for your well-being , and gratitude to God for his blessings.
Love and hugs to you both
    Mimi

  95. Happy to know you are safe. We have relatives in Western NC and heard tonight they are safe. Thank you for the news link, too. I, like so many others, have donated to Samaritan’s Purse to help them provide much needed assistance.

  96. Thank you, Susan for letting us hear from you. I have been waiting and hoping that we would. So glad that you and your family are safe and well. Take good care and remember that this, to, shall pass. I have been in your situation a few times and truly feel for you. God bless you and yours.

  97. Praying for your continued safety and well being. My heart and concern for all affected folks. Praying that helps comes swiftly.

  98. I am glad —relieved— that you are OK, Susan. So many people are devastated. I know your community will pull together to help each other and that the nation Will come to your aid. This is what community is for. Stay Safe and have hope.

    Mary

  99. Oh Susan, I am so glad you and yours are safe.
The weather now is terrifying. On steroids. This will become the norm I think. I do hope that power and services will be restored in due course so that not too many individuals and businesses are affected.
    Take care…

  100. Thank you for letting us know you are ok. I am so sad for the people lost and the homes destroyed. I know I would be devastated if all this had happened to me or my loved ones.

  101. Thank you for updating us!! You’ve been on my mind. The devastation is just awful and so many lives lost. Loved the link to the video about dad walking to his daughter’s wedding. Prayers for you all!

  102. Hello Susan,
I am so relieved that you and your family are safe, I can’t begin to imagine how you must be feeling, this sort of devastation takes not only months and months to repair but the long lasting trauma it puts on people who are affected by this too. I know words do not cover the upset you must all be feeling and trying to explain and reassure your elderly parents that they will be ok will be a daily task for some time but with your strength and positive attitude both you and Mr Mickey will come through this and the community you live in will support one another, we will all be thinking of you and thankyou for letting everyone know how you are all doing

  103. Sending you love and hopes for those around you.
Here in New Zealand we too have had some terrible winter weather events. It brings communities closer together.
There is still so much uncertainty and it takes time to build up homes and lives again.
    Be well,
    Carolyn

  104. Oh my goodness, Susan, – I confess my knowledge of the geography of the states in the US is not my strong point.
Our England news has shown the devastation but I had not linked it to being so close by for you. It must be truly horrifying – we humans are mere puppets in the forces of nature. My thoughts and prayers are with all of yoiu affected both physically and mentally.
    Stay strong
    Carol

  105. Dear Susan and Mr. Micky, this is terrible, this devastation! I am so sorry .
I am glad that you and your family are ok.

I will pray for you and your loved ones and everyone who is stricken and overwhelmed.
May God bless you all and be with you . Jolanda

  106. As a long-time follower who is your age, I am sending my heartfelt relief that you and your family are safe. For those in the areas of devastation, I pray for speedy relief from the nightmare from FEMA and other federal, state, and local authorities. My family has enjoyed long and short-term travel to areas devastated on the FL Gulf Coast through your area. We have wept at seeing photos and videos of the destruction. Thank you for the update and please continue to remain safe.

  107. I’m so glad you and your family were spared. I immediately thought of you when this tragedy occurred. I can’t wrap my head around this.

  108. I am glad that you are safe. This is so devastating it’s hard to comprehend. I will keep you and everyone affected, in my thoughts. Take care, Marylou

  109. Thank you Susan, especially for reaching out to all those who are concerned about their loved ones’ safety and are unable to contact them. Our prayers are for so many victims of this devastating disaster as well as all those suffering from the fires out west.

  110. I am so glad you, Mr Mickey and your family are all safe. My country went through it twice in the last year along with a terrible earthquake not long before. It is hard to comprehend the scale of destruction and the many years it takes to even approach normality. Every time it rains heavily people here dread what might happen. Stay safe.

  111. Thank-you for the update that you and your family are safe. Such devastation. My thoughts and prayers are with all the people affected by this tragedy.

  112. I am so glad you’re safe! My brother and brother-in-law live in Asheville and I finally heard from them Monday. Thankfully, they are also safe. They have generators so have limited power but no water, internet or cell service. He has no idea of the devastation throughout the area that we see on the news because they can’t travel far from their neighborhood. It is truly heartbreaking. Stay safe and know that friends throughout the country are praying for everyone affected.

  113. Thank-you for the update that you & your family are safe. Such devastation. My thoughts & prayers are with all the people affected by this tragedy.

  114. It is good to read that you along with your friends and family are ok. I have a close friend who lives in Piney Flats and have been checking in with her as well. Since I am from Tennessee (presently living in Indiana near my son) I visited Gatlinburg and Nashville several times. My heart is just devastated for everyone. On may prayer list…thanks for the update Susan and stay safe!

  115. Rezo para que la ayuda llegue pronto y todo vuelva a la normalidad lo antes posible.
    Con todo mi cariño.
    Manoly

  116. I am so glad to hear you are safe. My parents lived in Hendersonville NC for many years. It is beautiful country. We love the Biltmore Estate. I hope that it was not damaged too much.

I have never seen that much devastation. My heart goes out to all those affected. Stay safe.

    Kathy

  117. Susa, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. This journey for so many is devastating but many many people are praying and working for you. Take care,

    Jan

  118. So happy to hear you are safe. It’s heartbreaking seeing the photos and watching the news about North Carolina. My daughter lives in Chapin, South Carolina- near Lake Murray. Her power was restored yesterday after being out since last Thursday. Many states have been sending trucks with teams of electricians and engineers to help with restoring power. Americans continue to pray for recovery in the badly affected southern states.

  119. Thankful you and your loved ones are safe. It is unimaginable the devestation that we see on tv. We continue our prayers for all that we’re in the path of the hurricane.

  120. Thank you for your thoughtful and encouraging note Susan. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who are affected by the terrible devastation.

  121. So glad!!! I didn’t have electricity or phone or water for a few days and no Internet but I was concerned about friends up your way. Glad to hear you are ok, except for the heartache we are all feeling and gratefulness for things we often take forgranted.
God bless! Good to hear from you.
    Molly

  122. Susan, I am so glad to know you and your family are safe! Our North Carolina family is safe as well. My prayers are lifted up for help and comfort for everyone in the affected region.

  123. Susan, you have been in my thoughts, and I am glad to know you and your family are physically safe. We have family in North Carolina, and they are safe also. Our hearts are broken for the devastation and loss, and our prayers continue for help and comfort for everyone in the region.

  124. Dearest friend, my heart goes out to everyone affected by this horrific event. The damage that we sustained from Beryl is nothing in comparison to what has happened where you are. I was so grateful to see your email this morning and see that you are okay.
Praying for strength and love for all those affected

  125. I have been thinking of you and praying for you and Mr. Mickey. So happy to get this message that you are safe.
My friends and I were scheduled to visit Ashville in November-so hard to see the devastation of such a beautiful area.

I live in suburb of Tampa and we didn’t have damage-coast was decimated..
Continued prayers for you and all there.
    Sue Williams

  126. Susan, so glad you and Mr Mickey are safe. I’ve been thinking about you. It’s hard for me to imagine what the folks of Easten TN and Western NC are going through. Keep well!

  127. So glad you and your loved ones are safe.. We have a friend near Green Mountain who is totally cut off along with her three neighbors. They managed to send out a satellite message yesterday. Like you, safe for now, but will need to be rescued, like so, so, many others. So thankful and greatful you all are safe. Sending massive love and hugs to you and yours

  128. So happy you let us know! I was wondering about you. Savannah, Georgia is starting to put itself back together. Had to go to the doc this morning and was surprised at the damage and mess even after days of clean up. No traffic lights always makes for a challenging driving experience. Hope things improve for everyone.

  129. I so enjoy visiting the Asheville/Boone/Blowing Rock area; the extent of devastation is just overwhelming and hard to comprehend. I pray for those affected, as their lives will forever be changed. I encourage anyone who can to please donate to one of the legitimate associations offering aid to the area. Even if it is only $5, I know it will be appreciated. Susan, I am thankful you and your family are well. Please know that the Tennessee/North Carolina area will be in my prayers for months. Take care—

  130. Thank you Susan for letting us all know you are safe with power food and water. Sending love and gratitude for all you do for us. We are holding you and all people affected in the light and love of all that is good.
    Blessings,
    Lee Aten

  131. Prayers for you and your family and all of your friends and all the people affected by this horrible storm. Thank you for the update.

  132. Susan I’m so relieved to receive your post this morning letting us all know that you are safe! When I heard about the destruction in Asheville and Tennessee and especially in North and South Carolina, my first thoughts went to you. I have enjoyed so many of your travel stories and pictures that my heart was broken for that area even though I have never been there. My husband and I were looking forward to visiting Asheville, I can’t even imagine what you’re going through. Just know there are many of us out here who care about you though we have never met you, and are hoping and believing and praying that you will be kept strong and safe. I believe God has protected so many from what could have been worse if that is even possible.
    My prayers are with you.
    Mary Scarpa Holstrom

  133. So glad you are safe! Erwin and Unicoi county is where many of my ancestors came from. Devasting the destruction.

  134. Dear Susan,
I’m so glad you and Mr. Mickey and your family are safe. Have wondered about you, but I am dealing with a critically ill family member so I did not email but I prayed for you. Thank you for letting us know you are safe. This is so catastrophic and terrible in my heart goes out to all who are affected.

  135. So glad you and your loved ones are okay. I live on the west coast of Florida (about halfway up the state) and we didn’t get any damage here. I never would have thought further north and inland would be hit so hard. Be safe.

  136. Dearest Susan,

You are the first person brought to mind when I heard about the crushing devastation in your region. Your touching note—which I’m sure was heart wrenching to compose—lets us all know that you are okay and there really is hope.
With prayers and donations we can all help those whose lives have been shattered.
    Sharon White, Texas
    Quintessential Style

  137. I have thought about you and Mr. Mickey throughout the past week and prayed for y’all. I have family in south Georgia and close friends in Brevard, NC that are also reeling from the devastation. I’m so heartbroken for everyone. Happy to know y’all are good.

  138. Susan, it is so good to hear that you are well and safe. What has happened is catastrophic, and many of us feel helpless because we know a lot of people are in a desperate situation, and we are not able to help them. Tragedy often brings out the best in (most) people, and neighbors are helping neighbors. There will likely be volunteer opportunities in the future, and opportunities to donate to organizations that will help the victims. Right now it is best to stay put and let the professionals do their jobs to search, rescue, restore and rebuild. This is the time when volunteers could hamper their efforts.

We live in northwest South Carolina. The northeast quadrant of the eye wall of Helene went over us as a tropical storm with 70 mph sustained winds (for reference, sustained winds of 71 mph is a Category 1 hurricane) and gusts of 86 mph. The storm came through while it was still dark, and many people were still asleep. Large downed trees are everywhere, blocking roads and driveways. Some people lost their lives in South Carolina when large trees fell on their houses. Power line poles have been snapped in half. Power lines were taken down by downed trees.

Not only are the power lines down, but transmission towers and sub stations have been impacted. Restoring this infrastructure could take a long time. There is a very real possibility that we could be without power for a very long time,

Who knew that cell towers run on electricity? Initially the cell towers were supported by backup generators. But backup generators are not designed to run indefinitely. By Sunday, our cell service had failed. As of this morning, cell service has been stored.

The Internet also failed. Our service is through T-Mobile, so we lost service when the towers failed. Cell service was restored yesterday.

We have a whole house generator that runs on natural gas. It has been so much better than the portable generators that run on gasoline. Owners of those generators have spent hours waiting in line at the few gas stations that are open to get gas to keep their generators running. Some people have propane tanks and generators that run on propane. They have to have their propane tanks refilled to keep their generators running. But our generator has its limitations as well. Our natural gas generator has to receive maintenance after 100 hours of use. We are operating over the 100 hours. We are working with the maintenance company, who is trying to obtain a needed part. In the meantime, we are only running our generator 6-8 hours a day. The weather has been cooler here in South Carolina, so we have been able to keep the house comfortable and refrigerated food cold.

But these are not our only challenges. All that water in places like Asheville, NC, will be coming down river to South Carolina. Projected crests on some of our rivers is forecast to be at least double flood stage. While that is not expected to affect us personally, effects of Hurricane Helene are not over yet for the state of South Carolina.

Clearly, we are not experiencing the same level of difficulties that parts of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and other parts of South Carolina are facing, This is just intended as a snapshot of how other areas have been affected by Hurricane Helene.

  139. I’m so relieved to hear that you and Mr. Mickey are safe. I am astounded at the devastation. My heart is with you all at this difficult time.
    Melissa

  140. I AM PRAYING FOR YOU Susan and all who are suffering. May God richly comfort you and your family with his great comfort.

  141. I thank God that you are safe and send prayers to those in the surrounding communities. It’s such beautful country and has been forever changed.

  142. So happy you are safe! This is so tragic. We were to arrive in Ashville on October 21st. Feeling disappointed but mostly feeling so sad for everyone that lives there. My husband pointed out that should we have altered our plans, we could have been there ourselves. So scary. We love to travel but have only been able to once a year. Who would have ever thought that Ashville would have fallen victim to the remnants of a hurricane! Last year we were in Florida at this time!

  143. Prayers for all devastated by the hurricane. It will take time & much effort to build back what is lost. Judith

  144. Thank you for sharing this. Hard to imagine if you haven’t seen/ lived this. Savannah GA was hit harder than any expected. Praying for all ❤️

  145. So glad to hear you and yours are safe. Thank you for writing. Yes it is traumatizing. Florida – part time resident here. We are now leaving upstate NY Friday by car. Dreading the travel. I too take our nation’s troubles to heartn

  146. Dear Susan and Mr. Mickey,
the candle of hope is burning in a warm light. This evening I will light a candle in my hometown Munich and my thoughts will go to all living beings affected by this natural disaster. There is an ocean between us, but empathy is without borders. Many thanks for “susanafter60.com”, which means much more to me than styling tips only.
With kindest regards, yours Herta Urban

  147. So glad you and Mr. Mickey and your family are safe and secure!. We have no idea of when life will be back to even a semblance of normal. We have a generator, which is such a blessing, but being cut off from ALL communication is hard. We’re in a hotel in Charlotte for at least a week. But the more we learn about the level of the complete breakdown of cell towers, water sources, and power outages, we realize life as we know it is going to be challenging. But we are so blessed that our home wasn’t damaged. We are praying for so many who are suffering. That picture of Erwin is heartbreaking.

  148. We here south Ga.had power and cell service restored yesterday evening.I am glad to here that you are ok.

  149. Thank God, you are safe Susan. When I saw the devastation is Asheville I immediately thought of you. We visited that beautiful town en route from Florida one year and I enjoyed all the trips you shared with us there. Your title for the blog today “Hope” is inspiring. Thank you for this.
    Felicity

  150. Susan, I like others, thought about you right away, knowing that you live in TN and remembering how many times you’ve spoken about Asheville. You are so kind to post this and let everyone know, even though we’ve never met, that you’re safe. So glad to hear from you.
We are praying for everyone affected by this devastating storm. It’s horrific.
Helene was my mother’s name. (she just passed at 102 last year). My son just moved to Tampa, so when Hurricane “Helene” was predicted to hit Florida, and originally the Tampa area, we just couldn’t believe it.
No one expected so much damage inland. Continue to be safe Susan.

  151. Very thankful y’all are safe. This level of devastation is unprecedented in our country. Prayers going up for all those affected by Helene and for the first responders.

  152. Thank you for letting us know you and your immediate family are okay. 17 miles is mighty close to you!!!!!
What devastation around your area is too much a reminder to us on what happened in Iowa with the nasty tornado that whipped through our state destroying towns and people losing their lives.. You are right, no words can truly explain the havoc and destruction that occurs when something like that happens, especially so close by to boot..
Prayers are being said through churches, individuals and groups for all who have been affected by this tragedy.
Take care and thank you for keeping us informed about you and the people around you.
    Clara from Iowa

  153. I’m so glad to hear you and your family are safe. It’s hard to comprehend the magnitude of the devastation. Even with complete mobilization it’s clear it will be many months before power, roads and infrastructure can be restored. We on the west coast have endured fires and earthquakes but this hurricane has been even more devastating than any one of our disasters. Praying for all the victims. And your continued safety.

  154. Thank you for your update, Susan. I was fortunate to visit the Asheville area last spring, and saw the wonder and beauty of the area. My heart and prayers go to all impacted by this devastation.

    Sending hugs,

    Helen

  155. Thank You for letting us know you are okay! I have family in Sparta, TN which was untouched. I follow Appalachia’s Homestead with Patara on YouTube. com. Patara lives and homesteads near Knoxville. She and her husband have been volunteering in Erwin and surrounding areas video recording the experience to share with others if you want to watch. Again, thankful to hear you are safe. Will continue to pray and find ways to help from here in Michigan!

  156. Glad that you are safe! Thank you for sharing. We are thinking of you in the east as another storm heads there. I have in-laws and family in Greenville SC and Virginia, and grateful that they have missed much of the damage as well.

  157. So happy that you and Mr. Mickey are safe, as well as your mom and dad. I have been reading about the man who was headed from South Carolina to his daughter’s wedding in Johnson City, and encountered road closures and told by state troopers that he could drive no further. This father hiked thirty miles so he could walk his daughter down the aisle. His description of the conditions on the way is heartbreaking.

  158. So glad you’re safe. Absolutely heart wrenching devastation! Also mixed with a little anger on how long it took some people to even see anyone that could help them. Bethany Frankel had helped there before the government! I’m disappointed in our administration. Real eye awakening moment.

  159. Thank you for sharing that you and your loved ones are safe. I previously lived in many of the places that suffered much damage. Military service brought us to Memphis and tornado threats are frequent. Everywhere we have been stationed Mother Nature can take control. Prayers for our fellow Tennessean’s.

  160. Susan,
I’m so thankful that you are safe. I cannot imagine the trauma of such event.
Praying for you and all impacted by this devastating event.

    Prayerfully,
    Vickie

  161. Dear Susan,
Thank you for the update. I was concerned about you. Thank God for protecting you so well. Praying for those less fortunate.
    Mary

  162. As a resident of Houston, I am painfully familiar with the devastation of hurricanes and subsequent flooding. I am pleased to hear you and your family are among the fortunate ones who didn’t differ serious damage. My thoughts are with the people of Asheville.

  163. Sending much love prayers and support to you and the communities affected. We have been watching on TV, YouTube, and thru friends too. It is horrendous what is happening. We have a close friend driving from SC up there with 5-gallon fresh water jugs trailers to help. Be Safe

  164. Me alegra que usted y su familia estén bien en medio de este evento catastrófico.
Le envío un fuerte abrazo, admirada Susan.
    L. Loaiza

  165. Thanks for letting us know you are safe, Susan. May those affected by the storm receive as soon as possible the assistance they need.

  166. Very glad we and your family are well. I have been thinking of you and praying for you all. Thank you for the update. Will continue to pray for a speedy recovery for all

  167. Susan so glad you and Mr. Mickey are ok and have power. Northeast Tennessee and Western North Carolina, so sad.

  168. Thanks for the update and that you are safe. Prayers to all that are affected by this terrible storm. ❤️

  169. I’m so thankful that you and Mr. Mickey are okay, Susan! My heart aches for all who are dealing with so much devastation!

  170. So thankful you and immediate area are somewhat good. It is terrible situation. Love and prayers for all affected. I am in FL and we are amazingly safe also.

  171. So happy to see your update. The devastation is unimaginable. We had an EF4 tornado go through my town years ago…the landscape is forever changed and it will never be the same….that is hard to shake off because it’s in one’s face every day. It is impossible to begin to imagine how you and everyone is your area must feel. My heart goes out to all of you. I hope the outpouring of concern and help will be of some comfort to you all.

  172. Dear Susan, As a Katrina survivor formerly from New Orleans, I feel your pain. We didn’t find our cousin until seven months after the storm. He was severely injured and eventually died from those injuries. He had been airlifted to a hospital eight hours away. So if you are missing someone, don’t give up. They may be far away from their home but not identified. While I lost my home and my husband his employer, nothing compares to the loss of friends and family. Prayers for everyone who has been affected by this devastating storm. Nikki

  173. Thank you Susan ..
this world has so many things going on it sometimes makes us wonder what can happen next ? I feel the perfect answer for me is God sees and knows and cares he is watching over us just like we watch and care for our families and loved ones Gods plan has been totally written out the day Jesus died on cross to save us all what a selfless thing he did that day ..
please know churches and families are praying for all that are hurting and in distress. We are praying for this country it is such a mess but God has got that and his plan will always work out in the end.,
I enjoy your post so much I enjoy your outfits and messages concerning how you eat healthy.. I somehow lost track of you for a short time but am on board again., Thank you so much God Bless you and your family ..
    sincerely
    J. H.

  174. Have been praying for you and yours, as well as all affected by this storm. As a resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I have lived through devastating storms (Katrina and Camille), so I have deep empathy for the conditions surrounding you. Thanking God for the provisions you have. I remember the sense of hopelessness in the early days when you realize it will take time to recover, even the most critical of services. There will be many, many Good Samaritans that will provide assistance, encouragement, and renewed hope.

  175. Glad you are safe! We just vacationed in Lake Lure 3 weeks ago, went to Chimney Rock, The Biltmore, etc. The drive from Lake Lure to Asheville was along a twisting, windy mountain road…I can only imagine the vast devastation this storm has caused….my heart bleeds for all impacted, and we have donated to recovery efforts, and pray for people and animal safety.

  176. Thank you for letting us know you’re safe. Prayers for everyone who has been affected by this. Stay safe. Stay strong.

  177. Thank you for your post letting us know you are safe. That said, many are not and have been devastated. Many ways to help those affected…seek reputable avenues to do so if you are able. Charity Navigator has a curated list. Love, light and peace to all.

  178. So glad you and your family are safe.
Prayers will continue for all those going through this difficult time.

  179. Dear Susan,
The damage in your area is heartbreaking and widespread. I live in Houston and our recent hurricane did a lot of damage even though it was only a category 1.
I do enjoy reading your posts. They are informative and always well-written. I especially liked your recent entry about what you eat most days.
I’m sorry for what has happened in your area. Stay hopeful and stay safe.
    Best,
    Linda

  180. Hi Susan, my thoughts and prays are with you and everyone who has been effected by the bad weather that has caused such devastation the last few days. Please keep safe and be careful.

    God Bless
    ELIZABETH SA

  181. So good to hear you’re OK Susan. I don’t think most of us realize how bad things are. We are getting some news, but not like we should and I don’t know why!!!! Georgieanne

  182. So sad about the lives lost and the tremendous devastation. Happy that you and yours are safe. Take care.

  183. Thank you for posting that you are safe. Hard to believe when we see Asheville on the news what it looks like. We visited there 3 years ago and it was so lush and so many restaurants to choose from. Prayers go out to all affected.
Our prayers go out to first responders who help when others are fleeing the area. My husband was a paramedic, firefighter and deputy chief and our family is always thinking about the ones that go to help.

Stay safe and glad you and Mr. Mickey and your family are OK.
    Patty V

  184. Dear Susan, Thank you for taking a moment to touch base. I follow you and Mr Mickey from Australia, which seems a world away, I know. I really admire the way you enjoy life, and I hope you and your loved ones remain safe. I see your President and others promising help. I hope they remain true to their word!

  185. So happy you and your immediate family are safe! Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this devastation!

  186. Thank you so much for letting us know that you and yours are safe. I, like so many, have thought of you so often in the last few days. This storm is heartbreaking.

  187. Thank you for your lovely post Susan, so glad you are safe. Up here in Alberta, Canada we have been watching the devastation unfold, and it is truly heartbreaking. Take good care.

  188. I viaited friends in Waynesville NC last week, on Wednesday we visited Biltmore to see the Chihuly exhibit, I was scheduled to fly home to Florida on Friday. Of course, that was impossible. After Helene passed, electricity and cell service was out. The road to the cell phone tower was flooded and covered by downed trees.

My friends have a whole house generator and had 4 full propane tanks, so we had lights and tv but no way to communicate.

The damage in the area can not completely be appreciated from photos and news reports.

Anyone thinking of driving through the area should be aware – gasoline lines, as of Sunday, were extremely long and gas was rationed at some locations. Also gas stations amd restaurants were cash only.

Asheville airport was closed and my friends drove me to Knoxville via 74 & 129 (including the 11 mile Tail of the Dragon). I was able to get a flight to Orlando.

  189. Thank you for letting us followers know that you are safe. We are so totally appalled and upset by the devastation in eastern Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Our prayers are with you and we join millions of others in sending financial support & whatever else we can do to help those in need. It is overwhelming and so very sad.

  190. Susan, what a dreadful experience! So relieved to hear you’re both safe. Thank you so much for the update.
Please update all us of who think so highly of you and wish you both the very best.

  191. I have truly worried about y’all so much! Relieved to find out you two are physically okay. Prayers for all

  192. I always find it amusing when your readers refer to your “elderly” parents, never realizing that Mr. Mickey is as old as your father.

I am just happy that everyone is doing well. It is a terrible situation for all.

  193. I’m glad you are safe. Many people lost everything and lives. A very sad situation.
    Thanks for sharing.

  194. So glad to hear you are all right. We, in Tallahassee, were mostly very lucky. There is much to overcome around the area— but we will catch our breaths, and roll up our sleeves! And may God be with all those who were not so lucky!

  195. Praying that you and yours are able to heal emotionally and mentally. I have been through flooding. It is beyond devastating.

  196. Sending you love and best wishes from Wales
keep your spirits up and stay safe
    So glad you are okay

  198. Dearest Ones, thanking God fpr your safety. It is dreadful, and do have friends nearby. Prayers and wishes for you of continued safety and good health.

  199. So glad you are safe, sending prayers to many others. We have been to the NC mountains many times having lived in Charlotte yeas ago. So sad….

  200. Susan,

I thought of you as soon as I heard about the devastation. So glad you are okay but understand the effects something this horrific has on your heart.

You and all the victims are in my prayers.

    Sincerely,
    Marcia Wielenga

  201. I immediately thought of you and Mr. Mickey when I heard of the devastation. I had to check to see where Johnson City was. Thankful you are okay. ❤️

  202. This devastation is hard to comprehend. so glad your family is safe. Praying for those souls who lost their lives.

  203. Thankful you are ok, and grateful that you sent this. Prayers for help to arrive soon to those facing damages.

  204. Dear Susan, so glad you are both safe. Having been through a quake that wrecked our city may I suggest some ways to help your folks in North Carolina?

    1. Cellphone coverage will be patchy and their ability to recharge phones very limited, so act as their one point of contact for all family and friends, rather than having them try to answer messages from mulitple sources.

    2. Monitor their state and federal disaster relief agencies and city websites for updates. My brother 12,000 miles did this and we got more info from him than any local agency as communications around us broke down.

    3. Top up affected family phones in the disaster zone by logging onto their telco site and adding credit to their calling plans.

    regards, Gail

  205. So, sorry about the terrible destruction of the southern states. I have lived in Georgia for over 40 years and know the good people of the South will make it, but in the meantime, my prayers are with your friends and family.
    Bev

  206. So very sorry so many are struggling through this very difficult time.
Happy to hear you are safe.
Sending prayers and hugs that you stay safe and recovery in your area can be swift.

  207. I feel so bad for all those affected and hope they all get the help needed band more. Thank goodness you and everyone you know are safe.

  208. So thankful to hear you and yours are okay. The devastation has been difficult to comprehend, even for me a resident of south Florida. We are doing what we can to help from here… hopefully many, many people will see the need. Prayers of comfort for you and the Mr.

  209. Hi Susan, I am so relieved that you and yours are safe and have power. I have followed you for over four years and feel as though you are a part of my family. My husband Roy and I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and have weathered Camille in 1969, Katrina in 2005 and many others inbetween. We know first-hand what folks are going through and are praying for all. Thank you for the many great tips you have shared on makeup, clothing, personal etiquette, etc. I hope you will continue to share your fascinating life with me.
    Kathleen Lang
    Moss Point, Mississippi

  210. Susan, it’s great to hear you and your family and friends are well. We are seeing the devastation and know there are people suffering. I feel that we all need to come together and through prayer, be open to opportunities to help.

  211. Happy that you are safe and well. Please know that the rest of the country is praying for all of those impacted by this devastation.

  212. Dear Susan, I’ve tried several times over the years to contact you but all too often, my emails don’t get to you. You have been such a positive influence in my life with regard to style tips and the art of enjoying life. I am so grateful to you. I’m praying for the millions of folks who have been devastated by the recent two monstrous hurricanes. I’m so happy to read that you and Mr Mickey are ok and that your parents are, presumably, safe as well from hurricane damage. Please continue to stay healthy and happy.
