To Benefit Others

We recently attended ‘Spirits of the Season’ to benefit the American Cancer Society. I thought you might enjoy seeing pictures of a few of my friends who were also dressed for a special night out for a terrific cause.

Many thanks to One Stop Wines and Spirits for so generously hosting the Spirits of the Season, with all proceeds going to benefit the American Cancer Society.

My camera was not playing nicely this evening.

I wore a black velvet tuxedo style jacket and pants, which are both old from Chico’s. The earrings and bag are old from Stein Mart. The shoes are from a couple of years ago by Sam Edleman.

  1. Why do you say velvet photographs like mud? I think you look classy and beautiful. Is that a brooch that you added to the jacket or is it attached? I bet rhinestone earrings would also look nice with this outfit.

    1. Velvet always looks so flat and dull in photographs. That is actually the button that came on the jacket, not a brooch. I thought the glitzy blue earrings were a bit more updated than rhinestones.

  2. Love your blog an great advice! (I am 70)
Question: have you found anything that will take makeup out of the collar of a silk blouse without dry cleaning?
    thanks! Weatherford, TX

  3. Lovely as usual! I really like the earrings. The color near your face is a strategic element that is effective. I’m not a huge fan of wearing all black because it makes most women look washed out. But adding the large colorful earring effectively dealt with that problem. A good thing for me to remember when I want to wear a little black dress. One thing I’ve noticed lately is that your clothes fit your body well and have a pleasing proportion. I know you were working on that and I think you have been successful. Thanks for continuing to share what you learn with all of us.

  4. What a beautiful, classy outfit Susan!
You inspired me to go through my closet for evening wear that I’ve had for years, in particular a velvet tuxedo jacket and a silk moire wrap-style jacket. I found them (yeay) and a pair of tuxedo pants and slim pants in satin. Everything still fits and in fact, both pants fit better than recent styles I’ve purchased. Has anyone else experienced this – recent pant styles seem to be unflattering to my aging body, but these ones (Jax and Jones New York) which are cut to the natural waist, fall over the hip and butt without being too tight or clingy, are extremely flattering …. and no muffin top or belly bulge!! The satin pants with a sequined cami and the silk wrap jacket will be my new outfit for an upcoming event in December.
    Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

    1. The secret might be in what I eat, and I drink lots of water. I don’t wear much face makeup and I don’t put anything on my skin at night. During the day, I use Lancome Absolue moisturizer and a little coverage just around the center of my face and blend outward. Match your foundation to the upper chest to get a more natural look. Apply and blend foundation with a brush made for that.

  5. What a lovely outfit ! You look beautiful as always.

I was wondering if you could give me a make up tip. Your make up always looks perfect, and your lipstick is so flattering. I think the hardest thing for me is choosing a lipstick shade that compliments my skin tone. I have a cooler skin tone (so I’ve been told) but I just cant find a shade that looks good on me and it seems that I’ve tried hundreds. Do you have any advice ? Thank you !

    1. Try a color that is brighter not darker but with a blueish undertone. I really like a color from Merle Norman called Americana and there is another one called Cranberry. (They discontinue colors all the time but the salesperson might be able to help you find a similar one.)

    2. Mich, you might want to try Jane Iredale’s Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain. There are three colors – Forever Pink, Forever Peach, and Forever Red. It adapts to your lips. I find it easy to wear (it feels like lip balm) and all the colors look flattering on me. I started with the Forever Peach and use that one the most.
