Tank Dress 5 Ways #3

Happy 4th of July! It’s the birthday of America.

A crepe knit navy tank dress is the star of the show this week as I share how I make pieces in my wardrobe serve me well in any part of my lifestyle. Today, I am ready for a holiday cookout and fireworks.

Styling tips help me wear my basics to my advantage. Popping collars up, rolling or pushing up sleeves, half-tucking a blouse, or tying it at just the right spot can make all the difference. Here, I’ve added a lightweight, almost sheer white Portofino blouse from Express, sandals by Ralph Lauren from last year, and a no-name little red bag I purchased in a gift shop.

I always stress the importance of proportion. If I tied the blouse at my natural waistline, I would have drawn attention to how big it is. I would rather leave the waistline a mystery. I tied the blouse so that the knot is at the smallest part of my torso under the bust. The empire waistline I have created here is flattering on anyone who wants to draw attention away from the tummy area.

I hope you are enjoying this series. It continues tomorrow as I create an even more casual look using this same dress.

  1. On this 4th of July, please let me thank you for the service you gave to your country. I know this is a different holiday than Veteran’s Day, but it seems appropriate to express appreciation today as well.

  2. I am loving all of these ideas and will definitely be ordering the dress. I have a black maxi dress that I love and often wear it to travel in. So comfortable.

I have a question about the length. I think the short tank would be shorter than I want but the long one is probably going to be too long for me at 5’4” so will have to shorten it. Can you suggest where it should hit on my leg to be most attractive and not make me look shorter?

    1. If your dress stops at the most narrow part of your leg, you will always look your best. Never let the hemline of a top or dress stop at the largest portion of any part of your body.

  3. Great posts. I love them all. I was looking on your website and I wanted to know the difference between the “basic” pants and the “straight leg pants”? Thank you.

  4. Happy 4th of July!
I would be curious to see today’s look with the shirt not tied.
I have a black, sleeveless tank dress and have worn a white, ‘flowy’ shirt over it.
Even though I don’t normally wear belts because I have a thicker waistline, I did wear one with that outfit, thinking it looked appropriate with the shirt over top.
Would you wear your dress & white shirt that way – or do you think the proportion wouldn’t be right?

  5. Just ordered this dress and would like to know the best way to store your knits. Can they be hung on hangers or do you suggest folding them? I like the crepe feel of the knits. Thank you.

  6. You are very nice in this dress. You must have many dresses. Простите мой английский, я из России.

  7. Susan you look beautiful as always!! I love the blue-green top on the navy dress. But can’t find it any where. Wish I could get the pieces you have.

Happy 4th to you and Mr. Mickey.

  8. Hello, i have been following you for years. I think you are so pretty, so stylie, and so fit. I wish so much that i had a bit of that. I am in my early 70,s and would so much like to be a trendy, stylie, granny. I struggle to loose the 5 kilos i need to and i lack colour planning. So, thank you for always being there for those of us who need you. I live in new zealand so try to match your advice to what we have here. Enjoy your summer,we are in winter, and stay covid free.
    Best wishes, dee.
