Symphony Season!

October means the start of the symphony season. I always give Mr. Mickey season tickets to the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra as a Christmas gift.

Enjoying an excellent evening meal at Gourmet and Company before the performance is a tradition.

The Jilton Vegetarian is fabulous right now! We sometimes also share a piece of wild-caught grilled salmon. Mr. Mickey originated this famous dish. It has been on the menu for several years and was featured in the Tourism Guide for the state of Tennessee. The selection changes often and features the best of what is in season at the moment. Chef John has created an excellent combination of flavors.

I usually take a scarf, jacket and sometimes a coat when we attend the symphony. The evening may be enjoyable while we are having dinner. Still, it may be freezing when we leave the Mary B. Martin Auditorium in Seeger Chapel after the performance is over.

Dressing for rapidly changing temperatures while still trying to look well put together can be a challenge. Black is my go-to option for evening wear, but I attempt to create interest with different textures. The sequined sweater is a couple of years old from Saks Off 5th. The chiffon scarf is edged with black beading, and it is so old I don’t recall where I found it. The Ponte knit pants are several years old from Chico’s. The Ralph Lauren tuxedo style blazer has satin lapels, and it is from the end of the season sales last year from Dillard’s. The shoes are by BCBGeneration via Dillard’s. The reptile embossed clutch bag is one I bought from S.M. Bradford a couple of years ago while we were on Hilton Head Island.

I have the option of just wearing the sweater, or I can add the scarf to keep my neck warm. The jacket can be worn draped across my shoulders until it gets cooler. I love the look of a scarf worn trailing down your back.

Never underestimate the importance of owning separates that can be mixed and matched and dressed up or down to serve you well. I can’t imagine having the time or the desire to go shopping for every event as it comes up. Instead of shopping for clothes, I live a hectic life, so I want the clothes I already own to serve many purposes. For example, I could also wear this tuxedo jacket with a white tee and jeans and flats just as easily. The sequined sweater could work over white jeans with silver sandals. I can push up the sleeves and add a silver bracelet to wear it more casually.

  1. Stunning! – I love how dressy items of clothing can also enjoy a casual look in our day to day outfits. You & Mr. Mickey enjoy the season’s festivities! The food looks scrumptious!

  2. Yes! This is the way I want to go from now on. No more shopping for “special occasion” clothing that is worn once.

Winter means bulky outerwear where I live. That means long lines at the coat check afterwards. At one concert hall, there’s a nearby underground parkade with an indoor walkway over the street to the parkade. I put my coat, hat and gloves in the trunk of the car before entering the elevator to the walkway. It’s cold for a minute. The layers you have shown today would work well: it’s easy to take off the jacket inside the concert hall, where it is often too warm by intermission.

Those layers are important, even in winter at a certain age.

Susan, what kind of dress boots do you suggest for events like this? High? Low? Finding boots to fit over wide calves? I have been known to change into shoes in the parkade, too.

    1. I found one pair of tall boots with flat heels a couple of years ago by Vince Camuto. The back is a stretchy panel, and the rest is leather which allows me to wear a tall pair of boots finally. (The only ones I have ever owned!)

  3. Nice dressy but easy look, Susan. Love the sequined jumper. And your shoes are always amazingly clean! How do you manage not to scuff them?!
    Hope the music was good.

  4. You look FABULOUS! Love your blog posts! Thank you, so much, for all the time and effort you put into your posts. Since following your posts (starting with Fifty Not Frumpy and Facebook), I’ve realized and defined my personal style; you’re saving me money! I look forward to all your future posts!

  5. I have been following you on your blog for a while now. I love your shoes in this post! I also love your wearing leggings for evening wear. You pair them very well with jackets and scarves.

  6. Susan, You look absolutely stunning. You have learned how to put it all together and look so great. Can’t wait to see what’s on the shop page each day. Thanks so much for all your work to put this together. I would like very much to meet you some day. You are very special
