Edgy Evening

In the previous post, I shared a conservative evening look centered around the navy crepe knit basics. Today, I am showing the same basics taken in a different direction.

On Saturday evening Rowland’s Restaurant celebrated the Savor Blowing Rock Wine and Food Festival as they presented ‘An Evening with Hill Family Estate.’ The sold-out event included a Meet and Greet, along with a six-course dinner paired with lovely wines from The Hill Family Estate.

The shoes are by INC International Concepts, created for Macy’s last year. The bag is also several years old. I purchased the black and blue reptile embossed biker style jacket at Stein Mart about five years ago.

Follow along for the rest of the week to see how I style the same separates in other ways.

  1. I would like to see you discuss the pros and cons of different types of sleeves (set-in, raglan, full-fashioned, etc.) and also collar treatments on jackets (notched, mandarin, shawl) for different body types. For some reason, a shawl collar or cocoon sweater never look good on me (somewhat softly-rounded, short shape).

  2. This navy outfit is a knockout and a welcome change from special occasion black. I love this biker jacket. You look great!

  3. Susan, YOU ROCK!!! Who else could wear such an edgy look? Oh, the rest of us if we had the confidence. You just showed us how to add edge while still following your “rules”. Well done you!

  4. Like the outfit……love navy ……a scarf would have topped it! Hope the dinner folding chairs were comfortable. My first “check out” as I enter a longer formal dinner event is always seating…..preferably upholstered. Hope you enjoyed yourself and your companions!!!!!!

  5. I can wear navy but black around my face is deadly. Thanks for sharing how to wear the two together. You looked fabulous for your event!

  6. You look fabulous! Months ago, I purchased the navy pants and top from your online shop. I have a special occasion this month so I appreciate seeing you in them. So many options. I am amazed at how many outfits you create. I never think “column dressing” when I see your creations. I just see the silhouette, details and accessories. As someone mentioned above, sleeves and necklines are a great topic. I know what I like but layering them is a challenge. I keep it simple when layering.

  7. Love this thread, different ways of styling basics. It’s helpful for everyday and also for traveling.

  8. You look simply fabulous – I am a Steinmart associate and remember that jacket but didn’t even think of buying it, ….wish I had, you made the ensemble fantastic! That event sounded wonderful and the setup looked lovely…

  9. Susan, Thank you for showing us how to go from one mood to another! My question has to do with the types of fabrics and how to mix them. I hesitate to purchase crepe pants because I’m not sure what the rules are for mixing with denim, twill, other softer fabrics, and textures. Thanks for all of your informative posts!

    1. One of the looks I’ll be showing you later includes these pieces with a denim jacket. The contrast of texture can make all the difference when trying to get similar colors to work together.

  10. Your outfits are so inspiring! I love your style and how you take the pieces and put them together with everything.

  11. I enjoy your edgy looks and miss them, …you used to do a little more. They give me ideas on how to spice up my look now and then, too.

  12. Not according to New York fashionistas. If they blend with your skin tone, flesh toned shoes are always correct.

  13. Hi Susan,
This is for Pat why are the shoes the wronge color? I think the shoes being neither makes the rest of Susan outfit pop. Keep the focus on the different textures of Navy in her outfit. I no expert that why I follow Susan blog for her tips and guide on dressing better not frumpy in my fifty. If Susan wear something that is don’t like, I just say to myself not for me. I take what I like and incorporate it into my wardrobe and and leave the rest.
Susan the outfits looks great on you including the nude shoe color.

  14. Love this combo. Edgy and dressy is a tricky one, but this looks just right. I think the shoes are just right too, I can picture how a navy shoe would make your legs look cut off, just as you have always told us.

  15. Hi Susan, I purchased your navy sleeveless dress a few weeks ago. I just got back from a Viking river cruise to Holland and a few days in Paris – I wore the dress many times with one of my scarves – the dress was a BIG hit – so comfortable and so stylish – I love it!

  16. You look great! I love navy and didn’t realize that you could combine the slight difference in shades on the jacket and pants. Maybe the pants are black? Anyway, you always carry everything off so well. I love the pants. I bought several pairs in black, navy, tan, and rust from Chicos last year (or the year before??) at rock bottom prices. I thought I could always wear them around the house. You do not see those prices today, but maybe it is too early for those sales. I am so glad I can still wear the style. It all looks so good on you. Love your hair too!!
