A Spa Day

I routinely wake up at about three in the morning. This happens even when we go away for the weekend, so I always take something to read in the wee hours while everyone else is sleeping. Early morning is the perfect time to do yoga, Pilates, or some gentle stretches and meditate. When I have the luxury of this quiet time to allow my mind to wander, I get my best ideas.

(A note about staying in an all-inclusive resort or a Bed and Breakfast: Get dressed before going into public spaces. I may be old fashioned, but I would never appear in the breakfast room in stained skimpy gym clothes or PJs and slippers.)

My look during breakfast took no time to put together. It included a pair of dark wash jeans by Michael Kors with a white tank top and Calvin Klein jacket. All these items are from Stein Mart. I wore black and white flats by Circa Joan & David via Saks Off 5th. The silk scarf was hand-painted by Joanna A lot. I bought this one at the Grove Park Inn, Gallery of the Mountains in Asheville. It is a long rectangle scarf, so I wrapped it twice around my neck loosely, tied the ends to include the scarf, and moved the tie to the side.

On day two of our recent weekend getaway at Westglow Resort and Spa, we spent the whole day in the Spa. We enjoyed getting massages, having lunch, including a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne on the terrace looking out over the endless mountains, and then getting facials. It was a delightful and restful day. We sat in the relaxation room and read or took a nap between services.

We finished our last service just in time to get dressed for dinner. Cameras and phones are not allowed in the Spa, so I have no photos of the day to share with you. You can read more about all that the resort has to offer here. I had the best facial of my life with Christa. I can’t wait to go back for another appointment with her. She used Dr. Hauschka products.

Dressed

After a perfect relaxing day in the Spa, it was soon time to get ready for our dinner reservations. I wore a basic tank in black and straight-leg black crepe pants.

The jacket is by IC Collection from ShopMyFairLady.com. I wore simple black pumps from Saks, which are old. I carried a clutch from Saks Off 5th.

Our weekend package included, among other things, dinner in several courses. I would typically only order one entree. I never feel compelled to finish everything on the plate. I eat slowly and savor the experience, but I never eat until I am stuffed.

My Salad at Dinner

This is a mixed baby greens dinner salad.
Mr. Mickey's Prawn

Mr. Mickey enjoyed having a prawn as a first course.
Salmon Again!
We couldn’t resist having the salmon with lobster potato salad again. It is one of our all-time favorite meals.
Mr. Mickey's First Cappuccino

Mr. Mickey tried a Cappuccino for the first time.
A Dessert to Share

The dessert was fabulous!

Dressed For Dinner

There was a wedding in the mansion’s living room this evening, so we were limited as to where we could shoot photos. The light from all the sconces and chandeliers cast an amber glow.

The End of A Perfect Day

I hope you have enjoyed seeing pictures of our wonderful weekend getaway for my 60th birthday. Tomorrow, I will share our Sunday afternoon adventures at a vineyard with you!

  1. First of all, Happy Birthday!!! I LOVE your new site! I started following your other blog about three months ago. I am approaching my 50th birthday and I wanted some ideas to “keep my spirits up”. I subscribed to three different blogs at the time by women over 50 regarding fashion. Yours is by far my favorite. I will still continue to follow your blog since your fashion/health/entertainment ideas most certainly will work for me no matter what. You mentioned some negative responses that you had received regarding what you post. I definitely do not find your comments anything but helpful and informative and they are always delivered in a way that does not seem as if you feel you know any better than anyone else. You keep doing what you’re doing! Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into this.
    XXXOOO

  2. I totally agree with you about appearing for breakfast at the hotel while still wearing PJs and slippers. I’ve seen that so many time and believe it just looks tacky even when the facility is very casual or it is just a continental breakfast where you serve yourself. Heck, I’m even dressed when eating breakfast at home. Again, your outfits all look very classic and interchangeable.

  3. Happy birthday Susan! Your glow is testament not only to the facial, but also to the relaxing time spent in such a rejuvenating place with your favorite person! Lovely new blog!

  4. Love your new website & enjoy all your posts. Thanks for making it easier to dress myself and get the look I want! You always look wonderful!

  5. Susan,
You look WONDERFUL and I love the look of the new website. I like the larger print, Ha….and you probably know why. The resort looks lovely and I’m sure you enjoyed every minute. I don’t know how you can get up at 3 AM ?! Thanks again for all your hints and tips.

  6. You look lovely. I totally agree with the pjs at breakfast. We have seen it so many times in hotels and it’s one of my pet peeves…..just plain lazy!!

  7. Some lovely looks you’ve put together, Susan. Your birthday break sounds so relaxing and enjoyable. And the food and the Veuve … all just perfect! But I was shocked to read the bit about wearing PJs in public at mealtimes. This cannot be so, surely?! Does that really happen?

  8. I was hoping you had a wonderful time but I know you did. That resort looks amazing. When I was in grade 6 at school and we were learning about the States we all had to choose a state to do our project and presentation on, I don’t know why but I chose Tennessee. I think I like how it sounded. After seeing all your beautiful pictures I have put it on my bucket list. I also like all the food pics. Thanks for sharing.
