A Day In The Country

Having grown up on a farm in western North Carolina, my soul is still soothed by being in nature. A part of me always enjoys the stillness and the beauty of rural settings occasionally. A couple of times every year, we make our way down to “The River,” a significant farming area where there are fruit and vegetable stands and the Amish Store, where I stock up on dried beans and grains.

Later in the day, we also visited the Smith Farms & Produce along the Nolichucky River, where we shot them.

My look for the day included white jeans and a chambray shirt, both old from Chico’s. The gray sneakers are from J.Jill.

  1. I’ve actually replicated this outfit many times in the past and find it so classic and fresh looking. I’m 63 and I’ve had younger girls compliment me on my gray Converse All-star “chuck” tennis shoes. Plus, for me, they are sooo comfortable. Looks like you had a fun day.

  2. Don’t you love this time of year? The colors, the smells of fall are so inviting. I live in an area of New York that sounds similar to where you are from. We, too, have an Amish store and numerous farmer’s markets that we love to visit. And the trees in our Upstate region are brilliant in autumn- a wonderful time to visit.

I, too, love the gray sneakers, Susan. You reminded me that somewhere in my closet, I have a pair of gray tweed Van’s. Love your new website!

  3. Love this casual look for such an outing.

For some reason I am unable to access the comments to your blog so cannot see if I am saying anything different!

  4. Hi, Susan, I love “casual days” as I dress for work in my boutique each day. Chambray is a perfect choice for casual trips no matter where you live. Chico’s is our top selling brand in our consignment section at Julie’s Walk-In Closet in Brandon Florida. I love th way their pants fit & the fabrics are great for Florida.

  5. Good to see you wearing comfortable shoes and still looking stylish. I just can’t seem to wear the heels anymore.

  6. My favorite time of year! Thanks for the gorgeous photos…..I am excited to take a country drive to load up on pumpkins, gourds, dried corn and mums (that the deer will eat).

  7. You certainly look happy to be back in the country side, with your nice chambers and white ensemble.
I love the way the corn husks have been tied along the front of the fruit stalls. Nice touch, Mr Fruit Seller!

  8. Susan,
I’m wondering if you would be willing to address medications? I take an antidepressant and hormones(estrogen patch and prometrium pill) and it definitely eases this time of transition. A nice perk of the anti-depressant is I sleep much better and your 3:00 a.m. wake up call will cease. I planned on just going through menopause naturally but I feel so much better taking the anti-depressant and hormones. Just wondering how you and others handle this and thinking a discussion would be helpful to so many of us.
As you know, we don’t feel beautiful on the outside if we are unbalanced inside.
Thank you for sharing with us.

    1. Hi Pam. I do not take any medications. When I started eating clean five years ago, all of the issues that required medication went away. Try some of the natural hormone therapies to help ease this time. My change happened many years ago.
